Uwazurike Taken To Court Naked
Security operatives on Friday dragged the Leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazurike to the premises of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja without his clothes on.
Uwazurike and eight other members of MASSOB are standing trial before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako over alleged treasonable felony. Although the case had been adjourned before prison warders and other security operatives brought the MASSOB leaders to the court premises in two security vehicles, their lawyer, Mr. Kevin Emeka Okoro, claimed the MASSOB leader was brought to the court without his clothes on his body.
The security operatives who brought them to court had arrived the court premises at about 10 a.m. after Justice Nyako adjourned the matter to next week Monday. Hundreds of relatives of the detained persons and members of MASSOB had thronged the court premises to cheer up Uwazuruike but they were disappointed, as he was not even allowed to disembark from the Prison vehicle that brought them.
Okoro, who raised alarm over the alleged inhuman treatment meted out to the MASSOB leader, informed the court that “the accused person was there in the court premises without his clothes on his body. He told Justice Nyako, "My Lord, this inhuman treatment were parts of the ploy to kill Chief Uwazuruike. Can you imagine they brought him to the court naked? To ensure they satisfied themselves humiliating the accused, they decided to come to court late, after the matter might have been adjourned".
But Director of Public Prosecution in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Saliu Aliu in his reaction, said that the allegation against the prison official that Uwazurike was brought to court without his clothes would be investigated. Denying the allegation, he said that if it was true that such a thing happened, the officers who “carried out such inhuman act, if it is true, would be punished”.
