Now who said Nigeria is not making progress? The latest aviation breakthrough by these courageous women should be applauded and be taken seriously. No color-lines, in this case. Let's praise them and encourage the future generations of Nigerian women to do same. In this regard, the best is yet to come. If women can save Nigeria, the better. Let us join in the crusade.

Two new female pilots enter land in Abuja

From Segun Ayeoyenikan, Abuja

IN a rare display of expertise, two Nigerian ladies from the College of Aviation, Zaria, Kaduna State, on solo flight training yesterday afternoon (2.15p.m) successfully landed at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

Amidst fanfare, the two ladies, Tolu Shoyemi (24) and Jennifer Yeats (22), at 30 minutes intervals arrived at the International Wing of the Abuja Airport into the warm embrace of two ministers ñ Kema Chikwe (Aviation) and the Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development Hajiya Aisha Ismail.

However, there was mild delay in the over 250 kilometres distance between Zaria and Abuja which worried the aviation minister who was full of expectations.

On landing following enquiry from the minister over the delay, Jennifer told Chikwe that it was a problem of "bad weather".

Full of lives, Tolu Shoyemi flew in the aircraft marked Tampico 5N CBA while Yeats landed with 5N, CAN.

Briefing journalists, the Aviation Minister commended the duo for doing the nation proud, saying it was a wide gap between the new pilots and the other known Nigerian female pilot currently aged 40 years.

Women Affairs Minister, however, urged the two new pilots to encourage other ladies to choose career in the aviation field.

The last time the college conducted flight training was in 1992.

An apparently elated director and chief executive officer of NCAT, Engineer Angus I. Ozoka, told reporters that he was full of joy.

According to him, 18 other trainee pilots are expected to complete their various courses by mid next year.

Meanwhile, the expected early turn-out next year of 20 pilots from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) may not be realised due to the scarcity of aviation fuel. Disclosing this to reporters in Abuja, the College Rector, Engineer A.I Ozoka, said that the Ministry of Aviation has been officially informed about the scarcity.

Ozoka added that "the college currently has eight instructors to 35 student pilots, saying "this is against International Civil Organisation (ICAO) regulations which stipulated three students to one instructor.

What exactly do you want to achieve from starting this thread? If you don't know, this kind of promotion and propanganda is uncalled for in this forum.

Shaga,

I'm amazed that Kemas Chikwe agrees with this bunch that a flight training was a "rare display" of expertise when the Biafran lady called Chinyere Oyemuchara had flown a commercial craft about twenty years ago.

Does this suggest that Nigeria is twenty years behind Biafra? Methinks the gap is a lot wider than that. Afterall, naija has just been placed at about 50years behind Malaysia who are about the same level as Biafra.

Well for start, it is a big deal because such skills are not noted among the Yorubas or where ever the other girl come from.

Tech is a common skill among Biafrans. We are the gifted lots in that department. Now you know why it is a big deal. It is like an Hausa fixing a Biafran automobile. It gotta make the evening news.

It was last month that one student in Borno had an ACT score higher than the rest of the states. But the enrollment of students in the north was no closer than that of Imo state. It was a big deal. The headline read "A student from the North scored highest among all the states". It is not a big deal when a Biafran scores higher than any body such is norm. Some Nigerians have to catch up somehow.

Hail Biafra

Hahaha Whatever.
WaypointBiafra is right. Why should this be a big deal if Nigerians are civilised and sophisticated. Nigeria is so behind Biafra, cheii. We are mmmmmmm better than u owambe people called Nigerians. A female Nigerian flew an air plane big deal. Our women are far more sophisticated and educated than u people. Congrats to u primitive Nigerians but u still have 20 years gap to cover up.

Ohafia and teddy:
There is nothing spectacular about what you read regarding the Nigeria female pilots. One must admit in this instance that a flawed news reporting is in place to which the free press must still be respected as in all democracies. It is no big deal, and the deal is, what exactly do you know other than what you get from the tabloids?

Goodness gracious, Bature, how wrong can you be!

It wasn't spectacular in your reasoning that two federal ministers spent a day worth a lot of man-hours in a hoax.

And it wasn't spectacular either that some people connived to deceive the world on their proficiency and competence in such a field as piloting an aircraft.

What are you talking about? These people like Salisu Buhari and Tinubu set out to deceive. In my humble opinion(and I should know), the case of the these fake "pilots" is a lot more severe owing to the increased hazard for the unsuspecting public possibly boarding aircrafts flown by these "cow-girls"

The press only reported the events as they occured and so should be absolved from any blame whatsoever.

