There was a question no one seem to pay care to, which was will the Anioma state be counted as an Igbo state or be part of the awusa twisted geographical invention, south south? Nice thing someone raised this question and if it turns out that they would actually be part of the silly south south invention, then my support is forthwith withdrawn. This is for everyone including the people of Anioma with good ears, it makes absolute sense to have these brothers counted as an Igbo state they are.

Anioma indigenes appears to be divided as to where they would rather be associated with in the current Nigerian political reality. This dichotomy can be cleared by a sort of referendum, though the majority will wield a form of tyranny on the minority based on the results of such a referendum. The southeast following the North/Southwest gang-up, to prosecute the war for oil, with the acquiecence of the "south-south" peoples has remained politically out of favour. Thus one can undrstand the schisim in Anioma, the debate of culture versus economics of survival in the current dynamics in Nigeria.

This dynamics is bound to change, often the change is usually not by design, but rather as a fall out of wrong political equation.

Culture Vs. Economics

I think the people of Anioma should critically look at those two variables before making their decisions.

An unconfirmed rumor has it that the people of Anioma may have the 6th State slot with the State Capital at Awka.

If this rumor turns out to be true, then, the people of Anioma is finished and doomed for good. Then, the rest of Delta State without Anioma will become another Kuwait or Bahrain of the Middle-east and the people of Anioma will be struggling for crumbs from the Southeast.

To the people of Anioma out there, reject this impending domination before it is too late. A stich in time save nine. Look at history everywhere and the story is the same.

I knew it's a matter of time before the traitor in you surfaces. Dude you finally but slowly revealed the crude side of your awusa used and dumped soul! How much are your so-called confused people of anioma getting thus far from your edo 'brethren' is what we'll like you to tell us. How callous can one who all along claims to have lineage to Ndiigbo be without knowing it?????? Dude you're phony, very bogus!

State Creation, How Wise Will The Southeast Be?
By
Eugene Uzum Esq.
Nigerian Reformers Academy Leeds United Kingdom
Nigdel55@yahoo.com

The Southeast region of Nigeria is preparing for a new bride. The Constitutional Amendment Committee and the Political Reform Conference had among their recommendations that a sixth State be created for the Southeast geo-political zone, to equate the number of States within the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. This is a welcome development especially with the fact that other geo-political zones have six states within a region while the Southeast have just five. The creation of an additional State is not coming without the usual political wrangling that embodies State creation in Nigeria. Looking back, a large chunk of the present South-South region used to be part of the Eastern region especially Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. They were formerly known as the Oil Rovers Protectorate. Also the defunct Bendel State and present Edo and Delta Statea had Bendel Ibos stretching from Asaba to Ndokwa, Ika kingdom down to Igbanke in the present day Edo State. The implication is that the Igbo Nation is far bigger than the five Eastern States as it is today. The irony of it all is that in the so called map of Biafra, all these areas listed above was part and parcel of Biafra meaning that the Igbos understand that if they are diplomatic and sincere to themselves they can expand territorially and move beyond the confines of the pocket size territories they have today.

The North, which used to be a contemporary of the South- East, has to its advantage the territorial mass of the whole of Northwest, Northeast, North-Central and the Middle Belt. Even parts of Benue-Idoma axis, which shares a lot in cultural affinity with the Igbos, are grouped as Northerners.

In the West, Afenifere stretches from the six western States to Kwara and Kogi with the Yoruba interest paramount and well protected. Much of this was achieved by the big brother role played by the Western Region in making sure that Odua interest and territories were not Balkanized to the disadvantage of the generality of the Yorubas. What is happening to the East? Nothing more than relegating themselves to a pocket size territory, which is a big disadvantage in the power game of politics. Permit me to say that, practically, the Igbo nation starts and ends with the five Eastern States while in theory and by virtue of the Biafran map they stretch across Ibo speaking Delta to Ibibioland. This confusion within where Igbo starts and ends is the chief architect of their marginalization in the frontline of Nigerian politics. Therefore Igbos has been marginalizing themselves. Many questions are waiting for answers, they include, if the Ikwerres, Egbelus and Ndonis of Rivers State are Igbos or if the Ibo speaking Delta and Ibo speaking Edos (Igbankes) are part of the Igbo Nation, what structures are on ground to get these kingdoms back for a sixth Igbo State?

