30 Govs Endorse 3rd Term
Houses of Assembly to ratify amendments same day, same time
By Bolaji Adebiyi, 12.24.2005

The speculated third term bid of President Olusegun Obasanjo may have received a boost with 30 of the 36 state governors signing to support a constitutional amendment that will allow the President and state governors to serve three terms of four years each.
By sections 137 (b) and 182 (b) of the 1999 Constitution, the Presi-dent and the governor of a state are eligible for election into office for only two terms of four years each. Only legislators do not have a constitutional barrier to the number of tenure they could serve.
These two sections are what the 30 governors have agreed to amend to pave the way for the President’s quest for another term of four years.
As part of the agreement at series of meetings, the governors agreed to deliver the support of their representatives in the National Assembly for the project. They also pledged to deliver their Houses of Asse-mbly for the project that had drawn massive opposition from a cynical public, which believed that the Obasanjo administration’s policies had brought more pains than joy to the generality of the people.
According to THISDAY information, the governors that are queuing behind the extra term project are Obong Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom), Do-nald Duke (Cross River), Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers), Chief James Ibori (Delta), Chief Lucky Igbin-edion (Edo), Chief Achike Udenwa (Imo), Dr. Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Senator Rashidi Ladoja (Oyo), Prince Olagu-nsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Dr. Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Dr. Olusegun Agagu (Ondo), Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Alhaji Ahmed Kure (Niger), Alhaji Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Alhaji Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto), Alhaji Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Alhaji Adamu Mu`azu (Bauchi), Chief Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Chief George Akume (Benue), Alhaji Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Dr. Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Rev. Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Senator Modu Sheriff (Borno), Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe), Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa), Alhaji Yar`Adua (Katsina) and Dr. Jonathan Goodluck (Bayelsa).
Six of their colleagues, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (Lagos), Dr. Chris Ngige (Ananmbra), Chief Orji Kalu (Abia), Mr. Boni Haruna (Adamawa), Alhaji Shekarau (Kano) and Alhaji Ahmed Sani (Zamfara), are, however, opposed to the move.
For the opposing governors, the move to ratify an extra term for the executive arm of government is an immoral act that threatens to undermine the nation’s quest for the strengthening of its democratic culture and institutions.
Also opposing the proposal according to THISDAY information are many members of the National Assembly, especially senators, some of who will have their governorship amb-itions eclipsed by the constitutional amen-dment that will permit sitting governors to have another shot at the coveted seats at the states.
But the pro-third term governors would not be deterred by their dissenting colleagues reservations as they set up committees to facilitate the passage of the constitutional amendment, which is planed to be passed by the 36 state Houses of Assembly simultaneously on the same day and at the same time.
The simultaneous passage of the amendment, THISDAY gathered, will whittle down the effect of the opposition from the North, some of which governors had vehemently opposed the third term project.
It is, however, not clear if the National Assembly will also sit to ratify the amendment on the same day with the state Houses of Assembly.
According to THISDAY information, three main committees have been constituted to facilitate the actualisation of the project. They are the Contact Committee, headed by Governor Adamu Mu’azu of Bauchi State, Finance Committee, led by Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State and the Central Planning Committee with Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers) and Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi (Nas-arawa) as the lichpins.
It was gathered that following the series of meetings and contacts including a sub-meeting in Enugu, the number of state chief executives that have so far lined up behind the bid number 30.
The major source of funding, as gathered by THISDAY, is corporate Nigeria expected to be anchored by the Managing Director of Nigeria Brewery Plc., Chief Festus Odim-egwu. Also, a leading bank in the country is expected to provide logistics for the project. In addition to funds to be provided by corporate Nigeria and the leading bank, there is information that money is being “extorted” from corporate organisations and individuals to swell the war chest of the project.
As part of the efforts to actualise the project, compromises and realignments of political forces had to be done. For instance, governors who on account of their support for Vice President Atiku Abub-akar, and their opposition to the project had been harassed by the Federal Gover-nment’s anti crime and corruption agencies, would be left off the hook.
In this group is Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State and Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State. Dariye who has been hounded by the Econ-omic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and is being investigated by the state House of Assembly for indictment fueled by the EFCC, may regain his rest of mind as the commission has been reportedly asked to remove the noose around the governor’s neck.
Also to benefit from the wisdom in supporting the extra term project, is Ladoja who has been having a hard time with his political godfather, Chief Lamidi Adedibu. Only on Thursday, for five hours there was a gun battle between his and the godfather’s supporters in Ibadan in a bid by 18 pro-Adedibu lawmakers to consumate the impea-chment process against him. With his new-found support for the extra term project, Ladoja is to enjoy a reprieve as the Federal Government, is by a special pact with the governor, to withdraw its subsidies to the opposition group that have been terrorising him and have made his state ungovernable.
THISDAY information also shows that Vice President Atiku may end the major loser in the power game and calculus as Governors Mu’azu and Ahmed Markarfi of Kaduna State, and Deputy Senate President Ibra-him Mantu have been penciled down as his successor.
The third term agenda has been in the public domain in the past few months with many public policy analysts and social critics opposing it as an unfortunate symptom of the African leadership malaise of sitting tight in office.
Individuals who have spoken publicly against the bid include Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, the stormy petrel of Lagos Bar, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses, John Onay-eikan. Others are the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the 2003 general election, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Bu-hari and the Speaker of the House of Represen-tatives, Alhaji Aminu Masari.
Also on the queue against the extra term bid are such political organisations as the Arewa Cons-ultative Forum (ACF), Afenifere, Move-ment for Development of Democracy (MDD) and Movement for the Restor-ation of Democracy (MRD). © Copyright 2000-2005 Leaders & Company Limited

