The following article is quite fascinating. Enjoy.

Glory for Spain Or Nigeria? Alozie Decides This Month

Vanguard (Lagos)

May 8, 2001
Posted to the web May 8, 2001

Glory Alozie, Olympic silver medallist in the womens 100 metres hurdles last year, will decide whether to race for Nigeria or Spain in two weeks time, a top official said here Monday.

"I have spoken to her (Alozie) on the phone and she has given me

her word that she will take a final decision on whether to compete for Nigeria or Spain in two weeks time," the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Adeyemi Wilson, said.

"It's important we know her final decision because we wish to include her on the team for the World Athletics Championships in Canada. We're positive she will remain a Nigerian," he added.

Top Nigerian track star Falilat Ogunkoya had said officials could talk Alozie out of taking Spanish citizenship because she is yet to make a final decision.

"The fact that Alozie has not formally sent her papers to the sports ministry means she has not made up her mind about racing for Spain," Ogunkoya, Nigeria's top 400m star, told a newspaper here.

"I believe it has now dawned on her that Nigeria will hold on to her, which means she will not be eligible to compete in any major competition until Athens 2004."

Ogunkoya said Alozie "is Nigeria's brightest hope of winning a medal at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, in August".

Alozie, 23, had pulled out of Nigeria's team to the World Indoors in Lisbon, Portugal, as part of her plan to race for Spain, where she has been based since 1997.

She cited neglect by Nigeria's sports officials for her decision to represent her adopted country.

Alozie had complained about the handling of the death of her fiancee, Hyginus Anugo, who was killed in Australia in a road accident days ahead of the opening of the Sydney games.

The Nigerian officials in Sydney were criticised for being unsympathetic to the Anugo family and making disrespectful comments about her fiancee and fellow athelete.

She should compete for Spain. All Nigeria have ever given to her is upset stomach. If Akeem Olajuwon can compete for USA, why shouldn't Gloria Compete for a Country that gave her refuge and stood by her during her time of agony. If The Country Nigeria exists we will not be debating this issue. This is the beginning more and more other atheletes are going to face this predicament. Had it been that Biafra is actualized now I doubt if this question would have arised.

I don't think Nigeria deserves Gloria Alozie. Let the Hausas go and compete.

Nigeria brought her to limelight and I think she should compete in Nigeria uniform. HOlajuwon was rebuked by many Nigerians when the latter decided to wear the red, white, and stripes flag in place of the green white green in the Olympics. The ghost of that is still hunting him. However one cannot but take cognizance of the concern of Alozie about the lack of necessary training equipment’s and incentives.

If she decide to compete in Spain uniform, she will become one of many, but if she compete in Nigeria uniform, she will stand out from the crowd. DMutombo is a proud African son who refuse to sell his identity , but chose to use his achievements to make a diference back in his country. He is building an hospital complex worth about hundred million dollar. That is my man.

She should compete against athletes from foreign countrie as long as she sees it as work, and not as an act of patriotism. She owes Nigeria nothing. But if she has to choose between Nigeria and any other country, she should choose that foreign country. I am sure that if the competition had been against athletes from Yorubaland or Hausaland, they would have found ways to rig the results against her.

Based on the story, why shouldn't Alozie compete for Spain? What has Nigeria done for her regarding her athletic prowess?

If Gloria has any king of sense, she should represent Spain. I mean, history doesn't lie. Look at those guys that have stood behind Nigeria, it's either they are dead or as poor as a citizen from Bangladesh. And I wish her luck. But personally, I'll go for Spain.

+++Biafran efforts shall be vindicated by the minds of tomorrow.

Alozie would be better off competing for Spain because Nigeria as obviously indicated does not want her for the fact that her performances were ignored in the past.

Alozie should compete for Spain and when she retires she can go and become a UN ambassador for sports in Africa ala John Fashanu. And if she has enough savings she can go and build edifices in Biafra ala Dmutombo(whoever he/she is) to keep the bababoyzes of this world happy.

Going to Surulere can hardly be described as a good career move for any sensible human being. If the place is so nice why was abacha stashing up forex in his bedroom and why is aremu always escaping to come and have fun abroad.

Sister Alozie should not loose sleep over this decision. She should compete for Spain.

Wonders would never change. Ednut you sure have lots of guts in you. I wonder if lady Biafra is listening. You'r a heart breaker, aren't you?

By the way Alozie is a very beautiful and intelligent Biafran, mersmirizing smiles with great legs and of course nice thighs to die for, compounded with a coca cola butt not bad for a sprinter. They sure do bred them well in Biafra, Mallams will convert to christianity for her. Chest is not that bad.....not a home run though or voluptuous, 36 cup size, a mouthful to be exact but lots of snail nipps bound to turn many heads if hardened. Mmmmmmmmm, I'm sure with such lustful lips she is a great kisser. Too bad Ednut, she is still mourning her dearest dead..Her hubby.

You know the Baifran tradition requires you to mourn for several months or years before replacing the missing link. Ednut, you may want to visit your cold shower since your a hottie for her. Or let your fingers do the talking. Best you ask Lady Biafra for a more tangible advise..You sure do need it.

Hail Biafra

Umuibe,
Just got to this thread!

Gloria should certainly compete for Spain on behalf of Biafra. She will use her skills for Biafra once Biafra is actualized. For now, its befitting to lend her athletic skills to Spain who habored and succored her since her sojourn from hailish nigeria.

Right now in another Biafra discussion group, one Biafran Mazi brought her name up as a possible Biafra Ambassador to Spain. So far, everyone has agreed that she's the right personnel for the job.

Ednut:
Dream on! When will you start using the right head, productively?
Our prospective Biafran Ambassador has to have dignity and class. Quit demeaning her.

Waypoint1,

Do you smell what I smell? Can you say jealous. Amanda, don't worry I am better than 6'3'' tall with a size 14 shoes, I am sure I have enough of me for two Igbo/Biafran ladies, it is afterall customary.

Ednut,
You're all talk and no action. You sure are leaving out the better part of your attributes.
As for having 2 Ndigbo Biafra ladies, hmm... when the going gets going, the word, "menage a trois" will strike quaky fears in your head. Careful what you wish....
