Court declares Obi winner of Anambra election
The Court of Appeal, Enugu on Wednesday declared Mr Peter Obi of the All
Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of the Anambra governorship election
held in 2003. Chris Ngige was elected governor on the ticket of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP). Shortly after the April 19, 2003 gubernatorial
election,
Obi had challenged Ngige's victory at the state's Election Petition
Tribunal, claiming that he won. Obi went to the Election Petition Tribunal,
headed by
Justice Garba Narbaruma, to challenge Ngige's victory. The major relief Obi
sought was his declaration as the winner of the election having polled the
majority votes. The judgement did not come until August 12, 2005 owing to the
number of witnesses called by the two parties to the dispute. While Ngige
called 427 witnesses, Obi called 30. The tribunal ruled that Obi was the duly
elected governor of the state. The acting Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh,
said the ruling of the tribunal was a clear indication that Ngige did not win
the election. Umeh said that Ngige should not go to the Court of Appeal
Court, as it would be a waste of time.