Fear of EFCC? Why 30 Govs Want 3rd Term
By Yusuph Olaniyonu, 12.25.2005

Personal gain, political survival, intrigues and fear of the Economic and Financial Crimes Comm-ission (EFCC) are some of the factors which inspired last week’s decision of 30 of the nation’s 36 governors to support the plan to elongate the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo with a third term.
THISDAY checks reveal that several of the governors believe that supporting a third term “is a win-win situation” in which they would also benefit from a constitutional amendment like the President.
Hence, some of them have dropped their initial opposition for the third term agenda. Yet some others are believed to have plugged into the agenda for the fear of being under the searchlight of the EFCC. In their calculation, by the end of a third term the tenure of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as Chairman of EFCC must have expired. Ribadu is feared by some of the governors as being inflexible in his bid to prosecute them for alleged corruption.
This plan is to be achieved through constitutional amen-dment passed simultaneously by State Houses of Assembly early next year.
Top sources close to the series of secret meetings held by the 30 governors told THISDAY that while a few governors are supporting the agenda because of the promise that they will replace Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the post-2007 Obasanjo government, some others believe that they could use the agenda to negotiate a respite from the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFFC) which has compiled incriminating evidence against them.
Informed sources also explained that some Northern governors are merely playing along in the third term game so as to be immune from the wrath of Aso Rock in the meantime. Governors in this category believe that the third term agenda would fail eventually in the face of the rising opposition to the idea, in which event they would not be blame and they would have impressed the President that they did their best.
A fourth group of governors who were elected for the first time in 2003 are said to have enlisted in support of the third term because they were assured of automatic re-election ticket by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while they were further reasured that the party would still sweep the polls at the 2007 elections.
THISDAY gathered that a fifth group of governors are those who have problems within their party and states and are facing threats to their hold in power.
"For those group of governors which included Oyo state governor, Rashidi Ladoja, Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom), Joshua Dariye (Plateau) and Ayo Fayose (Ekiti) who all have internal crises in their states, they believe that being in the good books of Aso Rock can sweep the rugs off the feet of their adversaries," the source said.
Ladoja is facing impeachment threat from a group of 18 legislators supported by his enstranged godfather, Lamidi Adedibu while many key members of the Ekiti State political elites are still opposed to Governor Fayose. Also, Ambassador Sam Edem, chairman of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is believed to have seized the PDP machinery from Attah in Akwa Ibom state. Dariye's problem is the battle of supremacy between him and deputy senate president, Ibrahim Mantu who is also scheming to become the Vice-President if Obasanjo's third term ambition works.
Dariye is however mentioned as a member of the group of governors who endorsed the Third term agenda to halt the gradual move against him and his aides by the EFCC. Some of Dariye's aides and staff of a bank, All States Trust Bank are standing trial in a Kaduna High Court on charges of corruption in which the governor is a principal actor. The governor also has pending charges of money laundering in London where the Metropolitan Police had concluded investigation on his various illegal transactions in Britain.
Other governors alleged to be using the third term project to gain respite from the EFCC are Governors Lucky Igbinedion (Edo), James Ibori (Delta), and Jolly Nyame (Taraba).
Governors Gbenga Daniel (Osun), Olusegun Agagu (Ondo), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Idris Ibrahim (Kogi), Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Jonathan Goodluck (Bayelsa) and Modu Ali Sheriff (Borno) are said to be those who though still running their first term in office are supporting the project to gain automatic re-election.
