EU Parliament probes electoral fraud in Nigeria
Friday, June 06, 2003
quote:STRASBOURG — THE European Parliament yesterday called for a probe into cases of "massive electoral fraud" observed during Nigeria’s elections in April and said those responsible should be brought to justice. The EU’s elected assembly "calls for inquiries to be carried out without delay to establish responsibility for the fraud" in the presidential and parliamentary elections, seen as a key test of Nigerian democracy.
It also called for "judicial procedures against those responsible for the massive electoral fraud." The parliament "regrets that President (Olesegun) Obasanjo was invested without any steps having been taken to invalidate the controversial votes and re-establish confidence in the electoral process".
The resolution called for legal measures to guarantee the true independence of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the impartiality of the mass media. "In six states and, to a lesser degree, in five others, the EU observation mission detected massive electoral fraud" in the April 19 presidental election, the first to be held since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999. "The electoral fraud robs the results of all credibility," the text said.
Obasanjo is not doing Nigeria any good. He knows very well that he does not and will not have the support of most Nigerians. e had allowed. Instead of negotiating with the opposition to find a way out, he has decided to allow foreign countries be the judge in Nigeria. They can even use it to antagonize Nigerians since Obasanjo gave them the opportunity. What a shame!

Why did you call it old news? I posted it for three reasons: 1) I have just read it 2) I did not see it on the forum, unless it has been presented under another form 3) I had some comments to make on it
What are your own airhead criteria for posting a topic on this board?

Mota Ogallala, This is the first time I am trying to exchange ideas with you, the minimum you could have done was to make a good impression. Do you have anything to say or not? You are jumping from one point to another.

quote:Fresh facts are emerging on how President Olusegun Obasanjo is going about selecting the 42 people whose names will be submitted to the Senate for confirmation as ministers today.
The number of ministers may rise to 42 because the president has equally decided to nominate six other ministers to represent each of the geo-political zones in addition to one from each of the 36 states. http://www.thisdayonline.com/news/20030619news02.html
Where in the democratic world did Obasanjo learn that people are appointed to represent other people?
He can appoint whoever he wants, he can even appoint all the ministers from the SE or from the North, that won't remove anything from the rigged elections or render him legitimate. He has to stop wasting people's time, most of whom will not recognize him and anything he does.

Isn't there a difference between appointments and elections in a democracy?

Mota Ogallala, This is a civilized forum where people debate on ideas and not on individuals. It is over to you to respect yorself if you want.
It is very surpring that since the rigged elections Obasanjo is still making a list of ministers. Those who wanted to leave his cabinet because they are not ready to die for Obasanjo had been told that they could not leave. In fact Obasanjo envisaged protecting himself using foreign Israelis, PROTECT HIMSELF AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA.
Obasanjo is not doing Nigeria any good because he does not have the support of the majority of Nigerians, who did not vote for him. Nigerians are just watching him parade himself as 'president'. Are you following?

If your tiny minority of Ibo clan did not vote for Obasanjo, would that really deny him of electoral victory?

Mota Ogallala, I do not know where you were when we were talking of how Obasanjo rigged the elections everywhere in Nigeria, including the south West where the number of votes cast was greater than the number of registered. But I am sorry that i am not coming back to it, you can find them on this board if really you want to know. There was no way the SE could have voted Obasanjo when Ikemba was a candidate. The same applied to the North as regards Buhari. Obasanjo should stop wasting people's time, he is not rendering any service to that nation.

ANPP Senators stage walkout *Resolution on election divides Senate
By Reuben Yunana
quote:A motion urging the Senate to condemn the damaging resolution of the European Union (EU) parliament on last April’s general elections yesterday divided the Senate as all ANPP Senators staged a walkout when the PDP controlled Upper House insisted on debating the motion.
"As Senators of the Federal Republic, we should be seen to be protecting the laws and our Rules. The motion is not worthy of debate since there are pending cases before the courts and election tribunals.
EU probe confirmed massive fraud and irregularities in the elections.
