Major-General Philip Effiong's broadcast ending 30 months of bloody strife.
Broadcast on Monday, January 12, 1970
quote:Fellow Countrymen,
As you know, I was asked to be the officer administering the Government of this republic on the 10th of January, 1970. Since then, I know that some of you have been waiting to hear a statement from me. I have had extensive consultations with the leaders of the community, both military and civil, and I am now encouraged and hasten to make this statement to you by the mandate of the Armed Forces and the people of this country. I have assumed the leadership of the Government.
Throughout history, injured people have had to resort to arms in their self-defense where peaceful negotiations fail. We are no exception. We took up arms because of the sense of insecurity generated in our people by the events of 1966. We have fought in defense of that cause.
I take this opportunity to congratulate officers and men of our Armed Forces for their gallantry and bravery which had for them the admiration of the whole world. I thank the civil population for their steadfastness and courage in the face of overwhelming odds and starvation. I am convinced now that a stop must be put to the bloodshed which is going on as a result of war. I am also convinced that the suffering of our people must be brought to an immediate end. Our people are now disillusioned and those elements of the old Government regime who have made negotiations and reconciliation impossible have voluntarily removed themselves from our midst.
I have therefore instructed an orderly disengagement of troops. I am dispatching emissaries to make contact with Nigeria's field commanders in places like Onitsha, Owerri, Awka, Enugu and Calabar with a view to arranging armistice. I urge General Gowon, in the name of humanity, to order his troops to pause while an armistice is negotiated in order to avoid the mass suffering caused by the movement of population.
We have always believed that our differences with Nigeria should be settled by peaceful negotiations. A delegation of our people is therefore ready to meet representatives of Nigeria Federal Government anywhere to negotiate a peaceful settlement on the basis of OAU resolutions. The delegation will consist of the Chief Justice, Sir Louis Mbanefo as leader, Professor Eni Njoku, Mr. J. I. Emembolu, Chief A. E. Bassey and Mr. E. Aguma. The delegation will have full authority to negotiate on our behalf.
I have appointed a council to advise me on the Government of the country. It consists of the Chief Justice, Sir Louis Mbanefo, Brigadier P. C. Amadi (Army), Brigadier C. A. Nwawo (Army), Captain W. A. Anuku (Navy), Wing Commander J. I. Ezeilo (Air Force), Inspector-General of Police, Chief P. I. Okeke, Mr. J. I Emembolu (Attorney-General), Professor Eni Njoku, Dr. I. Eke, Chief A. E. Udofia, Chief Frank Opigo and Chief J. M. Echeruo. Any question of government in exile is repudiated by our people.
Civilian population are hereby advised to remain calm and cooperate with the the Armed Forces and the Police in the maintenance of law and order. They should remain in their homes and stop mass movements which have increased suffering and loss of lives.
On behalf of our people, I thank those foreign Governments and friends who have steadfastly given us support in our cause. We shall continue to count on their continued help and counsel. I also thank His Holiness the Pope, the Joint Church Aid and other relief organizations, for the help they have given for the relief of suffering and starvation. I appeal to all Governments to give urgent help for relief and to prevail on the Federal Military Government to order their troops to stop all military operations.
May God help us all.