Goodluck is believed to be using the third term project to further pay back Aso Rock for the support he got in the battle to remove his predecessor, Diepreye Alamieye-seigha. Governors Jolly Nyame and Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Taraba and Yobe states respectively may secure a fourth term in office if the Obasanjo 3rd term agenda works out. The two men had been elected as governors in 1991, 1999 and 2003, though they spent 23 months in office between 1991 - 1993.
Sources however confirmed that the constitutional amendment which may give President Obasanjo a third term in office is expected to retain Section 308 of the present constitution which guarantees the president, governors and their deputies immunity from arrest and trial for any criminal and civil proceedings in any Nigerian court.
"Retaining the immunity clause is a trade-off for the governors' support for the 3rd term project. So, there is something in the agenda for all the key players," a source said.
THISDAY had yesterday exclusively reported that 30 governors have agreed to back the proposed amendment of Sections 137(b) and 182(b) of the 1999 constitution which limits the maximum tenure of office of a President and governors to only two terms of four year each.
Only Governors Orji Kalu (Abia), Bola Tinubu (Lagos), Chris Ngige (Anambra), Boni Haruna (Adamawa), Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto) (Zamfara) and Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) refrain from endorsing the third term project.
As part of the agreement at series of meetings, the pro-third term governors resolved to deliver the support of their representatives in the National Assembly for the project.
But the pro-third term governors are to facilitate the passage of the constitutional amendment, which is planned to be passed by the 36 state Houses of Assembly simultaneously on the same day and at the same time.
The proposed simultaneous passage of the amendment, THISDAY gathered is intended to whittle down the effect of the opposition from the North.
It is, however, not clear if the National Assembly will also sit to ratify the amendment on the same day with the state Houses of Assembly.
THISDAY gathered, that three main committees have been constituted to facilitate the actualisation of the project. They are the Contact Committee, headed by Governor Adamu Mu’azu of Bauchi State, Finance Committee, led by Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State and the Central Planning Committee with Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers) and Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi (Nassa-rawa) as the linchpins.
It was gathered that following the series of meetings and contacts including a sub-committee meeting in Enugu, the number of state chief executives that have so far lined up behind the bid is 30.
The major source of funding, as gathered by THISDAY, is Corporate Nigeria expected to be anchored by the Managing Director of Nigeria Brewery Plc., Chief Festus Odimegwu. Also, the funds are to be channelled through a leading bank in the country which is expected to provide logistics for the project. It has also been alleged that money is being “extorted” from corporate organisations and individuals to swell the war chest of the project.

30 Men Who Want to Subvert Our Constitution for Personal Political Gain and Fear of EFCC
12.24.2005

Yesterday, THISDAY exclusively reported that 30 of the nation’s 36 state governors have secretly endorsed the move to amend the constitution and create opportunity for themselves and President Olusegun Obasanjo to run for another term. In this analysis, Tunde Rahman and Oma Djebah explain why each of the governors signed in the 3rd term project

Gbenga Daniel
Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, President Obasanjo's home state, is the real homeboy. But besides this, the governor also knows that an automatic second term that is assured under the third term deal will help eliminate his fears about 2007 given the strident challenge mounted by Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the Alliance for Democracy (AD)'s Otunba Dipo Dina among others against his re-election.
Because of the challenge from these people, for sometime now, other matters had taken a back seat in the state, no thanks to the deft scheming and other activities geared towards getting a second term for Daniel. For these reasons, Daniel had eagerly indicated his full support for the President’s third term project and expects the president to also back him for 2007.

