quote: Against the backdrop of complaints of certain irregularities in the conduct of the governorship and presidential elections, the United States and South Africa have urged all the aggrieved politicians to seek redress at the election tribunals.
The SE, SS, SW(Afenifere), North and all the opposition political parties rejected the result announced by INEC. Where is the legitimacy of Obasanjo's election?
quote: South African President, Mr. Thabo Mbeki in a letter on the Nigerian election published in the ANC Today Newsletter, noted that "there were instances of irregularities in some parts of the country".
Nigeria is does not need external intervention to remove anybody imposed on them by foreign powers.
quote: In a statement in Lagos yesterday, the United States Embassy in Nigeria also noted reports of voting irregularities, as well as procedural flaws "particularly in collating and counting of votes", but reminded aggrieved politicians that "Nigeria's electoral law provides for investigation and redress, and we urge all persons and parties with complaints of electoral misconduct to provide their evidences to the complaint tribunals".
The US also commended "those political leaders who have called on their supporters to remain calm. "We call on all the political parties to resolve all their differences through peaceful, legal means. We appeal to political parties, the Obansanjo administration and the National Assembly to act swiftly to end electoral abuses and ensure the integrity of the electoral system".
The US and other foreign countries should leave Nigerians sort out their problems. The only thing is that the US should stop selling any weapons or anything to Nigeria as long as the problem is not solved and confirmed by the association of all the political parties in Nigeria.
The Iraqis or the Palestinians whose countries are under occupation, which tribunal or organisation will deal with their problems: AU, Arab League, EU or UN?
If the US cannot respect International law(UN), it would be wrong to advice others to follow the law.
quote:Buhari's arrest, the NCP said "democracy does not mean forced consensus on all issues, hence, aggrieved individuals, interest groups and parties in any democratic society have the options of taking several legal actions including peaceful mass protest. That is why section 40 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 guarantees the fundamental right of association and peaceful assembly. http://www.thisdayonline.com/news/20030426news01.html
Nigerians should protest peacefully and daily until another election is organized or there is a consensus between all the political parties. The tribunal, as pointed out by NCP, will not redress the situation. Nigerians should speak out now, unless we want the future generations to carry bombs on their backs to make their votes count? The fact that Nigeria's democracy is nascent should not be used as a pretext to rig elections nad keep illegitimate government in power. If we accept that, then it will continue to happen.
