People, It is a sad day for Biafrans within the stranglehold of Nigeria asking for their freedom. Aremu and his wanton and relentless killings of MASSOB masses in his desperate move to forestall his Nigerian sinking ship has peaked in earnest!
Here's the report from Chief Uwazuruike of MASSOB. ---------------------------------------------
Eleven of our members were killed at Obigbo (Rivers State) on the May 22 2001.
Immediately I arrived at Owerri, I was notified that the mobile had just finished killing six of our members who came from Onitsha to pay solidarity to our members at Okigwe.
News further came that the mobile police have started “stop and search” on vehicles entering Okigwe, ostensibly looking for me. For the past few days, they had conducted house to house search of my members and arrested many who are now languishing in jail. They also seized the cars of same of my members who were not found at home when the mobile police came.
Meanwhile, I have issued a statement asking my members to be calm but things are not well at all. I am worried as the rate of casualty in our organization is by far greater than what is recorded in the Israel - Palestine conflict.
Please put this killing of our members in the Internet and see that our people in the US are aware of this new development. Let every person and organization in the US know. Tell them that the Nigerian Govt. has started eliminating our people in broad day light without any provocation.

This is another indictment against Obasanjo as a war criminal whose indictment and trial will commence at the hague in the nearest future...whether dead or alife.
I see the Awusa/Fulani/Yoruba policy of extermination of Ndigbo and perpetual suppression of surviving ones. Here's what Ohafia wrote... ---------------------------------------------
"Two remarkable examples may be given about how the rank and file of the Nigerian Army feel about their mission in Biafra - a feeling which the Nigerian Authorities have expressly and implicitly fostered. Soon after the launching of the war of aggression by Nigeria on 6th July, 1967, and ever since, the Nigerian radio based in Lagos has consistently broadcast before and after its main news programme a war song in Hausa which bears the following interpretation "Let us go and crush them. We will pillage their property, ravish their womenfolk, murder their menfolk and complete the pogrom of 1966". The Nigerian Army acts faithfully in the spirit of this war song. A scrap book belonging to one GANIYU SODEINDE, NA. 38611, Nigerian Army Weapon Training Depot, captured from the enemy at Bori contains the following account of what his Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Onifade, who was also killed in the front, very often repeated to his men about the official Nigerian attitude towards Biafrans: "He (referring to Lt.-Col. Onifade) expressed doubts at the possibility of Nigeria subjugating Biafra in the present war. Even if this were possible, he said, there was the danger that another generation of Biafrans could spring up. He said that Germany had once faced the same period of trial in her history which Biafra is facing at the moment; but today, the Germans are leading the world in technological skill. Similarly, he predicted a glorious future for Biafra if allowed to exist. But inherent in such a situation, he felt was the obvious THREAT to Nigeria both now and ever. He stated that what all sons and daughters of Nigeria should do to prevent such a situation from developing was not only to subjugate Biafra but at the same time to ensure that a new generation of Biafrans does not rise up to perpetuate their race. He commanded us to kill every Biafran we meet." ---------------------------------------------
I lifted the quote above from the wonderful post Bro Ohafia made at Nigeriaworld on the ongoing Awolowo thread over there.
Any Igbo who's dreaming of the betterment of their lot in Nigeria, including "southern solidarity" with Yoruba, better read the above, stare reality in the eye and fall in line behind MASSOB. For MASSOB shall set us all free. She is the only WAY.
May the soul of our slain MASSOB brethrens rest in perfect peace. May the memory of their valiance in making the ultimate sacrifice in quest for our freedom be forever etched in our consciosness, amen!

Sister Amanda, Please post this event for discussion on Nigeriaworld. At least let's hear what they would say there. the Abia State government has some explanation to make on this. Something has got to be done to stop this,while someone needs to answer for it. Meanwhile I suggest this news be spread in the diaspora including the white house.

Bro Emela, thanks. I just did as you suggested. Also, I learnt that various Ndigbo organizations under WIC umbrella are preparing their petition to the UN Human rights commission about the sporty killings of our MASSOB siblings by the Nigerian govt agents. I trust that the UN will look into it and that these atrocities will NOTgo unpunished.

My people, I suggest (1) we take out a page in NY Times and/or other high profile national newspapers here alerting to the world, and condemning the wanton slaughter of indigenous Ndigbo Biafrans by the Nigerian govt. (2) Send a petition letter to the UN Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHRC) to investigate this ongoing systematic genocide of MASSOB grassroots by Nigerian govt.

I support the motion and I suggest Amanda should draft the petition letter.