A very sad development indeed it appears Effiong has truly passed on. May God grant his soul eternal rest, he was a good man. -------------------------------------------------- Ex-Biafran Chief, Philip Effiong Dies By Nduka Nwosu
Less than 48 hours marking the end of the seventieth birthday celebration of former Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, his deputy in the 30 months civil war, Obong Philip Effiong died in his home town Uyo yesterday.
Although details of his death were not given, Effiong who was to celebrate his 79th birthday party less than two weeks from his exit had in recent times worked tirelessly in the publication of his autobiography: Nigeria And Bifra My Story, detailing his experiences during the civil war and the burden of acting as Biafra's head of state shortly after Ojukwu went into exile to Cote D'Voire "in search of peace."
Sadly, war historians who had waited for Effiong, Biafran Major General and Chief Of General Staff who formally submitted a letter of surrender to Col Olusegun Obasanjo, will be missing his intimate experience of that episode.
He had promised a number of writers using the occasion of the last World Igbo Congress in Houston Texas where he ws invitedm to deliver a lecture that My Story and one or two other biographies on him would soon be published.
Chronicled as the first Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps and School Commandant Col Effiong, pioneered the corps which till date has had in its roll call over 38 commandants. Under him the combat support service arm of the army grew and prospered.
Born on November 18, 1924, Obong Philip Efiong was until his death the Akangkang of Ibiono Ibom in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
He joined the Nigerian Army on 28 July 1945 at Enugu in Eastern Nigeria, and rose through the ranks until 11 January 1956 when he received the Queen's Commission after his officer cadet training at Eaton Hall in Chester. He went on to do his post commissioning training in various parts of the United Kingdom and also with the British Army of the Rhine (BOAR) in Western Germany.
After his services as Company Commander during a peacekeeping mission in the Republic of Congo in 1961, Obong Efiong was transferred to the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps and then proceeded to Britain again where he attended a long ordnance course at the Royal Army Ordnance Corps School in Blackdown, near Aldershot.
This course led to his being awarded Associate Member of the British Institute of Management (AMBIM). On completion of his ordnance training, he became the first Nigerian Commander of the Ordnance Depot in Yaba, Lagos in 1962, and the first Nigerian Director of Ordnance Services of the Nigerian Army in 1963. This was the post he held when the first coup d'Ztat took place on January 15, 1966. He was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time.
Later in January 1966, Obong Efiong was posted to Major General Aguiyi Ironsi's Supreme Headquarters in Lagos as the first Principal Staff Officer.
In July 1966 he was posted to Kaduna where he was appointed Acting Brigade Commander of the 1st Brigade, Nigerian Army, when the July 29, 1966 counter coup d'Ztat took place. After successfully escaping several attempts on his life, he finally made it to Enugu on the directive that all military officers return to their regions of origin.
When the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War broke out in 1967, he subsequently took command under the Biafran secessionist military government and rose to the rank of Major General. In Biafra, Obong Efiong played an active role as the Chief of General Staff. He eventually brought the Civil War to an end when, as Officer Administering the Government of Biafra, he signed the Surrender Instrument in Lagos on January 15, 1970.
With the end of the Civil War ended in 1970, Obong Efiong went into business. After the ban on politics was lifted in 1979, he briefly participated in the political process that saw the transition from military to civilian rule. He is married with eight children.

The history of Nigeria will not be complete without a mention of this guy's name. Hopefully, he will have time to reconcile with the countless number of civilian and military Biafrans that he, in collaboration with " those elements of the old Government regime who have made negotiations and reconciliation impossible " stubbornly coaxed into staying on in an unwinnable war. May God grant his soul repose!

Let our Biafran flags fly at half mast today. (where are our graphics experts), and if the Biafranigerian govt knows what is good for them, they better follow suit and pay respects to their superior.
Adieu great leader. May your soul rest in God's perfect peace. Amen.

Those who watched "SCHINDLERS LIST" about the exploits of Oscar Schindler in the then Nazi Germany will recall the scene where the sadistic jail warden at the death camp had arrayed prisoners for interrogation over some petty offense punishable by his summary execution.
How when this sadist had pointed out a little pre teenage Jewish boy to name the culprit after having shot a couple of adult Jews, the boy with his wits about him and full of gusto yelled out: "That one! He did it!!! pointing to a dead victim, and sparing other victim Jews of unnecessary humiliation and harrassment at the hands of a propped up coward bully having his day in the sun.
Such was the Noble Effiongs statement which though like throwing a dog a bone, Addy has shamelessly felt free to extrapolate to suit his fancy.

When it comes to stating that Biafra's enemies are savages, General Philip Effiong was unequivocal. The Bible is filled with Saints who, in order to save innocent lives, momentarily told the enemy what the enemy needed to hear. In 2002, Effiong call the savages by their full names, "traitors:"
Gowon and the other Nigerian wild animals have never been confused about Effiong's Biafran loyalties. That must be why they denied him his well deserved pension till his death.