Rashidi Ladoja
Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State is fighting the battle of his life with his erstwhile godfather, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, and support for Obasanjo's third term may help him fend off the ongoing impeachment move as well as achieve re-election in 2007, something that seems difficult if not impossible with the present configuration in the state.
Ladoja who was previously an ally of Vice President Atiku Abubakar had to quickly jump ship to survive politically. And backing the third term deal is a step in that direction.

Ayo Fayose
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, is also an homeboy and an ally of the President. Fayose would do anything to ensure that Obasanjo's third term succeeds knowing fully well that, that will be help him cage the growing opposition ready to wrestle the governorship seat from him in 2007.

James Ibori
Perhaps of the trio of Igbinedion, Attah and James Ibori, the Delta State governor seems to be the closest to Atiku. Ibori stuck out his neck in 2003 for Atiku leading the pack of those that told President Obasanjo they would not support him to get the party’s presidential ticket. But Ibori has embraced third term and joined the bandwagon because he is said to be suffering from battle fatigue fighting the president whose dogs of war including the EFCC may be after him. And he seems now to be listening to counsel that he has to find a way of working with Obasanjo.

Peter Odili
Odili has been a close ally of President Obasanjo since he was elected governor of Rivers State in 1999. Some believe the association had provided cover for the Rivers State governor and ensure that even when he does the same thing that other governors suffer for, he remains protected. It is therefore not surprising that he was one of the two key coordinators of the third term project. It is believed that Odili hopes that any arrangement that will bring power to the South-south after Obasanjo will see him as the greatest beneficiary.

Goodluck Jonathan
For the newly inaugurated Bayelsa State Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the third term project is a pay back time for a President who helped him take over from his former boss, DSP Alamieyeseigha who was last month impeached. Which is why Jonathan has embraced the plan unabashedly. Besides, with Timi Alaibe, Executive Director of Finance NDDC, on his heels, he can be sure of securing a second term if he backs the third term project.

Olagunsoye Oyinlola
For Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the assurance of an automatic second term under the Obasanjo Third Term Project cannot but be alluring. This is because the automatic second term will whittle down the growing opposition to his re-election from embattled Senator Iyiola Omisore and AD's Engineer Rauf Aregbesola of the Oranmiyan fame.
Again, coming from the same military constituency with President Obasanjo, the espirit de corp and the need to maintain loyalty to former boss is also a contributing factor in his support for third term. Oyinlola from the South-west is also a home boy who must show loyalty to the big brother.

Chimaroke Nnamani
Governor Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State has a chummy relationship with the President and will do anything to elongate the President's tenure. For Nnamani however, the third term project seems an opportunity to pay back President Obasanjo who helped him hobble his political opponents in the state prior to 2003 elections. This is perhaps why Nnamani has stuck out his neck for the project. Last week's Southern Governors and Opinion Leaders' meeting hosted by Nnamani is believed in some quarters to be an attempt to push the third term agenda to the next level. Some people said Nnamani also will prefer the third term agenda as it helps to sustain his immunity and protect him against those who accuse him of sundry offences. He also nurses presidential ambition, waiting in the wings in the event that the third term project fails and ‘Baba’ settles for somebody from the South-south or South-East.

Sam Egwu
Dr. Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State is said to be a level-headed politician who has managed to keep together those who would have constituted the opposition in the state but another term in office for him under the third term deal appears all too tempting. Egwu has also been a politician sailing with the winds. He once flirted with the Atiku camp but quickly rushed back to President Obasanjo when the repercussion of his earlier move became unpalatable.

Lucky Igbinedion
Beyond the opportunity of an extra term in office, support for the third term agenda by Governor Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State was said to have been largely to cover his back and stave off possible prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC is said to have a heavy dossier on him and as such the only sanctuary is the third term thing. Igbinedion is also at daggers drawn with Chief Tony Anenih over the governorship in 2007. Igbinedion wants to nominate his successor and Anenih insists he should be the one to instal the next governor as he installed the incumbent. The third term project seems to have settled all that as Igbinedion himself can continue in office beyond 2007.

Donald Duke
In the same league of loyalists of the President like Odili is the Cross Rivers State Governor, Mr. Donald Duke. But Duke has refused to stick out his neck for the third term project. The extra term that will accrue to him will come handy to help him push his Tinapa Project to the next level. As a performing governor, he believes he will be up for consideration for the presidency, should Obasanjo beat a retreat and return to Ota in 2007. So, he has to be seen as the president’s boy.

