13 Nigerians in danger in S/Arabia

hirteen Nigerian lives are now in danger in various prisons in Saudi Arabia as a result of the intense torture they are being subjected to.

The Nigerians, all Yoruba, were among various people arrested by Saudi policemen on September 28, 2002 at a car wash in Bab-Sherif, old Jeddah.

Before the September 28, 2002 incident where about 350 people were arrested, the Saudi police had been regularly harassing the people at the car wash on the excuse that they should not make use of the place.

During the incident, there was a scuffle with plain-clothes policemen, where a Saudi was wounded and later died in hospital.

Following this, 350 people were arrested, out of which 300 were deported and the other 50 detained and tortured.

Out of this 50 were 13 Nigerians said to have been handpicked while the rest were taken to court. Even after the court ruled that they should be released, the Saudi prison officials refused to release them.

The remaining 13 are now scattered in three prisons in Saudi Arabia, at Al-Race, — Sijon and Amba where they are being.

The 13 Nigerians boys are Abass Mojeed, Murtala Amao, Abass Azeez, Kazim Afolabi, Ahmed Shobayo, Nurudeen Owoalade and Nurudeen Sani.

Others are Abdulahi Yusuff, Nafiu Obadina, Ahmed Suberu, Yahid Elebute, Abass Afolabi and Sulaiman Olufemi.

Some Nigerians in Saudi Arabia have alleged that the Nigerian Embassy refused to come to the aid of the 13 boys being detained because the victims were Yorubas.

They said that if the embassy could come to their aid, the issues would be sorted out as parents of the dead boy were not ready to pursue the case.
