500,000 Nigerians seek US visa lottery yearly
•2007-2008 edition begins
By SEGUN ADIO and KAYODE ADEWALE
No fewer than five thousand Nigerians apply for the American Visa Lottery every year, making Nigeria one of the countries with the highest number of applicants for the programme. The United States has also announced the commencement of the 2007-2008 edition of the scheme which kicked off last Tuesday October 10.

Briefing newsmen in Lagos yesterday on the programme, Amy Lyllas, Consular Officer at the US Consulate said the interest shown by Nigerians for the programme is an indication that it is a welcome scheme in the country.

Lyllas maintained that Nigerians since inception of the scheme have always been accorded courtesy by the American government. Denying that there was not truth in the story making the rounds that the North American government plans to include Nigeria in the list of countries that are barred from the scheme.

Said he: “It is interesting to note that Nigerians have always been favoured by the US in the scheme with increased numbers of successful applicants every year.” Lyllas told newsmen that for last year, 9,000 Nigerians won the chance to live in the US but only 6,000 were able to scale through the region screening process.

The Consular officer however warned Nigerians to be wary of fraudsters who may pose as Embassy officials or agents to help them process their application. She advised Nigerians to visit the website designed for the scheme to apply.