Ahmed Sani Yerima
Contrary to earlier reports that the Zamfara State Governor, Ahmed Sani Yerima did not join other governors in endorsing the Third Term Project, THISDAY gathered last night that he actually signed on the deal. Rather, it was the Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa who did not sign.
Bafarawa, a core believer in the position of the North which is against the third term agenda was mistaken for Sani, his Zamfara State counterpart in yesterday’s calculation.
Sani is a close ally of Obasanjo, though he was elected on ANPP platform. His alliance with Obasanjo had been his insurance against the on-slaught of some Obasanjo men like National Security Adviser, Lt. Gen. Aliyu Mohammed Gusau (rtd) who wanted to prevent the Zamfara State governor from being re-elected in 2003. Therefore, Sani’s endorsement of the 3rd term project can be understood in this light. It will help him to stay on for another four years and further entrench himself as the major domo in the state’s politics. He was said to have been abroad while most of the contact meetings went on in the last few weeks which was why it was initially difficult to ascertain his position. But we now have it on good authority that Sani Yerima is one of the 30 pro-third term governors while Bafarawa is not.

Ahmed Makarfi
That Governor Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna state is one of the key promoters of the third term agenda is not news really. He is a faithful loyalist of President Obasanjo, a qualification which made it possible for him to head the Constitution Review Panel set up by the Presidency to prepare the grounds for the National Political Reforms Conference (NPRC). Many believe that the report of that Committee had in fact been prepared by Aso Rock Strategists which was merely reproduced by the Makarfi Committee and submitted to Obasanjo. He is in the deal mainly because he has been penciled down as one of the possible Vice Presidential candidates in an Obasanjo third term government. Also, he expects that should the third term bid fail, which many northerners believe will happen, Obasanjo will fall back on him for the presidential ticket come 2007.

Adamu Aliero
Governor Aliero is a ‘loyalist’ of President Olusegun Obasanjo. Although, he belongs to the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party (ANPP), he has always played a supportive role for the president each time the need arises. He was the one who was used to break the ranks of the ANPP in the wake of growing opposition to Obasanjo’s re-election in the 2003 presidential elections. It would be recalled that when the ANPP presidential candidate and main opponent of Obasanjo in that elections , Buhari had challenged the results of the polls up to the apex court in the land. But Aliero was never in support of Buhari’s action. He was the first ANPP governor who went to visit Obasanjo and in fact joined in cutting the presidential victory cake at the party organized in celebration of Obasanjo’s re-election in 2003.Like most of his colleagues in the third term project, he stands to benefit by way of an automatic third term as governor of Kebbi State. He has also played other roles in warding off opposition to the presidency. For Aliero, a third term for Obasanjo is also a third term for himself in the governorship. Aliero is one of the 20 governors being investigated by the EFCC. Many of his opponents in Kebbi State believe that he overpromises and underdelivers. And that the same would happen with the third term project for Obasanjo.

Modu Ali Sheriff
He is one of those really neck deep in the third term project. His father is a friend of Obasanjo. He is in the plot because of old family ties with Obasanjo and protection against the EFCC. Sheriff also stands to benefit from an Obasanjo third term because he has like, his colleagues in the plot, been promised PDP support for a second term. With this arrangement, those hoping to run against Sherriff in 2007 on the platform of PDP in Borno State, may just be working in vain.

Bukola Saraki
For Dr Bukola Saraki, the main reason behind his decision to support Obasanjo’s third term bid all the way is to secure an automatic second term for himself. For many years, Dr Olusola Saraki has been the political godfather of Kwara politics. In 2003, the older Saraki successfully installed his son and daughter as governor and senator, respectively. But in the coming 2007 elections, the scenario is gradually becoming unpredictable as many interest groups have massed up to oppose Bukola Saraki’s re-election bid. With a third term for Obasanjo, Governor Saraki is assured of an automatic second term. There are also those who believe that the younger Saraki is afraid of being on the wrong side of the Presidency so as not to be blackmailed with the failure of his father’s bank, Societe General.

