OBJ's likely successor in Bellview crash

A political strategy that was unlike any other in Nigeria’s political history that would have propped up a dark horse presidential candidate for the 2007 elections collapsed with the crash of the Bellview plane in Lisa Village, Ogun State. Informed administration sources told Sunday Tribune that some top chieftains of Corporate Nigeria, a coalition of private sector giants, had convinced the president that if he would not run for third term, their candidate for the presidency should be late Mohammed Waziri, the Board Chairman, Nigeria Railway Corporation and member, PDP Board of Trustees, with Gov Donald Duke as his running mate.

Sunday Tribune learnt that not only had the president accepted the idea but had forged ahead with implementation, leading to the president’s more than ten visitations to Cross-River since he assumed office in 1999. While Corporate Nigeria was reported to be actively bankrolling Waziri’s ambition, the late Waziri was said to have supported the chance of Duke over another South-South governor because of two reasons, namely their childhood friendship and Duke’s innovation in the governance of the state.

Reports showed that the late Waziri was preferred above both the Bauchi State governor, Adamu Muazu, and Alhaji Kashim Imam, a former presidential adviser, due to his documented achievements in the private sector and the president’s acceptance of Waziri as a new face in Nigerian politics. A top source at the PDP Secretariat put it this way: “we called Waziri chairman, He was obviously the annointed from 2003 until the crash, he replaced Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in critical state functions.” “He was the only board chairman who was never removed since 1999. He combined several other state functions. He was almost stepping into the shoes”, a source said.

Sunday Tribune investigations showed that a follow-up meeting was to be held in Abuja two days before the air crash that took the life of Waziri. The Abuja meeting, Sunday Tribune learnt, was to involve some state governors while the forum would have provided a platform for the president to give a hint of his preferred successor. Unconfirmed reports even suggested that a Corporate Nigeria chieftain made available a whopping sum of $2 million for Waziri, an amount believed to have been lost in the Lisa crash. While no official reasons have been given, Sunday Tribune was told that the amount accompanied Alhaji Mohammed on the ill-fated flight even as some security operatives gave him cover to the airport. Some residents of Lisa village allegedly looted the thousands of dollars at the crash site.

It was learnt that the arrest of the Baale of Lisa was linked with the missing dollars as operatives suspected that the period between the crash and the time it was reported to the AIT had been used by the villagers to loot the site. Sunday Tribune sources also indicated that President Obasanjo had grown so fond of Waziri that he was not only his regular Squash partner but also one of the very few young Nigerian politicians, like Donald Duke, Samaila Sambawa who can walk into his bedroom.

Waziri, was thought to be at the head of Obasanjo’s third term agenda meetings which were severally held in his house, with Governor Olusegun Agagu, Jerry Gana and some core Obasanjo loyalists in attendance. But these meetings, which were stridently denied by the Presidency, were actually the groundwork for Waziri’s presidential campaign. Waziri, a Board of Trustees member of the PDP and Board chairman of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, who was from Maiduguri, Borno State, actually fitted the agenda of the PDP which has zoned the presidency to the North-East.

For the record, I have not done political work in Nigeria since I came out here in 99. I did not ask anybody in the Kalu group for anything other than news. When Kaluu claimed he had documents on OBJ I begged, Sowore begged for him to give it to us. At the end of the day we discovered the guy was being his old self. I stopped calling him but will try to call him today to find out where that story is coming from.

The South-South has started a credible process of elimination. When concluded, one popularly accepted candidate will emerge. The South West is not unmindful of the claims of other groups having had its turn. It is however looking for a friendly Southern candidate to support. Obasnajo’s much talked about schemes to earn a third term does not seem to be going down well with a lot of people. What this means to the Igbo man is an invitation to make a concerted well coordinated effort which should advance them closer to the zone of relevance. But if care is not taken, their candidates can burn themselves out before the real contest starts. If they should dissipate their energy in the familiar Igbo in-fighting, they will have themselves to blame.

Uzor Kalu has made his move a long time ago but may not have aroused enough Igbo backing. The average Igboman’s misguided addiction to the PDP which party he believes is the only party with which ticket a politician can win an election by fair or foul means has not enabled him to look in Kalu’s direction. And because there are many Igbo PDP card holders Kalu’s apparent call for a break with the myth in the PDP constitutes his greatest set back. With the present frosty relationship now prevailing between him and Obasanjo whose influence in the party is still very intimidating, Kalu has a duty to himself to either stay in the PDP even if grudgingly, or soften his stance against Obasanjo, or walk away to a new party. Neither option is easy.

To the above may be added the Rochas Okorocha factor whose signals are still unclear but unfolding. The way he is pointing does not lead to anything outside Aso Rock. Anything else will not do. With Orji Uzor Kalu already on the move, Igbo interests should be expected typically to crash into each other and disintegrate. The Ohaneze seems to be watching in silence perhaps laughing too, not wishing to hurt anybody but hoping that good sense will eventually prevail. That is not a dynamic approach. The time for Igbo leaders to invite interested Igbo aspirants to declare their ambition is exactly now. Each must however be prepared to give the undertaking that, in the event that he is not the preferred Igbo flag bearer, he will respect any decision taken by it and support the preferred candidate. The present Ohaneze silence is not helping matters. When the traditional hard tackling, dirty Igbo politics gets going, with many candidates in the ring shadow boxing, the Ohaneze may regret not nipping the catastrophe in the bud before the usual damage is done to a good cause. – Mazi Harry Nwana of Ndi onyeche Izogu
