... I can use myself as an example, when I was appointed to set up the Nigeria Re-Insurance Corporation, I recruited people from every parts of Nigeria. And I made every Nigerian feel a sense of belonging. At that time, there was no Hausa man in insurance. They didn't understand insurance. I helped to set up an insurance school at Ahmadu Bello University, because I knew that in future if there is no Fulani man or Hausa man in Re-Insurance, you will have problem. They won't appreciate what insurance was all about. So, every year, I used to go to the university and recruit a whole class. Of course, it was easy for them to get a job at that time. I knew that half of them will go back. But those of them that stayed back are the ones leading in financial services enterprises. I was a teacher at the university. I was an examiner for ten years. And I did the same at University of Lagos... - Professor Joe Irukwu, SAN; New President General of Ohanaeze
Source: Sunday Vanguard, Febuary 8, 2004.

The respected legal and insurance guru stated as quoted above in an interview he granted to the paper. He said in the interview that the goal of the Ohanaeze under his leadership is to unite the Igbo and work with other ethnic groups in Nigeria to get what is due to the Igbo.

I carefully read the interview and I did not see where the erudite Prof. said he equally established an insurance school in Nsukka/Enugu, Port-Harcourt or Calabar. May be people from the East are born insurance experts.

This is a typical Igbo man, the Azikiwe school. An Igbo man is first an African, a Nigerian, before being an Igbo. And that is part of our problem. We all know that it is the opposite that the other groups uphold. In fact, their ethnic identity is what defines them and guides their decisions and actions in all circumstances.

From Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo, all the military tyrants to the archtyrant and Igbo hater, Obasanjo, who has currently 'yorubanised' Nigeria through and through, you can't see this sort of value-driven behaviour. It is even worst in the lower cadre, especially the cadre at which Prof. Irukwu served.

My question folks is: Why must the Igbo man continue to engage in this level of propriety, most times to the disadvantage of their own people?

I did not read anything on how the Ohanaeze election was conducted. Did Ndigbo vote all? What did Irukwu tell those who voted for him in order to win their votes?

I am convinced that if an Igbo election, in which participated all the Igbo, he wiil not be elected.

The problems of Ndigbo is that they understood that most of African problems are caused by non- Africans. As such they tend to favour unity. But it is not a reason to forget their people completely. It will change with time, the sooner the better.