Danjuma Gole
Governor Danjuma Goje is in the third term project for his own political survival. In Gombe State, the power of incumbency does not really count in governorship elections. In 2003, Goje defeated incumbent Governor Abubakar Hashidu. With the third term project in place, a second term is made easy for Goje. Thus, unlike Hashidu, he will not therefore need to subject himself to real re-election battle.

Abdullahi Kure
Niger State Governor Abdullahi Kure is a protege of esthwhile military president, General Ibrahim Babangida. Ordinarily, Babangida is supposed to be running for the 2007 presidency but sensing that there is no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2007 with the third term plan and not one to confront a moving train by contesting against an incumbent, the man popularly called the evil genius has retreated. And Kure has taken a cue from his political benefactor.
In supporting third term, Kure is also bouyed by the opportunity it will offer him to get a third term in office.

Adamu Muazu
He is a loyal boy of the President. He is one of the few who has unfettered access to the president. He is the chairman of the contact committee of the third term project. In return, he has been promised the position of Vice President either if Atiku is forced out or in the third term. Muazu also played a major role in stabilizing the North East zone for Obasanjo at the height of the Obasanjo-Atiku feud. He is for the project mainly because of his hope to become the Vice President in post 2007 government or should Obasanjo drops the third term project, which many northerners like him believe he should, Muazu will be a beneficiary.

Umaru Yar'Adua
He is a scion of the famous Musa Yar ‘Adua political dynasty. His father was minister of Lagos Affairs in the first Republic. His late brother, Major General Shehu Musa Yar Adua (rtd), was one of the closest loyalists of President Obasanjo. When Obasanjo was military Head of State, Umaru’s brother, Shehu was the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters. He has been very close to Obasanjo since then. He is supporting the third term bid on account of old loyalty to Obasanjo. In return, Umaru is also assured of an automatic third term as Governor of Katsina State. Also, the co-operation between the Katsina State Governor and the Presidency will help Yar’Adua to checkmate the growing influence of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), a native of Daura, in Katsina State politics. Yar’Adua is also in the plot because he expects to benefit should Obasanjo drop the third term bid, which many northerners believe he should,

Saminu Turaki
Governor Saminu Turaki is the Chairman of the finance committee of the third term project. Like Aliero, he was elected on the platform of the ANPP. But that may be at the theoretical level. In practical terms, Turaki is even more neck deep in the political scheming to elongate Obasanjo’s tenure than many PDP governors. It is instructive to note that Turaki played a similar role during the regime of late Gen Sani Abacha, as he was actively involved in mobilizing funds to prosecute the Abacha-for-ever campaign. THISDAY checks reveal that the Jigawa state governor is in the third term plot as a way of securing a third term for himself and for fears of the EFCC. It is also part of his plans to use the opportunity to erase the negative image of an Abacha boy, which has continued to dog his political path since the birth of the current political dispensation. He was one of the politicians thrown up by Abacha before the sudden demise of the dictator.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim
What is a man like Governor Abba Ibrahim doing in the club of the 30 Governors who want to ruin Nigeria’s hard-won democracy? In his political career, he has been in and out of government. He was a commissioner before he became a governor in 1991. He was one of those whose tenure were truncated by the military in 1993. He bounced back in 1999 and was re-elected in 2003. He has been three term governor. His reason for backing the third term plot is that in return, he is assured of an automatic fourth term as governor, an unprecedented record in the history of the state. Ibrahim is the only governor who has publicly declared support for the third term project. He also believes the third term project will buy him a reprieve from EFCC hawks.

Jolly Nyame
Like Abba Ibrahim, he has been a third term governor. Under normal political atmosphere, Nyame should ordinarily be an ally of Vice President Atiku Abubakar who he served as campaign manager in 1990 in the old Gongola State before Taraba and Adamawa States were created.
But the fear of EFCC has become the beginning of wisdom for most. The Taraba State Governor is one of those believed to have been investigated by the EFCC and on whose head a threat of possible sanctions is hanging. THISDAY checks indicate that Nyame is supporting the third term bid all the way as a way of staving off EFCCs scare. Besides, he also wants a fourth term, which, of course, is assured if the third term plot sails through.