The Political Reform Conference did recommend in its submission that a sixth Igbo State be created and the Committee on Constitutional Amendment did recommend same, all in a bid to wake the blind sleeping giant but to my chagrin some self serving Igbo leaders are recommending Adada State, Urashi State, Aba State, Orlu State and maybe Umuofia State. The Igbos need no consignor to tell them that what they must go for is convincing Ibos outside the present five Eastern State for a brand new Igbo State like Anioma State or Ndoni Andoni State. The proponents of Urashi, Adada or so State are politically myopic as the creation of any State within the five present Eastern State will be hypocritical. The bellicose contention that a new State should be created within the five Eastern State while Ohaneze is making frantic to unite all Igbos irrespective of their State and region amounts to a conflict of ideology. Ohaneze even went as far as making a Delta Ibo indigene in the person of Col. Joe Achuzia their Secretary-General, therefore who is fooling who? Below is the number of Local Governments as it stands in Nigeria today.

SOUTH EAST 95 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
SOUTH WEST 137 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
SOUTH SOUTH 122 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
NORTH WEST 186 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
NORTH WEST 112 LOCAL GOVERNMENT
NORTH CENTRAL 121 LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

That is how it stands regarding the number of local governments within each region. With an additional State like an Anioma State, the South East will have more local governments and still maintain the former status quo, more federal appointments, more members within the Senate and the House of Representative, more population, full integration into the oil producing zone and most of all, more territories. How many Local Government Areas can an Adada State muster? Your guess is as good as mine.

The name Anioma is more of an Igbo expression than Ebonyi or Anambra. Proximity to Anambra is an added advantage and there is little or no barrier in language neither is there a lacuna in religion and culture therefore Igbos should actualize their dreams of integrating their folks or remain a second-class Nation forever.
The consequences of not having an Anioma State and fronting a glorified Local Government in the East as a State cannot be underrated. According to Akbar Hashiemi Rafsanjani of Iran, the greatest enemy a man has is his ex-wife, because she is so far, yet so near and most times knows the man more than he can imagine. The Anioma nation will not want to be an ex-wife to the South-East but will as well not force herself to be reintegrated as there is a deep lacuna.

The Igbos of River State and Delta State are to large extent comfortable. Viewing from the present political climate in both States they cannot be said to be pushovers in their various rights. The Ibos of Delta and Rivers States have been seen and heard politically, and as such my wakeup call to the Igbo Nation should not be misconstrued for an SOS appeal. Rather it should be seen as a pragmatic opinion radically calling on Igbo leadership to move from the old Brigade of fanatical Igboism to a more modern global stage. This will go a long way towards answering the Igbo question regarding political leadership in Nigeria.

First of all, Edo is not part of Delta State. Edo is a State of its own.

Secondly, what I may label an impending hostile union on the basis of language or culture is arrant nonsense. This is about economic survival of our people. The people of Anioma will not survive in the union of the over populated Southeast with little land mass to contain them.

Thirdly, whoever continues to call Hausa people Awusa may try to visit one of the their cities and when you come back, I bet that you will have nothing but respect for them. I recommend Kaduna. All those untarred roads people depict at Onitsha cannot be found in Kaduna. It is a very developed and a very beautiful city. Hausa has vast expanse of land for agriculture when the oil in the South dries up. Why the label Awusa, when their economy is better than southeast? They are more organized politically than any other region. Education gap is not widening but closing at a very fast rate.

To make Anioma an appendage of the Southeast, and something that may not be reversed easily, is something that people of Anioma need to reject and resist NOW.

Finally, I say big No to that union which history has shown that it did not work anywhere in the former Eastern Region.

Developed with Anioma's resources and here you are bragging about that while displaying juvenile hostility towards Igbo folks that had no hands in the neglect Anioma people suffered and will continue to unless people like you get back to their senses to appreciate the protection you guys stand to get from your elder kin in hard core Igbo vicinity.

Anioma People Suffering?

From whose hands? You are a big joke. Lack of a separate State of Anioma in the present oil-rich Delta means suffering to you? Our people agitated for Anioma State before Delta State was created. Now, Anioma State is no longer necessary in State of Delta.

Every State receives federal allocation. The government of Kaduna State utilized its allocation well while the Southeast squandered theirs.

Hello, protection from who? Protection from Southeast? People in crises will protect Anioma?
John MCKenro of tennis fame will say "you can't be that serious." Those are the words I have for you now.

Rick,

Your arguments are getting more + more serpentine as you go along in this your struggle. That leads me to believe that you either do not as yet have a full grasp of ‘the way things are’, or you have chosen to put on blinders. One minute you want Anioma State, the next minute you want Anioma to remain in Delta State. One minute you say your people are suffering, the next minute you say they are not. One minute you want the capital to be in Anioma if the new State includes parts of Anambra, the next minute you want absolutely nothing to do with any State in the South-East. Before you challenge what I’ve written, you had better read your previous posts. You are wide-open on all fronts.

