BiafraNigeria is NOT a Secular State, Says Sharia Advocate, Obusonjo

Obusonjo (right) dressed in Halloween Costume #8 as he fielded questions from Mr. Lustig of BBC (left)and BiafraNigerians from around the world.

Our so-called president told his BBC audience that "BiafraNigeria is Not a Secular State."

What else can we expect from this ugly man? He has finally come full circle. He is counting on his support for Sharia to see him through the next elections. This is why Igbos everywhere must stop him in 2003. Expect the Ojo Maduekwe, Emeka Offor, and Mbadinujus of Igboland to start campaigning for this man's reelection soon. Here is what the ugly man had to say about Sharia,
quote:
Robin Lustig:
A call from Celestine Inwuka, Santiago, Chile: Why do you let Sharia law exist in a secular state?

Obusonjo:
We are not a secular state - we are a multi-religious state. That is what we call ourselves in our constitution.

Robin Lustig:
An e-mail now from Francis Gwandi, Yaounde, Cameroon: What is your own stance on Sharia law and does your administration recognise it?

Obusonjo:
Of course. It is in of the constitution of Nigeria. Sharia law is part of life and so are the Muslims.

Robin Lustig:
On the question of Sharia law, do you see any connection between the extension and the application of Sharia law which has now occurred in many northern states in Nigeria and the increase in violence between Christian and Muslim communities in parts of the country?

Obusonjo:
I would not say no to that. But I will not say yes because I would want to see improvement of statistics.

Robin Lustig:
There is a coincidence of timing.

Obusonjo:There is a coincidence of timing. But if you take a place Kaduna for instance. Kaduna had always been for two or three reasons - one of them religious obviously - has always been a hotbed.

Robin Lustig:
500 killed in just September alone.

Obusonjo:
When you say Sharia is responsible for an increase in violence - maybe, maybe not. But I will want experts to look at what is happening and be able to say that with statistics. Having said that, the issue of Sharia is that for a Muslim the Sharia is for the Muslims as the Ten Commandments is for a Christian.

Robin Lustig:
And you as a Christian do not see a problem with a system of law which specifies the amputation of a hand for theft, the stoning to death of a women for adultery?

Obusonjo:
Not because I am a Christian but out of own humanness and humanity, I will not want to see a man or woman stoned to death. If a women will be killed for this offence or a man killed for his offence, I would want a less painful death than being stoned to death. But that is my choice.

Robin Lustig:
Do you as head of state, reserve the right to ensure that your choice is observed.

Obusonjo:
My choice in a democracy is only my choice. If I am a dictator, of course my choice must be carried. But in a democracy if my choice is not carried then it is not carried.

We have to stop this moron, and do so fast!
[Eek!]

I would think a President of about 140 million people should know the difference between a multi-religion nation, a secular nation and a state sponsored religion.

A multi-religion state means the people of Biafranigeria have more than christianity and moslem and not sponsored by the state.

A secular state means a nation that knows religion but does not give special preferences to a particular religion and plays no part in sponsoring it.

Obasanjo's version of multi religion nation is narrow, talibalistic, detrimental and will not satisfy the test of reasoning in a democratic nation and definitely will not survive the reconstruction of his good intent in a hopeless nation like Biafranigeria.

If Biafranigerians were to be asked tha greatest hidden danger is today in Biafranigeria in the conduct of democracy's affairs. I suppose Biafranigerians [South] would think first of state sponsored religion equals violence + insecurity.
From 1999, the inception of hurried democratic government in Biafranigeria, religious violence has claimed more lives than bank and highway robbers combined. Every person is beginning to feel a hidden agenda to squeez out their religion completely.

Obasanjo is dead wrong. I watched the video clip less than half way because it was very boring.[vintage Obasanjo] Religion is a talibalistic bullets in a democratic state and the worst is yet come. Ref Talibans.

Hail Biafra

If ever there was an excellent justification for legal abortion, Obasanjo personifies it. For the sake of humanity, Obasanjo should be castrated immediately, to prevent him from further procreating.

I'm very pleased you picked up Obasanjo's clear ignorance on a very basic political concept.

Most societies/states are multi-religious, but that does not make them religious states. In other words, a secular state may be multi-religious in its make-up, but that does not mean the state in question professes a state-religion.

Haba! Obasanjo, what kind logic you dey give us so?

We all have to accept the reality we face as black people and as Africans; for far too long the incompetents in our mist have done the jobs they are not suited for and our societies have been hamstrung and incapacitated in dealing with this situation. I believe the reason lies with the severe historical distortions (colonial and post-colonial) in our societies [Frown]

All

Take a close look at the picture above once more, notice Robin Lustig's "red socks". I just wonder whether he was making a statement with classic british-subtlety. Hmmmm [Wink]

All jokes aside, interpretation of the constitution is the (constitutional) responsiblility of the judiciary. I believe it is time the judiciary steps in and remove the general confusion Obasanjo has created in his very poor attempt to distinguish between a religious and secular state.

BiafraNigeria has many constitutional issues to resolve "satisfactorily" and Obasanjo has just unwittingly compounded the problem. [Frown]

It has been said: 'a people get the government they deserve'. There is a lot of substance in that statement and if you disagree, please take another look at "one-Nigeria". [Wink]

Take one look and destroy your sight. Listen once, and destroy your ears. Says he, bout the failure of IBB, Buhari, et al. to appear before Oputa panel, Here is your president's answer:

"I used the opportunity "to to to to to to to lay dead the issue ...." Whatever! No wonder the BBC transcribed that gibberish.