Joshua Dariye
Joshua Dariye is in the plot simply because he wants to survive politically. He was arrested in London for alleged money laundering two years ago. Like Alamieyeseigha, he jumped police bail and fled to Nigeria where he has been facing threats of impeachment. The EFCC has also been harassing his aides and members of the State House of Assembly who had in 2004 blocked his impeachment. Dariye does not want to go the way of Alamieyeseigha, hence his decision to sign up for the third term bid as a way of negotiating his survival from the EFCCs inquisition. Besides, he also wants a third term for himself as governor, if at least to elongate his protection from arrest and trial in court under the immunity clause for another four years.

Adamu Abdullahi
He is a loyalist of Obasanjo to the core. It was on account of his loyalty to the president that he was removed by his colleagues as chairman of the Governors Forum two years ago. His support for the third term project stems from the fact that apart from being a loyalist of the president, he is one of the possible candidates for the vice presidential ticket. He is also one of the governors angling to replace Obasanjo should the third term project fails.

George Akume
For George Akume, the main interest for him in the third term project is political survival. Having signed up for a third term for Obasanjo, he has been assured of an automatic third term as well. This will put paid to the political ambition of those in PDP from the state who have been warming up to run him out of the governorship seat. Akume also jumped ship from Atiku’s camp to Obasanjo apparently to escape the EFCC hunt.

Idris Ibrahim
Kogi State is one state that would naturally be a state to watch in the 2007 elections. Governor Idris Ibrahim, hails from the Igala axis of the state. The Ebiras and Okuns, have not hidden their determination to have one of their sons elected as the state governor in 2007. But under the third term plot, Idris is assured of an automatic second term ticket. Thus, his reason for supporting a third term bid for Obasanjo is to have an assurance that he will be re-elected in 2007 and that the accusation of non-performance will not debar his re-election second term.

Segun Agagu
Governor Segun Agagu of Ondo State has always been a close associate of the President and has always been part of the permutations towards 2007. So it is no surprise that he is backing third term. Supporting the project will assure him re-election in 2007 with a possibility of even a third term in 2011.

Achike Udenwa
Governor Achike Udenwa of Imo State moves with the tide. He had once hobnobbed with Vice-President Abubakar's camp but he is now decidedly for third term.
Udenwa also tried to position himself initially for the vice-presidency slot but sensing that an opportunity of another term in office appears surer under the third term project, he quickly queued up for it, especially to fend off and neutralise the Kema Chikwes and Hope Uzodinmas who are equally neck-deep in the third term project.

Victor Attah
The same consideration seems to have driven Governor Victor Attah of Akwa Ibom. He is said to have a not too pleasant file awaiting him at the EFCC. For him therefore, there is a need to embrace third term which will also guarantee for him continuity in office. Like Igbinedion, Attah was an ally of Vice-president Atiku Abubakar before and he had to dump him and embrace third term for survival in the face of growing local opposition. He is also said to be desperate to reclaim the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state chapter now held by Ambassador Sam Edem, Chair-man of Niger Delta Develop-ment Commission (NDDC).

The way I see it only 2 Igbo governors have not endorsed this trash;
Ngige and Orji Kalu.
I thumbs up to them for that one.
Does it mean EFCC has nothing on them?
In any case they seem to be the only real MEN of the lot.

Bro Greg!
quote:
I just think it is barbaric in nature, and that BNW should not countenance such scurrilous and criminally inhumane topics...Greg

Bro Greg i understand were you are going, but you misunderstood it. what do you call criminally? and inhumane here and why?!. this Topic carries a conditional statement that is backed by nigerian Law, authority and constitution!- if any person or Groupp should unacceptably desecreate and manipulate nigerian constitution to serve his or her sucidal mission of "sitting Thight" personal greedy Ambitions. an Act that will throw the Nation into endless tension, Confusion and catastrophic War and bloodshed! Death and only Death is the punishment. so this is Law and Law is Law!.
in USA anybody who commit the crime of killing. The law says Death or capital punishment if you wish to call it so.
now if met a someone, who intends to commit the act of killing in USA and i tells him "you will be killed if.." like the title of this tread,
then according to you Greg, i am scurrilous and criminally inhumane!!??.when of course my warning could save his life and that of his would be victim/s.