I also second the motion on a petition to UN and other humand rights organization. I will also suggest we take this even futher, for those of us in the US, we need to seek our representative's opinion and their stands on the plight of Ndi-Igbo survival amongst these barbarians around us. People, we need to start making friends, ASAP. The question has been asked in the past "Who are your friends" Well, unfornately, that is the honest truth question. We need to know where we stand amongst the "powers" Who our friends are and how far they are willing to travel with us? That murderous criminal spends a lot of time criss crossing the Globe telling lies to shore up surpport for his evil intents and deeds in the name of security. I strongly believe these killings of our people are known, but for the sake of protecting "National Interest" ignorance is claimed. The pipelines must stay open regardless of human cost! Its time we ask what those national interests are. The petition is a start but we also have constituency reps here in the US that can help. Representatives of our various constutuency can help ignite some heat. With the right questions asked and some outrage, it would be awhile before that criminal makes another trip to see my Commander in Chief.

I agree with Ochiagha on writing to our respective representatives in our localities informing them of the atrocities committed against mankind. I believe it would send a kind of signal to the Bush administration and Nigeria in particular.

This is a copy of the email I sent to Amnesty in the UK. I shall be petitioning a few politicians. This is a good time as they are all preparing for the Election in a few days time. Those who are near Boston should go and throw eggs at Orji Kalu when he comes so that he will go back and call his boys to order. I'm also pasting links to amnesty in your respective areas. Let us raise the decibels(noise level). The clouds have gathered and it is time to rise and be counted. WE ARE BIAFRANS AND PROUD OF IT!!

