Defeating Chief Obasanjo’s Schizophrenic leadership: A
good thing for Nigeria

Okechukwu E. Asia
ifyandokey@yahoo.com

Onye ulo ya na-agba oku, ya ana achu oke. (He, whose house is on fire, is busy hunting rats).

“Schizophrenia: - Any of the group of psychotic disorders, usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, or intellectual disturbances” – American Collegiate Dictionary.

I am one of the majorities of Nigerians who never accepted the result of the last presidential election that gave Obasanjo another four-year term. This group of Nigerians never recognized Obasanjo as the legitimate president, but any way reluctantly remained mute, hoping that may be, he will come to his senses and bend down to do the work that he was “selected” last April to do.

I am disappointed that Obasanjo has become the slave of the likes of Chris Uba, Nzeribe and Ude of all the people. He is now the “Oti ekwe” (Drummer boy) of Chris Uba. It’s a shame. Obasanjo has come down so low that whenever Chris Uba says jump, he will ask how high? I don’t blame Chris Uba or Obasanjo, but those who have a hand in bringing him out of his farmhouse – where he actually belonged and made him the president of a large and sophisticated country like Nigeria. I blame Babangida, Atiku, Umar and the rest of them. In other countries Obasanjo would have been sitting in jail by now.

For a president to behave in this stupid, sycophantic and schizophrenic ignorant way, one is forced to conclude that the president has put Nigeria on a course to national destruction. We must dissolve the Nigerian state and reconstitute it with only the willing tribes through a National Conference. Balkanization of Nigeria through the creation of so many states has made it almost impossible for citizens to connect with the consequences of events taking place in a state other than their own.

Again, I call for the dissolution of the Nigeria state now before something really bad befalls us. Such a new state must bear a new name, a new flag, a new national anthem, a new academic curriculum, and most of all, a new system of governance, which will take into account our diverse peoples and cultures and languages. A new state with a new outlook.

The task may seem impossible under Obasanjo’s administration because of his perceived attitude of “one-person malevolent dictatorship” and his disloyalty to the Nigerian state. Obasanjo happens to be the worst we have had so far. But he is only one person. We must not allow him to dictate the course to which we want to take our country but take action to change our country for the better.

I cannot help but mention Alhaji Abubakar Umar’s letter to Obasanjo. In Umar we find courage and hope to stand up to Obasanjo’s dictatorial tendencies and stop the scourge he and his cronies are imposing on our culture. Should he resist or stand in the way, we must forcefully remove him and put him on trial to suffer. As Umar rightfully wrote, “sooner or later God will disown the president” Therefore I call on Nigerians everywhere to revolt and take charge of their destiny. This time it must not be bloodless. We are tired of recycling the same people in government. Since the old brigades have refused to leave the stage, we must force them out with consequences.

Abubakar Umar further wrote in his well-structured letter entitled “The Devil is it, Mr. President” that “while dubious cronies and sycophants are making a killing, honest hardworking Nigerians are being frustrated out of business”, and also out of the country. Our children are born and raised in foreign lands, which is threatening our very existence as a people. Umar also accused Obasanjo of running a “deluded leadership that is set on the course of National destruction”.

Assuming that Umar is right in his assertion of the Obasanjo’s leadership, what are we going to do? Do we let Obasanjo lead us to destruction or do we stop him by all means necessary to save our country, our future, our culture and most of all our children. We must stop at nothing to reclaim our country from the hands of Obasanjo and his cronies. This is a task every Nigerian must be prepared to carry out. It is our hope, our future and our lives. We must stop him.

Had I not known some nice and fine Yoruba people, I would have concluded that the likes of Obasanjo is all that the Yorubas can present to Nigeria, which has turned out to be a failure and an embarrassment to Nigerians. And their commitment to Nigeria’s existence is now a serious question. The failed obasanjo experiment has left one to wonder whether the Yorubas are capable of governing Nigeria. In Obasanjo we have found that they are not; we have discovered their conspiracy to destroy Nigeria; we have seen their dictatorial tendencies; and we have found that Nigerians cannot trust our destiny in any Yoruba man again in any disguise; be it a farmer from Otta or a banker at Tinubu Square.