I guess you were not blind to other things Effiong said including;
quote:On behalf of our people, I thank those foreign Governments and friends who have steadfastly given us support in our cause. We shall continue to count on their continued help and counsel. Maybe you should concern yourself with finding out who were the individuals responsible for the starvation Effiong is referring to. If you want to believe Ojuwkwu made negotiations impossible you should also believe Gowon and Awolowo were mass murderers. I would have you know that Ojukwu left Biafra with all of Effiongs family, and if there was any rift in the Biafran high command I doubt Effiong would have entrusted his family to his detractor.
You always pop up in BNW when you think you have found the soft underbelly of the pro Biafra/Igbo members of this forum. Before you start quoting Effiong you need to go back to the thread on the Yoruba coward who tried to use juju and explain this cowardly trait you folks exhibit so frequently. The unwinnable war you refer to is that of the OPC dislodging Ndigbo from the markets in Lagos. Those traders will continue to fleece you folks for as long as the sun rises and all the juju in the world will not change anything.

History shall remember this great man who lost all that he might win the struggle for self-preservation; whose sacrifices in the interest of the nation had given life and hope to many then and now.
Another burning star from the East has finally gone. Adieu great soldier, father, brother, daddy, friend and guardian.
And so, may the radiant memories of Akakang Ibimo Ibom shine eternally in our hearts.

May God grant repose to General Effiong's soul.
I have not confirmed the information. But, a little while ago, I was informed that General Effiong attended General Ojukwu's recent 70th birthday celebration. As Chiboy pointed out, in 1970 (the 'eve' of Effiong's amistice broadcast), Effiong requested that General Ojukwu take all of his (Effiong's) family when Ojukwu left Biafra.
Whatever Effiong may have said in that broadcast, he said it knowing that his family was in good hands. I wonder what was going through his mind, what he feared the vandals would do to his wife and children.
Adieu, General Philip Effiong!

