I wonder how these vehicles will do when 18 wheel trucks are used as the weapon of choice in a society that already have one of the worse roads in the world. We dey de watch what's gonna be up next as the world turns.

To train drivers abroad`
By Moses Ebosele,
Transport Reporter

IN a frantic search for insurance against the current spate of killings, at least 25 Nigerians, mostly politicians and industrialists, have placed orders for various models of bullet-proof vehicles.

The vehicles cost between N40 million and N45 million.

The drivers of the vehicles are to be sent to Germany for special courses in manoeuvring the vehicles when under attack.

The sales/ marketing manager of DamilerChrysler representative office in Nigeria, Mirko Plath, who disclosed this at the weekend however, declined to reveal the names of the 25 Nigerians.

According to Plath, all the vehicles are Mercedes Benz E-class, S-class and G-class models.

Potential owners of the vehicles have also been scheduled to travel to Germany in or before June for necessary imputs before the vehicles leave the production line.

Plath said Mercedes specialists are fully briefed on how the latest requirements are able to consolidate their position at the leading edge of vehicle protection technology and ballistics.

"With violence, drug-related crimes and random threats increasing on a global scale, Mercedes-Benz is responding with a comprehensive range of special-protection vehicles", according to information made available by Plath.

The attack on the convoy of the Benue State Governor, George Akume, during which a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) top shot, and former Managing Director of Nigerian Airways, Mr. Andrew Agom, was killed, had two weeks ago, thrown the nation into panic. One of the governor's security aides also died in the attack, few days later, Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu of Lagos was attacked twice in Awka, Anambra State during which one of his security aides, Mr. Olufemi Fatope was shot.

The list of casualties grows virtually daily. It includes the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, killed in December 2001; a member of the Osun state House of Assembly, Mr. Oduneya Olagbaju, a PDP top shot, Marshall Henry, killed in March 2003 and PDP national vice chairman for the South-South, Aminosoari Dikibo.

One of the most brutal and recent was the killing last week of the Kogi State Electoral Commissioner, Chief Phillip Olorunnipa. He was reportedly ordered to open his mouth and bullets were pumped in.

President Olusegun Obasanjo has, in response to the latest killings, held series of security meetings with police chiefs and other security` agencies.

According to Plath's firm, the Mercedes Benz vehicles have the following facilities:

High-protection, engineered to the European B4 resistance level, resist large-calibre revolver ammunition and offer particularly good protection against the increasing threat of drug-related and violent street crime;

high-protection vehicles, engineered to resistance level B6/B7m to provide effective protection against the threat posed by terrorist attacks; their armour can resist rifle - launched projectiles from molotary weapons which have a velocity almost twice that of bullets fired from a revolver. They also offer a high level of resistance to shrapnel from hand grenade and explosive charges.
For a high-level protection, according to information made available, the passenger cells of Mercedes-Benz Guard vehicles are surrounded by armour made from state-of-the-art materials such as glass/plastic combination and high-strength special steel.

The chassis is also designed to ensure that the characteristic Mercedes ride comfort is not impaired by the extra weight.

"Again, this is only possible because the protection specialists are able to establish and refine the necessary modification as early as the development phase.

"Additional security features of the Mercedes Benz Guard include run-flat tyres and optional extras such as protected fuel tanks and the panic alarm system. The latter can be activated from anywhere in the vehicle. It locks the doors to create a protected space and alerts the outside world by means of visual and audible alarm signals. It also allows communication with the outside world via an intercom" declared the auto firm.

Good question bearing in mind that one Chief Obafemi Awolowo was already using heavy duty trucks to drive across on-coming vehicles of his opponents in the first Republic.

Tell me what type of bullet proof car would protect somebody who attends Anenih's peace meeting. Na wah for WAEC.

But you have to give Balogun and Baba iyabo credit. They are beginning to deal decisively with political assassins like this

quote:
However, the appearance of heavily armed Mobile policemen on the scene allegedly changed the scenario especially as the policemen who were said to have been drafted to Ikere Ekiti at the weekend from the state command started shooting indiscriminately allegedly leading to the death of the six students.
Very efficient against un-armed MASSOB and students. "Ali must go"

Bullet proof vehicle will not save them, they layed with dog, they can not now try to run away from flies. All of them who sold their souls to Obasanjo, are what Ndi Igbo calls Oke rie onwu a. They took Obasanjo's poison now they are looking for a doctor that will cure them, is too late.

Bullet-Proof Car for Achike Udenwa and Wife
quote:
Assembly Approves Bullet Proof Cars for Udenwa, Wife
Imo
From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri

---------------------------------------

Disturbed by the spate of political killings in the country, the Imo State House of Assembly has approved bullet-proof cars for the governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, his wife and children.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the House minority leader, Mr Ugochukwu Nzekwe on Tuesday.

He had argued that the state should not wait until the governor was murdered before getting the cars for the family.

The motion was later put to vote by the Speaker, Kelechi Nwagwu with 12 members of the House voting in favour of the motion against two votes.

"We can't wait until our governor, his wife or children were murdered before we act, the time to act is now," the speaker said.

Meanwhile, the House has lifted the suspension clamped on the member representing Onuiruo State Constituency, Hon. Damian Ogu.

Who cares to kill Achike Udenwa or his wife?

As usual, i think you got your facts upside down. Chief Obafemi Awolowo lost his first son..Olusegun Awolowo to a freak car accident. The guy's car was run over by a timber-hauler 16-wheeler, being driven at the time by one Late Ayinla Omowura who later became a popular Yoruba Apala musician. The accident was politically motivated to dampen his doggedness. We are all witnesses to the fact that rather than dampen his spirit, he strode on to effectively become the "issue in Nigerian Politics" bestriding the political horizon like a colossus. A feat which Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu has consistently failed to achieve, despite his Biafran bravado and "Oxford-educated" appelation.