Bature,
You were born into fraud, grew in a fraudulent country, received fraudulent education, and got to where you are thru fraud. How can you possibly see or comprehend the fraudulent nature of the hoaxy Yoruba "bottom power" female "pilots"? For you ignorant parasites, it's " uphold any falsehood at any cost, for continued one nigeria." Acquire some shame, man.

Fact still remains that neither your people nor the purported "female pilots" can ever measure up or even catch up to excellency of the Igbo/Biafran women during the war...thirty five years ago. Not now, and not ever. Get it?

Bature,

I am shocked to read your comments. Do you mean to say that in your "democracy", that freedom of the press is optional?. Who's to say that the "free press" was not cajoled and bullied into printing what they new to be false. What else have they been feeding the public that is manufactured and manipulated by the authorities?.

Shouldn't this be a wake-up call to those chasing after an elusive democracy?

Folks,

You need not be surprised at the unfolding saga neither should the Bature retort shock anyone. That's their Nigeria and Bature epitomizes the leadership. That's child's play, guys and you all know it.

What do you make of the nation's security chief having over 200 minting machines in his house and yet they would take up air time to tell us that tha Nigerian economy was beyond comprehension? How wouldn't it be when all the Alhajis compete with the official Minting Agency in churning out the tissue paper?

And to make an issue out of 2 girls lifting and landing a training aircraft! Its an insult. Its not new in that country or is the import solely that they have been able to do what Biafrans have been doing all along? I hope none of my friends gets to read all this junk.

Bature,
Has all these realities that we freely churned out sank in? Stay away from parroting the "D" word since you can never comprehend it's principles or applications. You are the epitome of the Nigerian govt and its people's elusive chase of the ghost of Biafra and the shadow of Biafra's glory.
You gotta start paying for these counsellings.

Kema says she only said the girls "landed" the aircraft. BiafraNigerians are a wonderful breed. Meanwhile, she's awaiting security report on the issue. Yet she thinks a fired Rector is involved. Who said Sherlock Holmes can not do more than matching handles to real names?

Another month, another panel. I'm surprised they haven't set up a panel to verify whether Aremu and Anyim are actually OVERWEIGHT as we've been reporting.

Please, my American colleagues will not take too kindly to my laughter this day of mourning. If you put Mr. Idiot at the head of that panel he would come up with the conclusion that Aremu is actually a "slim fit Maggi" under that agbada .

Look at Colin Powell after nearly ten years of retirement, he can still fit into a combat uniform. Aremu as a general looked 9 months pregnant and now he virtually drags his pot along with him. As for fat boy Anyim, I guess he feels he is in good company because when you add the pot bellied Atiku then you have a government of Sumo wrestlers .

Guys,

What this girl has done is 'no walk in the Park'. Experienced Pilots have died with all onboard in the past.

I think this girl should be flying the generals with the current ‘no maintenance’ culture in place.
Some stupid engineer probably left a spanner in the engine for all I know.

Kudos! Girl!

Trainer Aircraft Crash-lands, No Casualty
Tragedy again struck the aviation sector yesterday, as a trainer aircraft belonging to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, crash-landed at the UAC maize farm, Kafin Manderu, about seven kilometers off the Kaduna-Kano expressway, Northern Kaduna.
The American-made aircraft, TB9, which is used mainly for training purposes at the College, was on routine training exercise, when the incident occurred at about 10.15a.m., about eight minutes after take-off.
Although the four passengers on board the plane escaped unhurt, the aircraft suffered severe damages, as the nose, propellers and wings were completely destroyed.
On board the aircraft were Captain (Mrs) Chinyere Kalu (first female pilot of the College), who is currently an instructor at the school, twin sisters, simply identified as Asena and Osena, and another male student named simply as Akanni.
One of the twins who explained how the incident occurred, praised efforts of the instructor, Captain Kalu, who she simply described as “air godess.”
She commended Kalu’s experience, candor and composure, as the main reason why the accident was greatly mitigated.
“Shortly after we took off, we began to hear the engine parameters blinking, everything suddenly stopped working. There was nothing she (Kalu) did not do, yet there was no improvement. Then suddenly, there was something she touched and the plane began to descend gradually.
“All these while, she was telling us to be calm and ensure we fasten our belts. She kept telling us that she was in control of the aircraft and that nothing was going to happen.
“As we were descending, there was this rock in front of us. We thought we were going to hit it, but somehow, she managed to avoid it and then gradually, we landed on the maize farm.”