I was forced to deeply consider what you were on about when you spoke of Kaduna utilizing its allocation well. That implies that the States in the South-South which suffer an absurd amount of underdevelopment (despite their significant forex contributions) did not utilize their allocations well. This implies that the concentration of PTF funds in the North never happened. This implies that the marginalisation of parts of the country does not exist. What rubbish. Please stop moaning + get on with accepting the deplorable state of affairs in that country you fight to keep one.

I told you that your position would receive support if you advanced arguments in its favour. Thus far you have not done that – far from it; principally because we don’t know what your position is.

Igboblood,

Students and scholars of business will tell you that that is no one best way to manage a business, make business decision (or any decisions) as these decisions are made contingent upon situation. We will continue to move the goal post as events continue to unfold for the benefit of Anioma people.

It is now very apparent that the a union with the Southeast will be suicidal to the people of Anioma. The history of Southeast with other minorities are there in black and white.

Anioma people cannot afford the impending doom if annexed to Southeast or if parts of the Southeast is annexed to it.

Adoora,

Is there anything currently happening in Southeast that our people (Anioma) can embrace? What? What is it? Tell me. The roads at Onitsha have not been tarred 35 years after the civil war. Are you guys waiting for Obasanjo to come and fix your backyards? What do you have to offer to the people of Anioma?

Has anybody noticed that our people (Anioma), after graduating from Colleges and Universities do not seek a living in the Southeast? Reason being that, Southeast themselves are looking for greener pastures outside their domain. Why are they luring our people to come and embrace non-existent paradise?

Finally, we the people of Anioma are praying hard that our leaders back home do not sell us for "peanuts" to achieve their selfish personal interests.

Rick,

I am such a ‘scholar of business’;up to the highest level possible actually. The Anioma situation is however not + as such should not be viewed as a purely business decision. It is mainly about ideology. That’s where your argument falters.

Whether this Anioma chap knows it or fakes not to, I'm satisfied knowing his double image has been unveiled, his hate for Igbo proper which has been shielded in allegory is finally not a secret therefore job done. When he asked from whose hands would they be suffering all I can think of is was it not the same chap whose whining how his folks has been neglected by having no single son of what is it again, em Anioma ever as the governor of any state associated with them got out of control? If they have not been SUFFERING why then would he show the initial outburst that greeted his previous posts? Either one is Igbo or not there’s no in between and what this young chap has tried but failed is to have it both ways. When it’s convenient we’re bombarded about their Igbo lineage and other times you hear some bull about Kaduna, Kano and all that JAZZ!

Had I read IgboB’s first, the urge to reply to the Anioma indigene’s nonsense would have been eliminated for IgboB captured my mindset. I’m letting mine out just for the record, for the subject to realize that I still retain the potency and propensity to fire back. This should be eye opener to every Igbo proper how the conflicted Igbos’ misdirected and stupid anger affect their direction. How self acclaimed Igbos warm up to the same awusa (Eat your heart out, son. Is awusa not the Igbo spelling of the westernized bunkum you prefer?) that has been responsible for the oppression they experience beats me. Misdirected anger and aggression are symptoms of raw stupidity.

“The history of Southeast with other minorities are there in black and white.”

Yet he never shared this “history” in colored or black and white with any?

“What do you have to offer to the people of Anioma?”

Quit whining and tell what this Anioma will bring to the table. More cries? Was it not JFK that cautioned "ask not what your country can do for you" but what YOU the Anioma can do for your people?

I'm reading thru the thread and gaining alot from everyone's contributions, please dont throw a spanner in it for "people like me" who genniunely come to this site to gain more insight on issues affecting the Ibo people...

Rick, the infacstrutural problems we have had in Anambra state(of which I'm an indigiene) to date has more to do with very bad management by "governace" and most importantly a large scale conspiracy to "keep Ndi'Igbo down" by Nigeria as a whole (the latter should not be regarded as "wild conspiracy theory accusation", its for real).

Reagrding your concerns of the availability of natural resources, let me assure you that, Ananmbra state has vast economically viable reserves of hydrocarbon (oil), believe it or not....Having said that, the problem of lack of development of "Anioma" in Delta state MAY have more to do with your all being "IBO" (please apply the conspircay theory previosuly stated at this point), hence the reason why waiting for "oil money" to trickle down to your side might be considered a fruitless waste of time...

