Seemingly they still mean business. But however, it is the same old song.

YCE, PDP chieftains align for Obasanjo's re-election
From Iyabo Sotunde and Kola Alade, Ibadan
BARELY a week after the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere barred its members and all governors of Alliance for Democracy (AD) from further campaigning for President Olusegun Obasanjo's re-election, another group, the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), at the weekend declared it support for efforts to ensure his return to Aso Rock in 2003.
Already, the YCE has set up a committee to fine-tune strategies that would aid Obasanjo's re-election.
The group's President, Pa Emmanuel Alayande who disclosed this at the first meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Elders Forum (South West Zone) held in Ibadan at the weekend, added that the committee, headed by former Minister of Justice , Chief Richard Akinjide is mandated to work assiduously to smoothen the president's return to power in spite of stiff opposition from the homefront.
The octogenarian whose speech was read by former Information Minister, Chief Kola Balogun, said the YCE would soon embark on campaign from ward to ward to achieve the goal.
"The best thing that can happen to the Yoruba is having President Obasanjo rule again. Though YCE is a non-political association, we have a duty and we are not going to shirk our responsibility. We are going to work assiduously to clinch the presidency for President Obasanjo in 2003 in spite of shift opposition in some quarters," he pledged.
The Afenifere last week in Lagos banned its members, including AD governors, from backing Obasanjo for another term.
Akinjide in his speech at the forum warned the leaders of Afenifere against opposing Obasanjo's re-election.
According to him, "If Afenifere does not support President Obasanjo in 2003 it will become irrelevant in Nigerian politics."
"We are lucky to have Obasanjo as president, imagine what could have happened if otherwise, I would not have performed better than him. We have to beg him to stand for the election again.
Akinjide, who admitted that it is not easy to unseat the incumbent governors, asserted that it is rather possible for intelligent politicians to unseat the "setting governors".
"AD did not win the last elections in the South-West but other parties lost it. That will not happen thus time. We all have a free playing field, we will match their naira with naira and their dollars with dollars. We are not going to rig as they are crying about but we are going to win fairly," he asserted.
Also speaking after the YCE three-hour meeting yesterday in Ibadan, its secretary-general Justice Adewale Thompson warned Yoruba politicians against using provocative statements in their campaign.
The council otherwise known as the "Igbino Agba Yoruba" promised to publish its findings on why the race should support Obasanjo's re-election.
Justice Thompson who spoke with reporters pointed out that the leaders resolved that politicians of the Yoruba nation should restrain themselves in words and actions by avoiding provocative statements as part of the campaign strategy."
His words, "Citizens of Yorubaland, are tired of fighting each other for political offices and would implore all politicians to eschew bitterness and inordinate ambition so that peace and harmony may continue to reign in the nation."
The YCE chief who said that the council would not encourage violence in the South West, reiterated the organisation's commitment to improve the well being of the Yoruba.
Meanwhile PDP elders in the South West have agreed to prevail on Obasanjo contest the 2003 presidential elections.
Consequently, they have called on the party leaders in the cone to put in position without delay to devise organisation techniques that will enhance the party electoral fortunes in the elections ahead.
The elders who converged at Premier Hotel, Ibadan South-West Elders Forum believed that Obasanjo's readiness to stand for a second term in office will help consolidate all his programmes of cementing unity, stability and good governance in Nigeria.
In a nine-point communique read after the meeting attended by five serving ministers and notable PDP stalwarts, the elders condemned the persisting unguarded attacks on Obasanjo by Afenifere and AD leaders and warned all Yoruba to be wary of moves by them to subvert the laudable politics of the Federal Government.
The elders maintained that Nigeria is greater than all the citizens, hence, "we note with delight President Obasanjo's laudable policy of involving all stands of political opinion in his government but the beneficiaries of his gestures should reciprocate such with unalloyed loyalty and devotion".
While calling on all Yoruba to rally round the government of Obasanjo to ensure that no vote is lost in all the forthcoming elections they passed a vote of confidence on all the PDP leaders in the South-West and saluted the National Vice-Chairman (South-West) Olabode George's untiring efforts in promoting peace and unity within the party.
