President Olusegun Obasanjo recently exclaimed that a recent world bank document revealed that a whopping $170 billion dollars have been stolen from Nigeria since 1999.This really does not surprise any one who has been to Nigeria in these years.

All the efforts at recovery of the Abacha loot have been largely delayed because oyinbos know even more looting is currently taking place.
Tony Blair told the british parliament in 2002 that Africa was a scar on the conscience of the world. If these Oyinbos are sincere about helping us,they should publish and freeze all those suspicious bank accounts with questionable origin of funds in their countries. Needless to say that the frivolous confidentiality clause of British banks should not apply to serving government Officials from corrupt African countries.Especially the commonwealth countries where Britain is the supreme leader.

On the home front,we should insist on transparency in government. All monies accrueing the federal government should be published by the central bank.Which should be allowed to function independently. Also all funds allocated to the various ministeries ,states and local governments should be published and audited by both the accountant general of the federation and the states.A law making all levels of Government to publish the projects they are financing with the money they recieve should be articulated. In this way, the people of Nigeria can easily know where the looting is taking place.Again, the obnoxious immunity from prosecution clause should be stripped from any government official found to have corruptly looted the treasury. How can we wait until after their long tenure when it obvious they would leave with the next available plane after their handover?

The hipocrisy of the arguement that the western countries cannot trace these stolen funds have been deflated by the efficiency they have exhibited in tracking down terrorist bank accounts all over the world.Any body who harbours a terrorist is a terrorist as President Bush rightly said.In the same vien, any one who gives safe sanctuary to stolen funds from poor African countries is a criminal no matter how hard he might try to convince us of his handicap or protocol to freeze and repatraite that stolen money.
