I have just read that the newly ordained cardinal Olubunmi Okogie is angry with the "federal" government of BiafraNigeria. The Cardinal is mad because it took the government a long time to send him a letter of congratulation. Is this not a sign of vanity on the cardinal's part. Why does he care when sinners send a message to congratulate him.
quote:
BiafraNigeria’s resident Cardinal, Anthony Olubunmi Okogie has frowned at the Federal Government’s congratulatory message to him on his investiture, describing it as belated. Okogie expressed displeasure at the attitude of the Federal Government over his appointment as cardinal, saying that the Presidency not only sent a belated congratulatory letter, but also left the letter unsealed. Lamenting the lukewarm attitude of the Federal Government to his appointment, Okogie pointed out that the Ghanaian Cardinal was given two separate receptions, one by the state and the other by the Embassy in Rome shortly after the investiture last Tuesday. His words: “Lagos State government has stolen the show from the Federal Government.
Never mind that he says the lukewarm attitude from the FG did not bother him. He sure isn't like one not bothered.

Now that we have a /Yoruba Cardinal, the whole world will think he is the Pope of the Black race. You see how quickly the Yoruba press started splashing that man's pictures all over the web? Does anyone even remember cardinal Ekandem anymore?

I couldn;t agree with you more, Cardinal Ekandem was the first and highly respected Cardinal from Biafranigeria, until he died you never read his name in any of the ngwati press. Now they are flashing Okogie picture all over the place. As much as I like and respect Cardinal Okogie, I think he is been petty here.

Stop the madness. Olubunmi Okogie is urhobo and a Lagosian. He has no ties to Yoruba or the so called ngbati-ngbati press. Copy that?

Ejiro:

I saw that one coming. Most of us know that Okogie was born Urhobo; he is one of those Urhobas or Urhobo/Yorubas like Tony Anenih from the same place. That's why I called him a /Yoruba man. His name "Olubunmi" is not an Urhobo name, and Okogie speaks better Yoruba than Awolowo.

Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie got not only a BELATED congratulatory message from Obasanjo’s (touted to be an ardent bible-believing Christian) government, he received the letter UNSEALED!

Now, I do not know about YOU—yes you, the reader—but I think that was just the height of discourtesy. Why bother sending a congratulatory message when you don’t have the gumption or the decency to put the letter in a sealed envelop, of all things? And this is supposed to be coming from a government with a CHRISTIAN at its helm of Affairs. To put it mildly, I am just disgusted.

Sometimes, I just can’t help thinking OUT LOUD that had it been a Muslim, he would have gone the extra step to acknowledge something as grand as this that tends to portray Nigeria in a better light. For anyone that does not know yet, Cardinals are like princes in the Roman Catholic Church. They are second in command only to the pope, and it is amongst them that future popes are elected from.

Nigeria undoubtedly is amongst the nations with the HIGHEST number of Roman Catholics but so far, with all that massive following, she has produced just ONE canonized saint and only 3 cardinals. One of the cardinals is dead already and so at the moment, she has only 2. Any president who knew the potential PR bonanza that recognizing the Cardinal might generate would have strived to show it by his actions.

I still remember how that Abacha, (a MUSLIM for Pete’s sake) spent millions to welcome the Pope during the beatification of Father Tansi.

Ghana has produced just one cardinal, but her embassy in Rome gave her cardinal a grand reception. And when the new cardinal got home, he was welcomed with another state-sponsored reception. It is not as if Ghana has more resources than Nigeria. Perhaps, what they have is patriotic national pride and a willingness to recognize officially the brightest ones amongst them.

Perhaps, we can rationalize that the president and by extension Nigeria, has a lot of more pressing issues to bother about. However, there is nothing that says that this government couldn’t have deferred this issue to give the cardinal a worthier congratulatory message when it finally sets out to do so. But just like all things Nigerian, all the government could afford was a scanty, shabbily-composed letter delivered after her irresponsibility had stared her long in the face—and worse, delivered UNSEALED! It might as well be a letter of rebuke. If I was the Cardinal, I would have spat at the manifestly derisive missive and flung it back in the face of the deliverer!

Anyways, seeing as Nigerians are so used to harsh treatment that they have quietly begun to become incapable of appreciating basic courtesy, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone argues that Okogie should be happy that he got a letter at all! To those, I would just have to remind that the government did not OWE Cardinal Okogie ANY congratulations in the first place! If out of their volition, they decided to honor the Cardinal, decency demands that they do that respectably—or else, they can keep their thrice-accursed felicitations to themselves!

And oh, if I was to personalize the issue, I’d like to see how many people would like a birthday or any other special occasion cards delivered days or weeks after the event in unsightly packages!

I kind'a wonder why the Cardinal is Yoruba with an Igbo last name? I guess he must be half and half or is he actually full blooded?

ADVISE TO THE CARDINAL.
Do not feel betrayed by the half abbrazzo given to you by Obasanjo and the North. Look at it this way, it is more a vernom [out-spokeness]for you to bury the Nigerian government, after all, that is one special reason why you got the post. The modern day Pope or catholics do not give out ranks to wimps. You gotta be able to speak against the satanic verses and on behalf of the poor to merit such a promotion.

Hail Biafra
