Richard Dowden: Africa is likely to get trampled by the West 31 May 2003
quote:During the Cold War Africans used to explain their marginalisation with the proverb: "When elephants fight, the grass gets trampled." After the Cold War, Africa was even more marginalised and an extra line was added: "But when elephants make love the grass gets trampled even more."
The west should stop giving aids to Africa, the latter should also be encouraged to refuse them. They make africans a begging bowl. That is the mistake Mbeki, our former president, Obasanjo and the rest are making as regards NEPAD. How do they think that they will develop Africa through western aid? What do they think the west would gain from such a move?
African development means capable of producing enough food for the population, having the necessary medical care, etc. But this would mean more self-reliance and importing less from the west. How on earth did our so called leaders reason in this way? How do they think that the west would shoot themselves on the foot? The west could only help Africa in their own chosen areas. This is what France do with most of its former colonies: they give scolarships to Africans to study history, geograpahy, economics, but not science and technology.
As concerns loans, it is business as usual. The west do not give loans because they like Africans, but because they will make money by so doing, otherwise their money would be sleeping in the bank Likewise aids, that should stop. After all the loans the west give to African countries always come back to their banks as personal money, while emburdening African countries with debts. Otherwise a change of government could lead to their losing their money, which could explain their support of illegitimate and corrupt leaders in Africa. We are still waiting to hear Nigeria investigate the allegation that Haliburton, american company paid $2.4 m to an official to evade paying tax.

Where do you come off with this your Osama-like ideas about the West's relationship with African Nations? Have a cold one and chill, sister.
Bastard Ednut, shut up if you have no arguments to provide.

Bastard Ednut, The above article," Africa is likely to get trampled by the West" of which I provided a link, is based on the point of view of the writer. Just below that, I gave my point of view. If you have any ideas on the topic, then you make them known. It is as simple as that. But if you have run short of ideas, Bastard Ednut, then shut up.
