ON THE LOOSE AGAIN!
By Lucy Panton
FURIOUS cops were forced to allow an illegal immigrant accused of being a violent fraudster to walk free because Home Office officials were ‘too busy' to have him locked up.
This week's latest shocking example of the crisis that is swamping the Immigration Service means the 26-year-old Nigerian is back on our streets.
And the foreigner—who immigration officials openly admit should not be here—is free to offend again.
The man had been arrested and questioned by cops in Wimbledon, south London, over allegations of an assault on his girlfriend and credit card frauds.
He also had driving convictions.
The man originally came to Britain on a visa to study computers but it expired in June.
When officers who arrested him checked his status with officials at Lunar House, the Immigration centre in Croydon, they were told he should definitely NOT be in the country.
The police requested an immigration official come to the police station to serve removal papers on him. The deportation procedure would have then been started.
In a case where the suspect has overstayed his visa and has no right to asylum he would automatically be taken into custody and kept in a detention centre. Immigration would then ensure that the suspect is deported back on the first available flight.
The Chief Immigration Officer at Lunar House was personally informed of the situation.
But to their astonishment cops were told his staff were "too busy" to prepare papers.
Staff have admitted they are under "massive pressure" to concentrate on the list of 1,023 foreign criminals who should have been deported on their release from jail before anything else.
So ANOTHER potential threat was set free on bail. Dressed casually in a white vest, baseball cap and jeans the man left Wimbledon police station shortly before 8pm on Friday.
Our revelations come just days after sacked former Home Secretary Charles Clarke, below, unveiled a package of measures in an effort to salvage his position.
But our story shows the government still has no grip on the fiasco.
A Senior Scotland Yard source said: "This is a classic example of what police are facing day in and day out. We are doing our best to get criminals off our streets but when we inform immigration they are either unable or unwilling to deal with the case. Our officers are tearing their hair out. It is so frustrating. It boils down to lack of money and resources.
"There are not enough immigration officers to deal with the growing problem of foreigners committing crime. Our hands are tied and there is nothing left for us to do but release these people back on to the streets. The next time we see them is when they have committed another and often more serious crime."
Inspector Glen Smythe, chairman of the Met Police Federation, said: "Officers are dealing with cases where people are coming into custody who shouldn't be in the country and we are forced to let them go because immigration cannot deal with the workload."
An immigration source said: "People will be disgusted when they find out the Home Office are too busy to deal with this man. This is exactly how they got themselves into this mess in the first place. It appears they have learnt nothing from this whole fiasco."
When we confronted the man at his home yesterday he refused to discuss his case. He told us: "I can't say nothing without my lawyer. I can't say nothing about it."
Under new proposals, to be published before the end of the month, the government wants foreign citizens convicted of an imprisonable offence to automatically be deported at the end of their sentence.
The new rules will apply to all offenders convicted of an imprisonable offence, even if they are given a non-custodial sentence.
