A Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, has taken over investigations of the murder of Aminasoari Dikibo, in the face of additional theories on the motive behind his death last Friday.
Among the new conspiracy theorists is civil rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
Fawehinmi insists that Obasanjo as well as other stalwarts of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) be investigated over the killing to get to the root of it.
Fawehinmi said in an interview in Lagos on Tuesday that Obasanjo's assertion on Sunday that Dikibo was killed by armed robbers "means he has more information on what actually happened and ought to assist the police."
Also a delegation led by PDP National Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, which called at the headquarters of the Delta State police command on Monday to see the car which Dikibo drove in expressed shock that the vehicle still lies in Kwale despite a directive that it be moved to the command for scrutiny. Ogbeh, asked the police to go beyond the armed robbery theory.
Police preliminary investigations say he was shot by robbers. However, emerging facts suggest other motives. His associates as well as other observers believe that Dikibo may have been killed by persons inside his car because of the deep impact of the shooting on his body.
Police sources said after the PDP delegation's visit that the man's brain was shattered by bullets, "suggesting a close range blast, shot possibly by someone inside the car."
Ogbeh's advice to the police to examine all possibilities in their probe also suggests doubt in his mind about the armed robbery theory.
Both Dikibo's driver and his police orderly were not injured in the shooting and the assailants did not remove a pin either from the deceased or from his car. Thus undermining the idea that he was killed by robbers.
Police sources confirmed on Tuesday that Onovo has arrived Asaba and now occupies the commissioner's seat at the command's headquarters to oversee the investigations.
Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, has urged politicians and civil servants to refrain from making further comments on the killing.
Information Commissioner, Mr. Magnus Onyibe, who issued a statement on his behalf, explained that it is to avoid impeding police investigations.
In his reaction, Fawehinmi added: "That the President spoke that way is significant as to how the man was killed. And I think the police should ask the President some questions. In fact, the investigation should start from Aso Rock to PDP and then to Rivers State in that order.
"We must not forget that Harry Marshall was the former PDP stalwart who decamped to the ANPP and he was assassinated. Dikibo's murder should raise eyebrows which ought to be looked into by both the police, the SSS and DMI.
"The President of Nigeria, General Olusegun Obasanjo in his usual unreasoning impetuousity has come up with a said conclusion with regard to the death of Dikibo.
"Dikibo was murdered on the night of Friday. The world woke up to hear of his death on Saturday which was a weekend. The President had his media chat on Sunday (also weekend) and said he was killed by armed robbers.
"Obviously no investigations could have been carried out. His conclusion was unnatural, unreasonable and against all the grains of lawful investigation. That the President spoke that is significant and so, the police should ask the president some questions."
Fawehinmi also said the agenda of the meeting which Dikibo was to attend is important if the police will get to the root of his death.
He asked: "What was the aim of the meeting? What agenda was in place? Was the meeting going to oppose some policies of the President? Was it going to discuss the plan to amend the Constitution so that there will be another opportunity for the President to run again?
"Was it out to resolve or create a united front for the South South people so that they could send a presidential candidate in 2007? Would the meeting affect the political calculation of the PDP for 2007?"
Insisting that the police should ask Obasanjo, why he had spoken so soon, Fawehinmi said the President was trying to divert the attention of the police.
He stressed that the investigations should be extended to PDP stalwarts and Rivers State so that Nigerians will be aware of how the ring of those who murdered him was formed.

Don't be silly. It is on record that the easiest way to die in Nigeria is to be a politician. Bola Ige, Harry, Okadigbo, and this guy, just to mention a few. They are all OBJ associates.

Ednut: Where or who this man is is TOTALLY IRREVANT. What is important and that must concern any man/woman of conscience is that A LIFE has been taken. Then the question arises to the effect to: by WHO and for WHAT?
Sylva: Please take it easy. Dont let the Ednuts who sometimes push people to the extrems make you say what you normally wouldn't.
ALL, Let's rivert to the ISSUES. Before the controversy generated by Obasanjo, when he went wild (as its his tradition to TALK before thinking) to say that "armed robbers" killed the anti-Igbo politician from Rivers State, the Nigerian police now claim that the bullet used in his clearly political-motivated has according to them "disappeared"!
If one counts the number of prominent and not so prominent Nigerians (politictians included) that have lost their lives (most through government sponsored terrorism) since 1999 Obasanjo came into office in Nigeria, it is becoming more evident that Nigeria under obasanjo has really become more DANGAROUS than it was under all the military dictators Nigeria had before him.
Yet some Nigerians (especially the Yorubas) are not ashamed to tell those who care to listen that we are in a "democracy".

The need to bear arms in Nigeria Not long ago, we read that Nigeria has sent a weather-observatory Satellite in space, though Nigeria did not seem to know exactly in which country it was launched and on what date.
We are still to see, at least a picture of Nigerians controlling information transmitted by the said satellite. Why didn't we see any? It could, like the Nigerian Airways, be controlled from foreign country or countries. Nothing being done by Nigerians or in Nigeria.
Like all photos observed from satellites, including those which permitted to take the decision to starve Iraqi children for years in the name of WMD, the same criminals could tell Obasanjo they they observe everything in Nigeria including insects.
Of course no murder in that country could escape the powerful imaging capabilities of the weather, murder, Zimbabwean farmers, etc observatory satellite. Who would Obasanjo believe, Nigerian police or his masters? Nigerians should bear arms to protect themselves from Murderers and from neighbouring Cameroon policemen if they venture into any part of Nigeria, Bakassi included of course.
