To God i hope this information is not true. But then again why can't it be true? This is a leaked copy of the information contained in a letter written to OBJ through the minister of finance by the world bank.
If this is true, (and it has not been proven otherwise yet), then one wonders what Obasanjo is doing fighting the likes of Alameyeisegha when the real public looters are parading the cities of Nigeria and the corridors of power, while others are ernestly looking forward to 2007 to continue from where they stopped.

FROM LAOLU AKANDE NEW YORK NORTH AMERICA BUREAU CHIEF
quote: A list containing the names of 21 former Nigerian officials and military officers with alleged sums of looted money in foreign banks have been disowned by officials of the World Bank in Washington D.C.
For about a month now, the list which mentions the amount of money the Nigerians have allegedly stashed away in several currencies - including US dollars, British pounds, German (Deutsche) Marks and Swiss Franc - have circulated in diplomatic circles, among international financial operatives and several email lists on the internet.
The World Bank is listed as the source, sometimes with reference to the London Financial Times' report of June 24, 1999.
Earlier this year, Obasanjo was reported, (at the time Nigeria was inching close to a deal with its creditors on the debt relief) as saying that he had been asked about Nigerian funds stashed abroad by former officials and had given such a list.
There was no official denial of this from the Nigerian government.
However, when The Guardian spoke with several officials of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) in the last few weeks, the officials' reaction had been one of straight denial of the list.
John Donaldson, a senior communication officer at the World Bank said the establishment is not a policing institution, and if it has any information it would pass it to the appropriate authorities. His colleague Herbert Boh disassociated the World Bank from such a list.
"The World Bank is not in possession of any such list and did not send any such list out to President Obasanjo or to any media outlet," he said.
But he conceded that the World Bank has received "numerous other requests on this list," but categorically denied that such a list is from the World Bank and "is NOT connected to the World Bank." (emphasis his)
Speaking with the International Finance Corporation, which is the World Bank agency that deals with the private sector, Corrie Shanahan, IFC's spokesperson, also stated that the the IFC does not maintain such a list.
But Shanahan, however, added that "as part of our due diligence with regard to anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML-CFT), we subscribe to a number of commercial list services," suggestting that the IFC may indeed have access to such information as contained in the list.
Shanahan also noted that basically such information contained in the list were bank secrets.
The cover-up begins!

What if its not a "cover-up" as you say Igboblood? There is still something such as an "urban myth" you know?
How did such a list come to be in public circulation? it a bit difficult to swallow this kind of information hookline&sinker...I'd be weary of this "list" and ask more questions....

A myth? Possible but unlikely.

What questions would you ask? We have known for years that money was being diverted from the country by its leaders. All that is required is for one to look at the level of development + juxtapose that with the amount realised from oil sales. Thus, given the names on that (incomplete) list, I don't have any doubt in my mind that those blokes looted public funds. Do you?
Postscript
Oh yeah, I hope the ache in your tooth is gone. Ndoo.

There's no doubt that those guys stole money, i dare say even more than that list claims, and yes even more so that list is so incomplete...but i just find the appearance of such a list at this time, somewhat strange, and if one looks at that list closely it appears to be targeted at a certain political clique, the said "babaginda boys" (of cos I'm not totally sure about who belongs to this clique and only go by "hear say", so this can be disproved I'm sure)...I just dont want to help anybody's political propaganda..(a na ro ma zi these days)...anyway, i'd adopt a "wait and see" approach, hopefully more information will come forth soon..
A.
p.s. My tooth is "just there", thanks for asking. they'll operate on tuesday, hopefully that should fix the problem (a leak in my root canal) as well as allow me keep the tooth. American prescriped "pain relivers" are very "narcotic" based, which has a hallucinatory & skin "itch" effect on some (me)...its the devil and blue sea suituation for me...dam if i do, dam if i dont....I wait and long for Tuesday...(Yeap, you asked how my tooth was doing, & you got the gory details....lol)

I don’t think it was targeted at the ‘Babangida boys’ per se as the list contains names like Mustapha + Useni who are known ‘Abacha boys’. That however is not really the issue. The point remains that as long as some names have been exposed, we should be delighted that a start has been made. Remember, this has never happened before. Whether the list is politically motivated or not, what remains pleasing is that these people deserved to be exposed + confusion has been thrown into the camps of those that have held that sorry country to ransom for decades. The truth (however sketchy or politically motivated) is being revealed + for that reason alone, I am happy.

Well, not in the real sense. Abacha was more Babangida’s ‘equal’ than his subordinate. For instance, I believe they were both of the rank of Major General (or close enough) when they plotted + carried out the overthrow of the Buhari regime. Also, remember that when Abacha took over he retired all officers loyal to IBB.