I believe the concern here Rick is that you "Aniomas" dont like to be refered to as "Ibo", you very much believe you should not be lumped with Igbo people, (in other words you'd very much rather die second class in Nigeria, than be joined with "Igbo"). Where this may be true for whatever historical reasons you might want to reference, the rest of non Ibo speaking Nigeria does not see that way....."Aniomas" and the rest of AnaIgbo are all one and the same as far as Nigeria is concerned.

Mebrian,

Igbo proper and Anioma what? If one looks at names of Southeast States, I think Anioma stands out as real Igbo name. Anyway, you "de make me laugh." Again, "you can't be that serious."

Furthermore, my reference to Kaduda is because of your insistence in calling Hausa people Awusa. Just as "Awusa" is a degrading/derogatory word to Hausas, so are "Okoro, Kobokobo aje enia" degrading to Igbos. Similary, Igbos call Yorubas "Ngbati" and the Hausas call them "mai kashi akwanu."

When and Igbo tells an Igbo person, that he/she is an Awusa or behaving like awusa, that person is indirectly been told that he/she is "EWU."

Hello, it is from this context that the people you think are "EWU" have all their big cities developed while the roads at Onitsha have not been tarred since the civil war ended. Huge refuse is still all over IMO and Abia.

Igboblood,

Well, while yours is about Ideology, ours is about ECONOMICS.

Adaora

Probably, I should also address you as Adanma.

History has it that during the Nazi Germany when Adolf Hiter was trying to exterminate the Jews, I don't think that anyone will come out and say, look, I'm a jew.

According to you, If the Igbos or anything that looks Igbo are being persecuted due a just civil war that was fought to safeguard the interest of Ndiigbo, why will a defenceless group (Anioma)come out and say, look, we are Igbos. We do not have to say it but we know who we are. We are the IBO speaking group in former Western Region to Bendel State and now Delta State. We respectfully reserve the word "IGBO" to core Igbo as opposed to "proper" Igbo, a term used by Mebiafran.

Hey, I hope that you are not thinking that all the Federal Allocation to Delta State remains in Warri, Effurun and Sapele area of Urubo and Itsikiri? I can understand why they, the Urobos/Istsikiris might not let go the Governorship to Anioma area that is very close to core Igbo land. After all, the Capital is located at Asaba. There is a lot of over flow of Capital from Asaba to Onitsha. We may not have both at the same time. Probably, if the capital is moved inland or half way between Warri and Anioma, that could cool some nerves. They, the Urobos have interests to protect too.

Now, faced with these two alternatives and with ECONOMICS as the main focus and not ideology, language and cullture, Anioma is better of in Delta State.

rick is not an Igbo man of Anioma origin. Like emaka reuben okala who claims to be Ikwerre Igbo, these people actually are Edo or Bini nationals whose ancestry settled in Igbo land long ago to enjoy Igbo liberal political and business culture -- something their oba could not offer them because of his geriatric authoritarian culture. This is why rick feels more at home with Edo, yoroba or Bini people.

But rick, like reuben, has internalized the ancient Edo/yoroba/Bini dislike for Igbo competitiveness, even though he may have been born in Igboland, may be Anioma, and probably speaks Igbo. Igbo/Biafrans have to watch out for people like rick; if war breaks out today between Igbo and nigeria, rick will be on the wrong side fighting Igbo regardless of the hospitality he and his family have enjoyed in Igbo land during the years they have settled there.

BTW, this guy knows nothing about business or economics, at least in the nigerian case.

On what basis do you conclude that Rick is not Igbo when he told you he does not have to say he's Igbo for you to realize he is Igbo? You and Chiboy should stop throwing a monkey wrench into this fascinating discussion, and always get your facts straight before you spew your nonsense.

Amadi,

You claimed that I know nothing about business or economics from Nigeria's perspective. Are you sure that you know the difference between the two from the context of my stand on the current discussion?

Well, I have a question for you. When the Northern delegation let by Umuru Dikko rejected the 25 percent derivation proposed by Niger Delta, what was the basis of that rejection? Is it on the basis of BUSINESS or ECONOMICS and to use your own words, "at least in the Nigerian case?" You too "de make me laugh."

Well, the basis of my argument all along is strictly ECONOMICS and not BUSINESS. Please,do not inject ACADEMICS into this before you are blown away. You have already stumbled by asserting that I do not know anything about business and economics. Where that came from, I do not know.

And, this will be my last response to your off point unwarranted attack as I do not want this to boil down to "show me your degrees." I'm above that.

I will respond to posts that address the key issue here. Which is, ECONOMIC survival and not BUSINESS survival of Anioma under core Igbo control.