Dr. B:

I was shocked when the president said there were 120,000 police men, and the population of the country was 120,000,000.

Then Obasanjo said “as you can see, that is one police to one million” persons.

I guess Obasanjo graduated from the Mobolaji Aluko school of mathematics and statistics. We are in trouble.

From watching Obusonjo, I could not help feeling that God is punishing BiafraNigeria. Sometimes, one felt like one was watching animal television. I cannot wait to learn what message Mr. Lustig was sending with the red socks.

What is wrong with this man? How does he distinguish between a secular state and a multi-religious state? If Igbos do not see this as the last straw, then we are in big trouble. America calls itself a secular state, even though it has multiple religions.

At the risk of seeming to ask a moron to prove the negative, I would like to see Obusonjo prove that there is a unifying spiritual, ecclesiastical, or non-temporal bond holding the country together, which shows that BiafraNigeria is not a secular state.

The Establisment principle is the principle that a state should maintain absolute neutrality in matters of religion. Since BiafraNigeria is a constitutional Peter Pan, in addition to looking at the letters of BiafraNigeria's constitution, it bears scrutiny of the U.S. Constitution to understand the relevance of this principle to the establishment of state Sharia law in BiafraNigeria. The U.S. Constitution is after all BiafraNigeria's purported model, and it is the most advanced and resilient written constitution on the face of the Earth.

While much focus has been placed on Taliban Sani Yerima of Zamfara, in his BBC appearance, Obusonjo freely admitted that he was the one that in 1978 inserted Sharia into the 1979 Constitution of BiafraNigeria. This is an important confession, even though people like Rev. Nnorom have repeatedly cited Obasanjo as the chief culprit in creating the Sharia anomy to the Establisment principle. Simply put, the Yoruba have done more for Sharia than the Hausa-Fulani Muslims have. Ahmadu Bello was unable to implement Sharia on this scale. Obasanjo is the father of BiafraNigerian Sharia law.

The incorrect impression that is bandied about by certain observers is that the Yoruba have as much interest in preventing the spread of Sharia as Nd'Igbo have. NEWS FLASH! The Yoruba have no problem with Sharia. The governor of Lagos, one of the most important states in the Southwest, is a Muslim. The Yoruba are distributed in Islam, animism, and Christianity. The same cannot be said about Nd'Igbo. One does not travel two blocks through the streets of Lagos or the other Yoruba states without being assaulted with sounds of Alahu Akbar. The Yoruba are not disturbed by Sharia. Nd'Igbo are, and it is Nd'Igbo and the minorites of the East that must fight the spread of Sharia. Obasanjo sees Biafrans as the only people that have a problem with Sharia. It is precisely that reality that Obasanjo highlighted in his BBC announcement that BiafraNigeria is “NOT a Secular State.”

Obasanjo was obtuse enough to compare the adoption of Sharia in the North with the Ten Commandments of the Bible. What he failed to do was to show us THE ACT OF STATE in enacting the Ten Commandments as law in any of the predominantly Christian states in Biafra or anywhere else in BiafraNigeria. Nowhere in Biafra or BiafraNigeria has Christian ecclesiasticism become state law. The same cannot be said of the northern Sharia states of BiafraNigeria, especially Zamfara where leglislature has enacted Sharia laws.

Without resorting to a prologue on constitutional history, it remains irrefutable that in all civilized societies, the twin and interchangeable principles of secularity of the State and separation of Church and State are grounded in the following restrictions under law, which restrictions may also exist in variants of the following words:
quote:
A STATE SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION
The BiafraNigerian version of this law states
quote:
The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion. See, Constitution of BiafraNigeria, Chapter I, Part II, § 10.
The Jeffersonian interpretation of the separation-of-church-and-state stricture is that the First Amendment must erect a “wall between church and state,” and that wall must be kept high and impregnable.

In the United States, the Supreme Court, in Wisconsin v. Yoder, interpreted the Establishment Clause to include that a regulation neutral on its face may in its application nonetheless offend the Constitutional requirement for governmental neutrality in religion if it unduly burdens the free exercise of religion.

The same court in Everson v. Board of Education held that the “establishment of religion” clause of the First Amendment means at least this:
quote:
Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another. Neither can force nor influence a person to go to or to remain away from church against his will or force him to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion. No person can be punished for entertaining or professing religious beliefs or disbeliefs, for church attendance or non-attendance. No tax in any amount, large or small, can be levied to support any religious activities or institutions, whatever they may be called, or whatever form they may adopt to teach or practice religion. Neither a state nor the Federal Government can, openly or secretly, participate in the affairs of any religious organizations or groups and vice versa. In the words of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect “a wall of separation between Church and State.”
Although the Establishment Clause does not require the state to be their adversary, that Amendment requires the state to be neutral in its relations with groups of religious believers and non-believers; State power is no more to be used so as to handicap religions, than it is to favor them. Today, State power is used to promote and propagate Islamic-Sharia law to the detriment of Christianity and other religions in the North of BiafraNigeria. State Sharia Law is routinely used to strip away the rights of Biafrans in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, and the other northern Sharia states, rights granted under a purported federal constitution.
