POLICE ATTACKED MASSOB WOMEN CONFAB
The Nigeria police force, Orumba North, Divisional Police Station Ajali in Anambra State attacked MASSOB Awka Zone I women wing, Zonal Conference. The incident occured on the 2nd of August, 2004, by 3.00 pm. According to an eye witness report, one Rev. Venerable R. C. Okeke who is in charge of St. Mary Anglican Church Ajali collaborated with the police to attack the innocent defendless women. It was gathered that MASSOB provincial Administrator for Ajali, Mr Ikemefuna Iyiegbu and his wife Mrs. Benedette who hosted the conference were seriously beaten up. other women sustained various injuries from the attack information which reached us showed that thrity two persons were arrested. whereas, fifteen persons were reported missing (not seen). Also, valuable documents were confisticated, Incuding the sum of four hundred and fifty thousand naira N450,000.00 missed with the bag it was kept in. Surprisingly, the three vehicles and two motorcycles were impounded. The arrested persons were later transfered from Ajali Police station to Amaobia Divisional police cell by 7-30pm on the fateful day. In a swift reaction to the police attack on the women, the National director on welfare matters, Chief Benjamin Ekwenugo Condemn in its totality the abnormal attitude of the policemen and Rev Venerable G. C. Okeke. Which he described as Barbaric and inhumane. Noting that membes of the St. Mary Anglican Church council were duely informed accordingly, of MASSOB Women Zonal conference. And a clearance was issued that effect. But regreted why the Rev. Venerable decided to behaved indifferent. Commenting further on the matter, The provincial Administrator, For Ajali Province, Mr. Ikemefuna Iyiegbu, who had recovered from his ordeal, said that every effort was made to release the detainees proved abortive. He said the Nigeria Police Amaobia demanded MASSOB to pay the sum of Fifty thousand naira N50,000.00 for the bail bond. Instead, of giving bribe the P. A. said MASSOB choosed to take legal action. It will be re-called that in a similar case, the Owerri magistrate Court and an Abuja High Court earlier this year 2004, restrain the Nigeria Police from harrassing MASSOB members, because the group is a non-violent movement. and warned the police from dragging MASSOB to their courts.