Sent: 29 May 2001 09:31 To: 'information@amnesty.org.uk' Subject: KILLINGS AND DETENTION IN EASTERN NIGERIA - URGENT ACTION REQUIRED! Importance: High
Being very mindful of the stand your highly reputable organisation against human rights abuses, I am compelled to bring to your notice at this time the unlawful killings and detention of members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB).
MASSOB is a non violent organisation led by an Attorney, Ralph Uwazurike, which was founded to champion the right of the peoples of Eastern Nigeria to self determination. MASSOB has used rallies and peaceful protests to press home its points and there is no evidence that the group has any violent bent whatsoever. In fact it was in recognition of the non-violent nature of this pressure group that the leadership where granted USA visa and permitted to conduct fund-raising activities in America a few weeks back.
The Nigerian Authorities have decided to use the occasion of the one year anniversary celebration of MASSOB to unleash terror on members of the group. We received the following messages from Ralph Uwazurike who is still in hiding:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The anniversary is a very huge success. Radio Nigeria also reported it to be a huge success as most shops, popular markets like the Ariria Aba and the Onitsha main market remained closed. Against the instructions by government agents that people should go about their businesses, everybody stayed at home and observed the anniversary. However, my Eastern co-ordinator (Prince) was shot by the mobile police while he was on his way to my hotel to escort me to the rally ground. The mobile police men who were annoyed that all shops and markets were closed in Aba trailed their bus and shot Prince and the driver of the bus on their way. Both of them are still receiving treatment at the hospital. At Okigwe, about 250 mobile policemen stormed my hide-out on the early morning of 22-05-01. As they could not find me, they arrested my P.A. (Dr. Marvin Iheonu) and took him to Owerri. As at the time the police came, I had left Okigwe for Aba. As at today, there are reports in the newspapers that men of the State Security Services (SSS) have started arresting vendors for selling newspapers containing information on biafra. The govt. is jittery that we have captured Rivers State as our anniversary was completely successful at Obigbo (Rivers state)". Ralph Uwazurike 25/05/2001 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eleven of our members were killed at Obigbo (Rivers State) on the May 22 2001. Tell them that the Nigerian Govt. has started eliminating our people in broad day light without any provocation. Ralph Uwazuruike 28/05/2001. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRAYER: It is my earnest prayers that you will use your good influences to bring pressure to bear on the Nigerian government. Nigeria is supposed to operating a democracy but since the inception of the present civilian regime led by General Obasanjo, the people of Nigeria have been subjected to various forms of human rights abuses. Within the first year of this regime the oil producing town of Odi in Eastern Nigeria was razed to the ground by Nigerian soldiers under the instruction of the leadership at Abuja. General Obasanjo in a recent visit to the area bluntly told the people he had no apologies to offer. He had earlier scolded and abused the BBC correspondent Barnaby Philips during a "presidential" press conference for asking question about the Odi massacre as it is called. I pray you in the name of Eastern Nigerians whose rights and freedom have continued to be suppressed, to come over to Nigeria and help us. We do not want another Ogoni and Ken Saro Wiwa. You are our only hope. The governments of the developed world are more interested in the price of the Nigerian crude oil which General Obasanjo is using as bargaining chip to cover the many atrocities of his civilian dictatorship.
Come over to eastern Nigeria and help us!
Best regards,
On my knees, Ohafia Udumeze
VANGUARD: South-East TUESDAY, 29TH MAY, 2001 MASSOB alleges kidnap of adviser By Vincent Ujumadu ABA, ABIA
ADVISER to the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB), Dr. Marvin Iheomu has been declared missing by the organisation six days after he was allegedly kidnapped by some people suspected to be security operatives. Eastern coordinator of MASSOB, Mr. Longinus Orjiakoh said in Umuahia that Iheonu, who was resident in the United States of America (USA) and came home apparently for the celebration of the first anniversary of MASSOB, was forcefully taken away from his Okigwe, Imo State home at about 5.45 a.m on May 22. Orjiakoh however appealed to MASSOB members throughout the country to remain calm in the face of all provocations adding, "we must try our best to maintain the non-violent posture until full independence is achieved." He also advised Nigerian leaders to check the excesses of Police Commissioners, Area Commanders and other security agents saying that "we are witnessing today what Gwarzo did during Abacha era when funds were carelessly drawn from the nation’s treasury based on imagined security reports." According to him, MASSOB never planned to launch military regalia during the anniversary celebration, claiming that it was the imagination of agents who tried to use MASSOB to rip the country off. Various prominent Igbo described MASSOB as a bunch of jobless people, but the leader insisted that "it is not enough to dislodge us or tag us jobless." Rather, he said, "it would be better if we get jobs and shelter." He said further, "we may accept to be hooligans, touts, jobless and nuisance, but we must state that we are doing a job which the Eastern region elite class has failed to do. Therefore, those who speak as if this land belongs only to them must be reminded that we also have the right to exist."
Thanks Amanda. Are you still having a PC-less time? Hope it subsides soonest, I can't imagine life without a PC.
Hope all the people are keeping well. In my email to Amnesty, Rights watch and Rights Internet, I'd used Eastern and East as opposed to Igbo and Ndi-Igbo. I think it makes sense considering those that died in Rivers.
God bless you all and happy anniversary.
Biafra lives!
Biafrans, I've drafted the petition letter to the UNHRC complaining of the wanton killings of the Biafrans of the Eastern region by the Nigerian govt. I've e-mailed a copy to the UNHRC, in NY. I'll still have the letter sent in person to the UNHRC within days.
The letter is a little lenghty, however, its far reaching to the atrocities committed by Obasanjo's govt since his infamous "second selection".
Ordinarily, I would have preferred to send it to all the Biafrans on this board thru private e-mail, but such exercise seem cumbersome. So, I'll post the letter here for a little while, and then delete it. What do you think? Let me know ASAP. Thanks.
Amanda, Pls I will need a raw copy in word format b/c I will be sending an Australian version to the Australian Govt.and also the human rights Groups here.
RE: SYSTEMATIC AND WANTON KILLINGS OF EASTERN REGION BIAFRANS BY THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT.
Sir/Madam,
We, the indigenes of Eastern Region of Nigeria also known as Biafrans at the BiafraNigeria world Forum, seek to bring to your esteemed attention, the systematic and wanton killings of unarmed masses of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States Of Biafra known as MASSOB, by the Nigerian govt. agents (State Security Services and Mobile Police Force).
