LOVERS of music in Katsina State can now literally roll out the drums in celebration, following a pronouncement on Wednesday by the state's Sharia Commission that drumming and singing are permitted by the Sharia law after all.
Controversy had raged between performing artists and religious groups over the legality or otherwise of singing and drumming under the Sharia law.
Clarifying the issue on Tuesday, the commission directed that singing and drumming were desirable at wedding, Id prayers and circumcision ceremonies, and could also take place during wars or while welcoming a fellow Moslem from a trip.
Addressing journalist in Katsina, chairman of the commission, Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim said the body considered it necessary to wade into the ensuing controversy in order to lay the matter to rest.
According to him, the commission had conducted " a deep research "into Islamic books and came up with the conclusion that the two performances were legal at the occasions listed but explained that the musical instruments should not be used to abuse or slight anybody.
He pointed out that such performances were normally observed to announce to the public that particular social functions involving certain people were taking place.
The controversy had recently degenerated into a physical combat at Dutsin-Ma, between some musicians and members of the Da'awah Islamic group, who have been going round the state, disrupting social activities featuring drummers and singers,
The issue had also resulted in a Sharia court case between the brother of the detained chairman of the state's branch of the Izala Islamic group, Alhaji Sabo Musa Hassan, and the secretary-general of the state's Performing Artists and Artisans Association (PAAA) , Mallam Bature Gagare.

Talk sense, man. If you have no idea of either geography or demography, then go get some education. You probably live in a town where there is a public library that you could enter gratis: yes, gratis, the only way you know how to get anything.
If you people are killing the southern Sudanese on the mistaken assumption that since we share similar attachments to Christianity and animism then we could be related, then you are wrong, as usual. We empathize with them as fellow human beings, no more no less, something you wouldn't understand anyway.
It is not my job to engage in demographic and archeological digs to unearth the origins of your ties to the Southern Sudanese. It is enough for me to show that you both share a Judeo-Christian ethic and tradition that separates you from us and that has failed you both, in Nigeria and in the Sudan. You are living the consequences of that poor tradition. Do not expect me to empathize or sympathize with the inferiority of your choice.
I'll still try to educate you, nonetheless. By this your peculiar logic, we are one and the same with all the caucasian races that have the same Judeo-Christian tradition? You are even worse than I had hitherto believed.
