Duke Apologises To Igbos Over Communal Clash

"GOVERNOR Donald Duke of Cross River State has apologised to the Igbo community in the state over the massive loss suffered by their traders in during the recent Apiapum/Ofatura communal clash in Obubra local government area of the state.

The clash led to the death of not fewer than 40 persons while property worth over N5 billion were destroyed. Consequently, the state government set up a judicial commission of inquiry."

Governor Duke has shown a good example worthy of emulation by the rest in south-south and south-east.

You are right. We need to build the bridge of understanding among the peoples of the old Eastern BN.

But beyond that in this particular case, the Traders must be fully compensated. Their security should be strengthened. Apology is good. Like you know, apology alone will not put food on the table of the dispossessed. It will not pay the School fees of their wards. It will not take care of the needs on their other dependants.

I think the time has come for us to set up a Lawyers Group that will challenge in court State Governments under whose domain Nd’Igbo are attacked, killed and their property looted and destroyed. Such Governments must be held accountable. They should have their date in court. Huge compensation should be demanded.

If this is done, it will deny them means of financing development projects in their Sates. That way they will realise the need to be proactive in checking the unprovoked and mindless slaughter of Nd’Igbo in their domains.

This we can do now, while working hard to actualise our dream, Biafra.