As you may have already known, MASSOB is non arm-carrying, non-violent, and peaceful movement to actualize the Nation of Biafra. Its leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, founded it in 1999. The members of MASSOB include literates, illiterates, professionals, non-professionals, employed, unemployed, men, women, young, old, and diaspora peoples of Eastern region of Nigeria known as the Biafrans.
Because our cause is just, peaceful, and non-violet, the body of Nations (UN) has rewarded Biafra nation with the Observer status at the United Nations. Biafra also intend to utilize this privilege further by calling on the UN to conduct an independence Referendum election during the first quarter of the year 2002. We commend the United Nations for providing us with these avenues whose ultimate end is self-determination.
Nigerian govt.'s history of repression, genocide, and countless atrocious crimes against the indigenous Biafrans earned them international notoriety and condemnation during the unjust war waged against the Biafrans by the Nigerian govt. during 1967 through 1970. I trust that the files about Biafra at the UN are no strangers to your UNHRC organization.
Currently, Nigeria is a democratic country presided over by President Olusegun Obasanjo of Yoruba tribe. His presidency came to being, after decades of rule by despotic military dictatorship. He is also an erstwhile military dictator (1979 - 1981). Since the onset of President Obasanjo's civilian govt., gross human right abuses of the Biafran indigenes of the eastern region have risen to alarming proportion. The world was appalled when President Obasanjo sent his military personnel to a Biafran village of Odi in Bayelsa State, where they razed the entire impoverished oil-producing village to the ground. Few weeks prior to that, President Obasanjo's soldiers descended on another Biafran village of Choba in Rivers State where they raped, pillaged, and plundered the villagers to obscurity. Again, during the last two months of the year 2000 and the first quarter of 2001, President Obasanjo's Mobile Police squad descended on yet another Biafran town of Okigwe in Imo-State and unleashed blood-curling mayhem on the indigenes. They shot at any thing that moved, including passing motorists. When they were done, that section of Okigwe became a ghost town. Till date, President Obasanjo has not investigated nor held his military personnel accountable for these horrible and gut-wrenching human rights abuses.
On May 22, 2001, MASSOB celebrated the anniversary of her birth. On that faithful day, the Mobile Police squad of Nigeria, without provocation, opened fire on the unarmed MASSOB civilians and slaughtered eleven of them on the spot. Encouraged by the result of this onslaught, the Mobile Police AKA "kill and go" mob, sought and abducted the personal adviser to the MASSOB leader, Dr Marvin Iheonu. Till date, Dr Iheonu's conditions and whereabouts are still unknown. Next, the "kill and go" mobile police sighted and opened fire on the MASSOB coordinator for Eastern Region, known as "Prince". He's severely wounded but luckily alive. Numerous other MASSOB members and suspected members are being hunted and gunned down daily by the Nigerian govt. agents without any provocation. Currently, they are conducting house to house, vehicle to vehicle search in the Eastern Region of Biafra, hunting for MASSOB members and their leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, for slaughter. Suspects are shot at a point blank range, at sight. Such is the current lot of Biafrans who are simply asking for self-determination after decades of repression, degradation, and merciless slaughter by the Nigerian govt.
Here are some of the mournful letters and articles from the MASSOB leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, and few Nigerian newspapers who braved, the wrath and intimidation of Nigeria govt. to put some of these atrocities into print. ---------------------------------------------
The anniversary is a huge success. Radio Nigeria also reported it to be a huge success as most shops, popular markets like the Ariaria Aba and the Onitsha main market remained closed. Phone every person and organization you know in the US and tell them that I asked you to do so on my behalf. Tell them that the Nigerian Govt. has started eliminating our people in broad day light without any provocation.
3 Feared Dead in MASSOB, Police Clash
Rivers Three persons were feared dead on Tuesday in a clash between the Rivers State Police command and activists of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State off Biafra (MASSOB) at Obigbo, near Port Harcourt.
Eye-witnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that trouble broke out when the MASSOB group wanted to hoist its flag at Obigbo, a border town some 17 km east of Port Harcourt.
They said the police opened fire when the group hoisted "the Biafran flag,'' resulting in casualties among the Massob members, who have been widely reported to be making plans to launch the Biafran currency on May 30.
The public relations officer of the Rivers police command, Dr. Uche Chukwuma, confirmed the clash but gave no details on the casualty figure, saying only that two policemen were injured.
He said that he was yet to receive detailed briefing from the police commander who led the operation, assuring that the public would be duly informed when the picture became clearer.
It was learnt that the police cordoned off the area, while many residents of the town reportedly fled.
The activities of the MASSOB group appear to have been giving the federal government sleepless nights, although the group has been known to be preaching non-violence in its pursuits.
Biafra was the name adopted by the Igbo people when they embarked on a seccession bid in 1967, a project that resulted to the deaths of two million people, with thousands of houses owned by the Igbo seized in the neighbouring Rivers state.
The present Rivers state was part of the defunct Owerri province until 1946, when that arrangement was altered by the then British colonial administration. ---------------------------------------------
The Nigerian govt. feel re-assured that they have gotten away scot-free with their genocidal atrocities in Choba, Rivers State, Odi in Bayelsa State, and Okigwe in Imo-State. Encouraged by the silence of the world, they have stepped up their killing spree of the Biafrans in blatant violation of their human rights. Nigeria believes that no international organization would investigate nor punish it for these willful unprovoked slaughters of Biafrans.
It is our inalienable right to freely and publicly gather and associate in a non-violent and peaceful manner in our enclave and other regions of Nigeria, as provided by the UN charter on human rights. This exercise of our human rights is earning us systematic and brutal extermination by the Nigerian govt.
We the MASSOB grassroots in Diaspora, therefore implore you to utilize your humanitarian and justice oriented offices of UNHRC, to come to our aid. Perhaps, numerous Biafran lives will be saved and preserved should you urgently give top priority attention to this humble request of ours, the oppressed Biafrans. By promptly investigating, condemning, and punishing these atrocious slaughter of Biafrans by the Nigerian govt., you would have providing a strong message to Nigerian govt. that the world is watching and ready to exact deterrent measures against any human rights abuse of the indigenous peoples of Biafra.
On behalf of our voiceless and oppressed MASSOB siblings at home, in Biafra Region,