I am amused to read the embarrassing and unprofessional response by Obasanjo to Abubakar Umar’s letter. His response made Umar more credible. Instead of responding to the contents of Umar’s letter, he and his cronies went on a personal attack confirming the contents of Umar’s letter. By the way, what Umar wrote in his famous letter are the things Nigerians already known. He only brought them into the limelight. This is the debate the presidency can never win. They should shut-up and listen to Nigerians. Millions of Nigerians are feeling the same way as Umar, but remained silent.

In his response to Umar’ letter, the president said, “there should be a distinction between constructive criticism and lies”. One is forced to re-examine Umar’s letter to find the lies. Is it a lie that the roads in Niger Republic are better than Nigerian roads? Is it also a lie that Niger Republic enjoys uninterrupted power supply? To verify, just drive across the border and you will weep for Nigeria. Is it a lie that Obasanjo and his cronies are engaged in a “deluded leadership on the course of National destruction”? Just go to Anambra State and Odi in Bayelsa State and see things for yourself. Take a look at the people he hangs out with – Chris Uba, Nzeribe, Ude, Omisore, Fani-Kayode and the likes.

Look at his endless violation of the Nigerian constitution and his disrespect of the law. Check out the chronic corruption embedded in the presidency. I watch with pity seeing millions of Nigerians eating from the trash. I watch them drink from the streams animals wash themselves. I have seen them kicked, maimed and shot by Obasanjo’s police. Is it a lie that more than 70% of Nigerians are unemployed? If you are in Nigeria now just look around and you will see them. Is it a lie that our hospitals are turning into mortuaries? Just visit any hospital in Nigeria and you will weep. Is it a lie that our school system is in shambles? Check out how many months of the year the schools are open without a strike. It took my brother 10 years to graduate from a law school which otherwise would have taken just 5 years.

Where are the lies in Umar’s letter? I have read the letter more than twenty times looking for the lies. I could not find any. And I am sure that it is not a lie that Obasanjo believes that the Lord anointed him to be president, and the Lord “selected” him again last April. He goes around talking about the Lord and taking the Lord’s name in vain. I agree with Umar that the president should “seek the proper understanding of the Lord and not only purge himself of pagan beliefs but also delusional tendencies” and stop taking the Lord’s name in vain.

The president in response to Umar’s letter further said “Umar and his small group will never smell power again in Nigeria”. This statement called into question Mr. president’s state of mind and confirms his arrogance. Is the president the one that gives power to people in Nigeria or the people of Nigeria chooses their leaders? The constitution clearly stated that people of Nigeria elects its leaders every four years. It did not say that the president selects our leaders. By this statement Obasanjo is again making mockery of our democracy, which further confirms Umar’s assertion that he is running a “ deluded leadership on the course of National destruction”. I asked my fellow Nigerians, why not rise up and challenge this dangerous scourge on our culture.

I am aware of the cowardice in every Nigerian. We must not continue to stand by and watch our house razed down by fire while our children and loved ones are trapped inside. If we did not do something the house will burn down and our children and loved ones will perish in the smoke and heat. Or do we try and take a risk and go and rescue them? Do we allow them to die in the fire? And let loose the arsonist and his cronies to go free and not be accountable.

Nigerians, please wake up. Our house is on fire. Our children and loved ones are trapped inside. We must rescue them. The arsonist and his cronies are looking at us in the face. Are you a coward? Are you afraid? Do you not care?

In Poland, in Georgia Republic, in the early France and America, when their governments became destructive and dictatorial and a threat to their well-being, they turned to each other, organized themselves and took control of their governments and put it back on course to national development.

My fellow Nigerians, the situation in our country today has called on us to organize ourselves and take control of our government and our destiny. We must not chicken out this time.