Biafrans will never forget Effiong. Here is a report by Maazi Emeka Onumonu.
quote:The Biafra Movement – A Report
“A Report to the People’s General – Maazi Obong Philip Effiong”
By Maazi Nnaemeka Mene Onumonu
“Instead of surrendering Biafra, Effiong surrendered what he called “this country”, and nowhere in the entire broadcast did Effiong name the country he was surrendering. The importance of that deliberate omission only became clear recently when the Biafran Liberation Movement (BLM) and other groups resumed the struggle for Biafran independence.”
Maazi Kingsley Nwankwo (BNW News)
The People’s General
When it was fashionable for Biafran leaders to deny Biafra,
You stood your ground.
When others Biafran leaders sold their souls and got in bed with Biafran/Igbo oppressors,
You stood with Oha at great cost to you.
You never wavered in your belief of the justness of the Biafran cause,
And when asked for Biafran surrender,
You surrendered a fictitious country called, “this country”.
You were unapologetic in your stand and belief in Biafra’s actualization.
You remained a Biafran till death.
Maazi Effiong – THE PEOPLE’S GENERAL, OHA claim you as their own.
Your feet might not have touched the Promised Land – “New Biafra”,
But your eyes, mind and soul have seen “New Biafra” and its potential to the Black race and the to the world.
Ndeewo, Great Leader, you will be missed!
Maazi Onumonu
*************
Maazi Effiong Ndeewo,
About seven years ago, the re-implementation of the Biafran Revolution Movement was set in motion, a dream that we now realize was very dear to your heart as events have continued to show. Please accept this as an update, even if post-mortem.
The fate of Igbo and all the minorities that are at present being marginalized in the british birthed abomination of a country called Nigeria are interwoven, hence if you will allow me, although this report will be directed to and is about Igbo, the other nations can see it also as a reflection of their yearning for true freedom and/or independence.
Peaceful Actualization of Biafra:
As you already know, Biafra and Ala Igbo in particular has been under occupation by the nigerian vandals since the so called end of the Biafra/nigeria war. In fact the occupation has been so brutal that Igbo is gradually being marginalized out of existence. A plan of gradual strangulation that was put in place by the genocidal victors of that war continue to lay waste Igbo land, talent, her children and and her vast human resources. The tradition and custom of Ndi Igbo has been turned upside down and abomination has now become the norm in Igbo land. Traitors continue to be put over Ndi Igbo by these animals who hate all things Igbo and are only interested in Islamizing Ala Igbo or converting Igbo to a slave nation if Islamization is not achievable.
After the genocidal war in which more than 3 million innocent Biafrans were either starved to death or out rightly massacred, a genocidal war in which but for the Grace of YAH, Igbo in Nne Ala Igbo (Igbo Land) would have wiped out, Igbo was in no mood to put up an armed resistance. Her leaders had joined the oppressors of Ndi Igbo and had become house-slaves of these Igbo slave masters.
Under these circumstances any call for Igbo to start an armed resistance was doomed to fail, for the oppressors of Ndi Igbo had cut out the heart of Igbo, they thought.
The challenge then was not only to get Ndi Igbo to stop identifying with their oppressors but Igbo had to be convinced that there was salvation for Igbo outside the british birthed abomination nigeria, a Herculean task if left to the human imagination. But we knew that to Yah, all things are possible, even salvation for Igbo!
"Yah - Thou", "Yahnwe - Thou that owns", "Yahnweuwa - Thou that owns the universe", "Ama Ama Amasi Amasi - The Unknowable One" ,..., "Chi na Eke - God continues to Create" had an answer. Yah put the solution into the minds of Yah's children - THE PEACEFUL ACTUALIZATION OF BIAFRA.
Next we felt that that since the population of Igbo in Chicago was in the thousands and since we were already based in Chicago, all we had to do was carry this message to the our brethren and all would be history. Were we mistaken, Yah had other plans. Not only did all our organizations in Chicago turn us down, we were even labeled mad, two brethren (A physicist and a sculptor) that had gone mad and were about to lead Igbo back to slaughter - We had to be stopped or discouraged by all means. Every organization were probably advised to avoid us.
If we were not able to get the ears of our brethren or work through their organizations, we would start an organization of two if we had to. Again Yah had other plans. He sent us an Igbo American (Maazi EzeNdubuisi - may Yah continue to bless you where ever you might be). An American that had traced his roots to the village that his fore-fathers came from in Igbo land, learnt the language, tradition and customs of Ndi Igbo, and was actively practicing the Omenala of Igbo even here in America. "If you will accept us as Igbo, we will be members of your organization", he said. You see he was part of an organization of more than fifty Igbo Americans. General, could you imagine our joy at the turn of these wonderful event, to go from practically an organization of two to in fact one of the the biggest Igbo organization in diaspora in an instant - Does Yah work in mysterious ways or what? In fact Maazi EzeNdubuisi played a major role in the drafting of the mission statement of Ekwe Nche, its uncompromising stance on Igbo/Biafra, a masterpiece if I might so say.
Yes, Maazi Effiong, since we could not use any of our existing organizations as a vehicle of this unique idea of salvation for Igbo, a new organization, comprising of Ndi Igbo worldwide - Ekwe Nche, was born. Yes, Igbo Americans have been in the fore-front of the struggle for the survival of Ndi Igbo and their way of life. To our Igbo American brethren we say Ndeewo, as you continue on your uncompromising stance to help salvage the way of life of Ndi Igbo in Nne Ala Igbo (Igbo Land) by standing by your family as the fight for the actualization of Biafra intensifies, and more importantly as we join you in your mission to bring the message to Igbo Americans about their roots, may Yah continue to guide us in this most important task for this mission will lead to the independent nation of Biafra based on Igbo culture, tradition and philosophy.
Medium:
Zik of Africa used the newspaper medium to carry the gospel of independence to Africa (nigeria). Not only did we not have that type of money, time was of the essence. The damage to Igbo was accelerating at such a rate that if nothing was done real soon the damage would be irrevocable. AS usual Yah came to the rescue. The World Wide Web was already in place and more importantly, the mother of of Igbo discussion groups - "Igbo--net" was in place. We now had a medium to carry our message and goal of peaceful actualization of Biafra to Oha, and all it would cost was getting on the computer.
Ndewo, General Effiong.
