Fumigation may have killed ship's stowaways

Dave Mark
TWO African stowaways found dead in the hold of a cargo ship berthed at Hull may have been accidentally poisoned when their hiding place was sealed off and fumigated.

Humberside Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two men, thought to be from Ghana.
Their badly decomposed bodies were discovered on board the Cecdelta in Euro terminal 2 in Alexandra Dock, Hull, on Thursday.
Another stowaway was also found.
Yesterday it emerged the third person was a boy aged 14, who was unaware of the two men.
The crew discovered him hiding in a locker room three days after the vessel sailed from Africa, on January 21.
He has been questioned and has not been sent back to Takoradi.
The grisly discovery of the bodies was only made after the vessel docked in Hull to unload its cargo of shea nuts.
Insp Steve Page, of Humberside Police, said: "The circumstances suggest that the boy had no knowledge about the two deceased men in the hold.
"The ship is no longer a 'scene of crime' and the deaths are not being treated as suspicious."
He said the bodies were found in a sealed-off part of the ship, which would have been sealed shortly before she set sail. The men could have hidden in there, unaware it was about to be fumigated. The condition of the bodies suggested they had been dead for some time and could have been poisoned by the fumes within moments of leaving shore.
The coroner has been informed but the timing of an inquest will depend on identity issues.
Insp Page added: "Police will be seeking fingerprint evidence and hope to liaise with Interpol to establish their identities via the Ghana authorities. This could be a lengthy process."
