Killer Snake: Kano Village Invites Snake Charmers, Clerics
From Yakubu Musa in Kano
Residents of Rimin Gata village of Ungoggo Local Government Area of Kano State have resorted to inviting snake charmers and Islamic scholars from Niger Republic to help stem the rash of deaths reportedly resulting from mysterious snake bites.
As at press time no fewer than 30 persons have reportedly died of "mysterious" snake bite at the village.
THISDAY checks reve- aled that over 150 others have fallen victims of the snake bite and are receiving treatment from both the state government medical team and local snake charmers.
Residents of the village as well as neigbouring Rijiyar Zaki, Rimin Gata and Dausayi, have started fleeing the area to where they called "safe haven'.
The mysterious snake which the victims said had never been seen before first appeared on Friday July 27, and has been biting an average of 8 person everyday in the four villages.
According to the villagers, the snake could not be seen by its victims as they only felt the pains of the bite.
"Those who saw the snake never survived the bite", said Ado Tanko who is one of the surviving victims.
"All we are asking from our brothers and sisters is prayers from the way we see the situation. It looks as if this snake is not the normal snake we know, " one of the villagers told newsmen in Kano.
Meanwhile, Kano State government has sent its medical team to the village to treat victims of the bite.
The state Commission of Health, Dr. Mansur Kabir, told newsmen yesterday in Kano that "we are yet to ascertain whether the incident is caused by genuine snake bites or any other creature".
"Some of the victims that we have seen, we discovered that they are only suffering from shock and fear but not a snake bite", he said.
