Folks
Citizens are begining to speak the truth and their minds about the disasterous government of Obasanjo. Those in this forum who continue to praise Obasanjo inspite of his huge failure because he is a yorubaman, should hear what right thinking people are saying.
It is only in NIgeria a government like OBJ'S government will be allowed to remain in power one day longer than necessary.Todays ruling by the kangaroo court in Abuja regard last rigged election shows that nigeria is a big joke.

SOYINKA, OTHERS TO BABA IYABO: ABACHA 'S WAS BETTER.

Shehu Abubakar
Benin City

The 39-month-old democracy in Nigeria has once again been brought under critical examination, this time by seasoned administrators, scholars, politicians, professionals, activists and a cross-section of notable Nigerians, most of whom are believed to be either sympathetic to the Obasanjo administration or person who except recently have not seen anything wrong in the Nigerian democracy.

The forum, which was a two-day international conference organised by the Edo government in collaboration with Ford Foundation of the United States of America and the National Integration Group

(NIG) Nigeria; brought together important dignitaries like the former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar; Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka who delivered the special lecture, Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, Governor Mohammed Makarfi of Kaduna, James Onanafe Ibori of Delta and Lucky Igbinedion of Edo states. Professor Wole Soyinka who has never been heard criticising the Obasanjo administration was to the admiration of his listeners expressing his disappointment at the way Nigeria is being governed under Obasanjo and even admitted that some of the threats of impeachment by the legislative arm were actually genuine. Of Obasanjo's three years of democratic rule in Nigeria, Professor Wole Soyinka had this to say: "However, during our three-year return to civil rule, I suggest that we are not yet at the stage of the heard, and that I am afraid, is the end of the good news," he said, adding that, "what we have instead is a strange kind of articulated trucks with engines not really at both ends, but even at the sides. The end of such contraction with the engines pulling in four directions, all from the four points of a compass. I think it's predictable and is indeed becoming bolder, the ditch into which the vehicle would plunge with such effect that it would make even a panel-beater beat a hasty retreat knowing that there is nothing for him to salvage."

The Nobel Laureate who is noted for his unreserved criticism of the late General Abacha had this to say when comparing the late Abacha's military rule and Obasanjo's civilian administration in Nigeria. "Indeed I should go further and propose that the political scenario under Abacha was even more tolerable than at present. Then we had just one monstrosity to deal with. Our task was to decapitate that monster and the limbs would wither and die. Today we are confronted with the hydra-headed monster whose limbs have developed independent existences of their own and established roots and tentacles in excess of the national polity and can only be eradicated through strenuous excavations, weed killers or hopefully, as it happened to their leaders and mentors, through the intervention of nature."

The professor who seemed to have been speaking the minds of his listeners was at this stage given a standing ovation crowned with an applause that convinced every person around that Nigerians, even if not all, at least a good number of them, are lamenting having this type of democratic government in power.

Professor Soyinka did not only descend on the president alone but on his collaborators as well when he said, "I am speaking bluntly that it is time we went ahead and published the curriculum vitae and photographs of whoever they are, from technocrats, professionals, business tycoons and the so-called traditional rulers who have desecrated their revered thrones and become grovelling sycophants to a homicidal upstart while their subjects were being ground in dust. These people must be made to explain and justify their actions to the people whose respect they demand as of right."

On the agitation for a second term by political office-holders whom he noted have performed far bellow expectations, the professor said that was not the best for this country as the populace would like to have new people with the hope that they may be better.

He blamed the constitution for being fashioned in a manner that virtually hands over power to the incumbency adding. "Three, four years have passed under this self-declared democratic government. By now a new constitution should have passed the concluding stage of plebiscite."

In his contribution, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who handed over power to Chief Obasanjo condemned the government for non-performance, adding "many who believe in the eventual stablisation of our polity under civil democracy are beginning to have their faith shaken. Doomsayers are already sounding the death knell of this latest attempt at democratic government in our nation," Abdulsalami said adding that "at this point in time, there is great cause for fear, I must confess. Even though I have even greater, though apprehensive confidence for the future of our democracy."

The Senate president, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim who is the number three man in the Obasanjo government said he has no confidence in the administration because according to him, the government has no respect for human values.

He blamed the executive for refusing to allow the rule of law and the practice of democracy in the country and charged members of the public to hold the executive responsible for thwarting democracy in the country.

The state publicity secretary of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), Mr Godwin Erhahon said "the state government organised the conference and invited people thought they it would come and praise-sing Obasanjo's government. Every Nigerian is tired of this PDP administration. If Abdulsalami, Soyinka, Anyim and other notable Nigerians who spoke at the conference who are known to be friendly with this government could be blunt to tell Obasanjo that his government is not democratic and that they have lost confidence in it, he had better returned honourably to Ota farm and continue his piggery. I am sure the Edo State government is regretting organizing this conference."

The special adviser to Governor Igbinedion on information and orientation, Mr Sonny Irabor could not deny that the state government did not expect such critical comments on the Obasanjo-led government by the speakers, he however said "what they really said were the facts on the ground and the state government has no regret organizing the conference."

He said the criticisms would help government adjust where necessary.

Spit their names out brother I know of a couple. bolaji aluko and Kunle.

I've always from day one known that abacha's mis-governance was much better than this yoroba thief called aremu obasanjo's. I relocated and lived in nigeria through abacha's death on top a good looking Indian whore. I was against obasanjo's emergence then and still am. The twisted reason given for the support for this thief was that anybody but the military which I never bought.

I'm I reading this correctly? When did this forum/international forum take place? Nigeria's democracy is not 39 months old.

This is not new stuff. It's the same old rubbish.

The time of writting is not the issue, but is this fact true of the present situation in nigeria? American's quote their past leaders from day of independence 1776 till date.

These great American's use their leaders past address and statements to correct and improve their country. They do remember, unlike nigeria where emptyness abound in every aspect of life because nigerian's quick to forget. Soyinka's address is not an old rubbish, but the current rubbish going on in nigeria under the watch of Obasanjo.

I'm not sure how sincere this question is albeit, it is an open book how abacha died while screwing imported hooker from India. He went into coma the moment he sucked her cyanide laced nipples. Could that be dying in style?
