Charles Taylor of: Hour of Reckoning, Asylum in Nigeria, etc.?

Plans are afoot to bring Lawrence Taylor into exile in Nigeria. With Liberian rebels at the outskirts of Liberia’s capital city, Monrovia, the US may send troops to Liberia to restore order, but the US would only do so if President Taylor steps aside. Should Lawrence Taylor of Liberia accept temporary asylum in Nigeria?

Bush has ordered Obasanjo to go to Liberia and offer a temporary asylum deal to the Liberian president.
quote:
Despite strong pressure from the United States to resign immediately, Mr Taylor says he will only step down after a US-led peacekeeping force in place in Liberia

The United Nations is in principle opposed to the exile option because it would mean President Taylor avoiding prosecution at the UN-backed war crimes tribunal in neighbouring Sierra Leone, where, according to the UN, Mr Taylor supported rebels responsible for widespread atrocities

What is in it for Nigeria?

If Biafranigeria had a real government, while in Biafranigeria, Charles Taylor would be tried for the Murder of 2 of our journalists in 1989.

Wacko:

Besides the two journalists you mentioned we must also count the 500 Nigerians who were massacred, in church in Monronvia where they had gone to seek the safety that their government could not provide them, by Charles Taylor and his gypsy army.

We must add the hundreds of Nigerian ECOMOG soldiers who were killed by Taylor in his Operation Octopus to capture the capital and drive the Nigerian defenders to the sea. We must also include in these counts the additonal Nigerian soldiers who died in Sierra Leone fighting Taylor's sponsored terror.

It is only an illegitimate government far removed from the pulse of its peoples or one with a short memory that would dare offer asylum to one who had killed many of its citizens. Instead, that government and country owes it to itself to bring such a murderer to justice. Asylum - no matter how temporary - to a person like Taylor in a country like Nigeria would be a great cause of lamentation to the families and children of those Nigerians who lost their lives trying to stop the evil and terror that Charles Taylor represents.

You guys might as well go down to your local zoo, look for the biggest gorrilla you can find there and begin to teach him nuclear physics. Please don't frustrate yourselves by attempting to attribute any reason to the irrational actions of wild animals.
Do you think Taylor is being let in for free,or have you all forgotten how rich Taylor may be ? I think the west will eventually extradict and try him after he has been relieved of his loot in Abuja. Go ask men like Maurice Ibekwe what it cost him to remain free all these years. Na big fish oga catch so.

Why are they building a home for Charles Taylor in Calabar? Why don't they send him to the North or to the West? Pretty soon, his presence will attract terrorists and Taylor's enemies to Calabar.

All of a sudden, George Bush wants UN approval before sending US troops into a foreign country.
quote:
The United States on Friday pushed for a U.N. Security Council vote that would authorize a multinational force to intervene in Liberia to implement a cease-fire to end the country's bloody civil war.

U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte called for closed-door consultations of the 15-member council for 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT) to distribute a revised draft of the resolution and hoped for a vote on Friday evening, his spokesman said.
With the first contingent of Nigerian troops expected to land in Liberia on Monday, the resolution lays the groundwork for any U.S. involvement but does not spell out the role American soldiers would play.

But it makes clear that Liberian President Charles Taylor would have to leave the country and that possible U.S. participation would be brief.

The measure calls for U.N. peacekeepers to replace multinational troops by Oct. 1, a date most U.N. officials believe is too soon to organize and dispatch troops.

"Within the house there is some concern about that tight deadline," said U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard, adding that timing also would depend on whether any West African troops would join the U.N. force. But U.S. officials argued that extra funds and equipment on hand would allow the United Nations to move fast.

Will Emeka be the Aguiyi Ironsi of Liberia or will he be the bumbling Victor Malu and the other botchers that IBB/Abacha sent to Liberia and Sierra-Leone? With a name like that, I am sure that the evil man of Aso Rock is already plotting Emeka's failure in the mission.

Col. Onwuama-Egbu is actually the Army spokesperson and is not a combatant.

However the Head of mission is Brig-General Festus Okonkwo. I'm really hoping the Nigerian Army wont let us down again.

Don't come to Calabar, indigenes warn Taylor

By Bassey Inyang

Daily Independent, Calabar

There are strong indications that a cold and unfriendly reception awaits the embattled Liberian President, Mr Charles Taylor, in Calabar, Cross River State, where the Federal Government has arranged a permanent base for him and members of his immediate family for asylum.

Calabar indigenes, known for their hospitality, have this time around advised Taylor not to come to the place, declaring him a persona non grata (unwanted person)

From every indication, Taylor and his family would face the wrath of hostile indigenes and warm reception from only government functionaries.

A cross section of residents who spoke with Daily Independent on Taylor's asylum, expressed displeasure at the idea of the Federal Government to make Calabar a home for all manner of people.

They also criticised the government for spending the scarce resources of the nation on the renovation of some structures that would accommodate the Liberian leader and his aides.

A human rights activist, Dr. Imanson Ekim, president-general and coordinator of the Congress for Protection of Citizens Rights (CPCR), told Daily Independent that by granting Taylor asylum in Nigeria, the government had again demonstrated that it is insensitive to the feelings of Nigerians.

Ekim noted that the mass criticism against asylum for Taylor is borne out of genuine concern for the man and his aides to remain in Liberia and face the consequences of their bad human rights records.

He noted that people of Cross River State should not have been associated with an evil man such as Taylor. He said the government should have directed funds for Taylor's upkeep to development projects to improve the lives of the people.

Chief Michael Okon Eyo, a community leader in Qua One in Calabar metropolis, stated that the decision to accord Taylor "a hiding place" in Calabar, was not in the interest of indigenes of the state.

According to Eyo, the Liberian president should be taken to the international crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone to account for those he killed, including Nigerians.

He said Taylor's asylum in Calabar would be resisted by the youth, adding that his movement and activities should be closely monitored should he eventually come to Nigeria, Calabar, in particular.

Ednut are u talking about this picture?

Aremu seems to be talking to Kuffuor of Ghana, ahead of the pack, so its either a spatial visual illusion, or Aremu is cockily practising some fingering maneauvers as u say.

If so, he can apparently talk walk and chew gum (or is it finger) all at the same time.

The last thing on Taylors mind right now is what Aremu is doing to his wife.

Aremu is thinking: AM DUH MAN!!

Lucky ape! [Big Grin]

As far as I am concerned, compared with Obasanjo, Charles Taylor is a distinguished African statesman. I hope we have not removed a democratically elected Christian from office so that a bunch of Muslim rebels can take over Liberia. It is well known that the majority of the Liberian rebels are Islamic jihadists.

Dave,

Your assessment of the scenario is on the spot.

Though many Liberians I know over here are tired of the fighting, they do not want the incursion of Hausa Fulani from Guinea, and in a way do not want what Alasaine Ouattarra introduced into Ivory Coast against Laurent Gbagbo, just because the Western powers are tired of inaccess due to Strongmen such as the bloodied and criminal Taylor.

Maybe someone could explain the planned kidnapping by Americans of Charles Taylor, a man who was given assylum in Nigeria when Bush was too scared to send US troops into Liberia.
quote:
Following a $2 million ransom the United States offered for information leading to the capture of former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, who is on exile in Calabar, BiafraNigeria, security has been beefed around the ex-warlord. Taylor, who prior to the American pronouncement moved around Calabar without any escort...
This is one time when Obasanjo's "Kill and go" will be most appropriate for anyone caught trying to capture Taylor.
