Now that we know that Abacha wanted to practice democracy on Obasanjo until he was stopped by Museveni of Uganda and Mugabe of Zimbabwe, we should demand an apology from those two Eastern and Southern Africans. We could have been spared years of this Yoruba warlord if Abacha had been left to carry out his democracy project.
quote:
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni says the late Sani Abacha had concluded plans to hang President Olusegun Obasanjo for his alleged role in the 1995 phantom coup but for the intervention of himself and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The decision to plead with the hard man not to execute Obasanjo, who was then in prison, was taken at the summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMSA) (then called Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern Africa) in 1994, according to Museveni. He revisited the issue last week while addressing the ninth COMESA summit in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. A report published in last Wednesday’s edition of The Herald, based in Harare, said Museveni recalled that the 1994 summit tasked him and Mugabe to go to Abuja and plead with Abacha not to send Obasanjo to the gallows.