Markus, please...assassination is not the same as trial by law and punishment. I'm done with this subject.

so bro Greg your angst against the Title of this thread, which is an ordinary warning, but could or will be great in saving Lives in Tens, thousands and even millions- only God knows! is misplaced and if i may use your Word- scurilous and criminally inhumane!!
there is no better Word for opposition and an attempt to block a warning that could save tens and hundred of thousands of Souls!
so Greg, if this thread is stopped, you and those responsible for that will be partly guilty of the innocent Souls that will perish in this "sit tight" Madness, that Obasanjo and his Crooks want to force down the throat of nigerians.Their innocent bloods will be in your hands and fellow misguids - history shall witness this.

ha, Assasination!, who will benefit from that?. nobody is saying Obasanjo should be assasinated, but if he commit the Crime of pushing nigerians into hell fire in the name of "life presidency", he must be brought to Book and tried!. but if in the process of trying to bring him to book, he resisted with Arms and security around him, and got killed in the process, then that is nobody Fault.
it is a general "code" worldwide that people sent to arrest a dangerous Criminal, if that criminal resist in such a way to endanger their lives, they are free to neutralize him/her even if it means killing or wounding him.
so Greg b4 you leave this thread, i want you to withdraw your statement against the topic of this thread. For God will judge you for attempting to block a topic that would have save many Souls!

Markus Weber,
Does it mean EFCC has nothing on them?
I had felt that the note of sarcasm in my question was self evident.

Lamidi Adedibu asks Yoruba to back third term From Seun Adeoye, Osogbo

FROM Chief Lamidi Adedibu, the "stongman of Ibadan Politics" came an advice yesterday that all Yoruba should back President Olusegun Obasanjo's (alleged) third term bid. Guardian

Blockheads like this wasted confusionist is the reason why your nigeria will never rise to its full potentials. It does not matter where they are found, in Yoroba land, Igbo or Awusa, when an idiot’s statement is taken seriously then something is wrong with whoever heeds to such infested call. This political “ashawo” – adedibu, you better believe was among the abacha forever crowd and what the ape failed today to see is had their abacha cry succeeded he would today be in prison or dead. People like this town crier should be hundreds of miles away from obasanjo; they must be kept at bay for the business of governance to proceed sincerely. Just like tony the stealing anenih, this same man will be singing awusa song should an islamist succeed the ape.

Washington Threatens Sanctions:
quote:
Washington proposes to take several punitive measures against Abuja if President Olusegun Obasanjo seeks a third term. Tension is growing between the two countries over Nigeria's future leadership. To cap it, the United States Government is reportedly furious with what State Department officials called "an unwarranted attack on the country with the tacit support of the Nigerian leadership by Presidential Spokesman, Femi Fani Kayode". He recently rebuked Washington over comments by serving and former administration officials who frown at suggestions of a third term bid by Obasanjo. Sources confirmed that the government has taken the unusual step of informing members of Congress of a possible leadership problem in Nigeria.

It is my civic duty to call on Patriotic Nigerians to rise against dictatorship. It is my duty to make the call in the language of my country and not in some sissy foreign tongue. I made this humane call with the love of my countrymen on my mind.

Casting in my mind the latest post by Adamu, I draw upon the wisdom of the venerable Ukaobasi(may his lettered pen grace the thoughts of readers everywhere) because I note, not unexpectedly, that this post by Adamu seems to be both a justification of the title of the thread, as well as an indirect pseudo-personal repartee against those who may have criticized it, which is his right, as it was my right to take issue with it in the first place.

Bypassing any slight, whether real or un-intended, I do however admire the sincere civic motivation of this gentleman, and the love he bears toward his countrymen. I myself have many times, and recently, advocated the bearing of arms against tyranny, and I am not opposed to the use of force where it is just and after peaceful means have proven utterly useless, which I believe is quite the case in Adamu's beloved Nigeria, and yet even in war there are rules and codes of conduct. If one must kill, is it to be done without warning and with savagery and wicked deceit, like a thief in the night? Must one batter one's enemy with clubs and sticks finding him without cover and defenceless. Shall a man kill another taken captive by him? If so, then we retrogress by millenia, beyond the ancient soldiers of unquestionable honor to the marauding and murduring brigands of pre-Cambrian mentality. In brief, I take no issue with the end, only with the means and how it has been described.

Markus,

I think our differences may lie in the fact that I have been a soldier, and perhaps you have not.
