EFCC Quizzes Imo Speaker Again From Amby Uneze in Owerri, 09.24.2006
Add To Favorites Print This Article Post Comment For the second time in two months, the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Kelechi Nwagwu has been quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for yet undisclosed reasons but not unconnected with financial matters. Two months ago, the Speaker was invited by the Commission to answer questions relating to Local Government Accounts, which had been under investigation, by the EFCC. Nwagwu, who later honored the invitation as soon as he returned from his vacation abroad, was let off the hook after being drilled for some days at the Commissionís headquarters and was re-arrested last Tuesday for more interrogation. Speaking on phone to THISDAY, the Head of Publicity of the Commission, Mr. Osita Nwajah confirmed that the Imo Speaker was in the net for about three days for purposes of investigations bothering on Local Government Account as it affects the Speaker and the House of Assembly. Nwajah said the interrogation of the Speaker would assist the Commission in its work to dig out more information on the subject matter, and dismissed that it was not intended to embarrass or witch-hunt the Speaker. Also in his reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Kennedy Ewuama dismissed the insinuation that the Commission arrested his boss because of his personal financial dealings, adding that his political detractors originated the false information. According to him, this is cheap blackmail. “My Oga is now in Owerri. They invited him as the head of the legislature. He is not even implicated in any matter.
You know because of his political interest, his detractors are working to witch-hunt him, he added.

Presidency: Odili visits Owerri, assures on victory
EMMA OGU, Owerri
RIVERS State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dr Peter Odili yesterday took his campaign to Imo State, promising to raise living standard of Nigerians if elected president next year.
Dr Odili in what could be termed as a historic visit to the Eastern Heartland arrived Owerri, the state capital to warm welcome by enthusiastic crowd, mostly PDP supporters and Imo indigenes.
Chief Odili in company of some notable leaders of the South South visited the state to consult with Imo leaders over his presidential ambition preparatory to the PDP National Convention.
Addressing a large turnout of Imo people at Disney Hotel on Onitsha Road, Owerri, the govenror declared that God’s time has come for the people of Nigeria to better their lives.
In his words, "God’s time has come for our people. When it is God’s time, no man can stop it. When it is time for a market to start, you don’t need a town crier to announce it. The change to come is one that will better the lives of our people."
Governor Odili paid glowing tribute to President Obasanjo for his achievement and stated that only God would reward him for what he has done for the country.
"He has given hope to the poor. He has given assurance to the oppressed. I thank God for giving us a president like Obasanjo, only God could pay him back."
He also gave kudos to a memb er of Board of Trustees of PDP Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu for gathering the people of the state together in his honour, describing him as a respected leader in the South East.
To crown it all, he asked the gathering to give a standing ovation to Chief Iwuanyanwu during which he (Governor Odili) sang song of praise to Jesus Christ. He was joined by the cheering crowd.
He disclosed that he had come to the state to present himself to delegates for the National Convention of the PDP while noting that the people’s time has come.
He solicited the support of everyone for his ambition.
"The time for the people has come you cannot shave somebody’s head in his absence. Our promise is that with your support, we shall win, hand to hand and we shall change the fortune of our people."
Governor Odili on his arrival to the state called at PDP secretariat at Egbu Road where he met briefly with party executive led by Prince M. O. Nlemigbo.
In his entourage were Austin Opara, deputy speaker of House of Representatives, Ambassador Matthew Mbu, members of the Rivers State Executive Council, and Imo community in Rivers State.
On ground to welcome, Dr. Odili were Chief Iwuanyanwu, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, Senator Arthur Nzeribe, traditional rules, members of Imo State House of Assemblky, traders, students and the youths.
Campaign posters of Governor Odili were filled at the premises of the hotel before his arrival. He was received with traditional drumming.
On arrival, the crowd at the venue burst into songs supportive of Odili’s presidential ambition.
He was presented to the community by Chief Iwuanyanwu who introduced him as a worthy in-law, a great leader and a well educated citizens who graduated from one of the best universities.
Dr. Odili had paid similar visit to states in the South South geo-political zones where he solicited support of PDP members for his ambition.
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday took what easily went as its single largest crackdown on corruption in Abia State.
In a statement released by the Commission, it listed Mrs. Eunice Uzor Kalu, mother of Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and 18 others wanted for alleged corrupt practices.
The other suspects include some aides, relations of the governor and top officials of the state government.
The officials are Mr.T.A. Orji, Chief of Staff to the Governor; Chuka Odum, Personal Assistant to the Governor; Moses Agoh, Commissioner for Finance; Mr. Duru, Chairman, Aba North Local Council; Prince Johnson Uzor, brother of the governor and member, House of Representatives; and Mascot Ikwechie Kalu, brother of the governor.
Others are Mrs. Mary Agha, Personal Assistant to the governor's mother; Mr. Anyanwoke, former Accountant General of Abia State; Mr. Obienyi Anyaogu, Director of Slok Group; Mr. O. Iheke, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Four cashiers of the Government House, Umuahia namely Romanus K. Madu, M. A. Udo, Okey Ude and Jone Udeugu.
Also included are Johnson Okoro, Police Attache, I.D. Okoro; Chinedum Elechi, a lawyer and Secretary to Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Abia State, and the Commissioner for Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The suspects are wanted for interrogation by the commission over charges of conspiracy, stealing, money laundering, official corruption and diversion of public funds."
The EFCC's action came barely a day the governor alerted the public of attempt to kill his mother on Monday morning.
In a statement, the Abia Government House had explained that the assailants struck at the Government Reserved Area (GRA) residence of the governor's mother a little after midnight on Monday.
The government described the attack as unfortunate, adding that the invaders were out to kill Mrs. Kalu.
The statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mrs. Onuoha Udeala, noted that in recent times, the governor's family had been receiving death threats from unknown quarters that are not comfortable with Kalu's comments on national issues.
The statement added that the assailants numbered about 50 and dressed in police uniform stormed Mrs. Kalu's home at about 12:30 a.m. and attempted to gain access into it.
But yesterday, the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Osita Nwajah, explained that the commission's operatives were at Mrs. Kalu's house to arrest her over corrupt charges.
Nwajah said that the EFCC was effecting court orders on the governor's mother and 18 other persons.
He claimed that the bid to arrest Mrs. Kalu was foiled by her security guards, who shot at EFCC officials.
The EFCC's spokesman alleged that there were plans to take Kalu's mother out of the country through Nigeria's border with Cameroun.
He therefore asked the international police organisation (INTERPOL) and diplomatic missions to assist the EFCC in the arrest of Mrs. Kalu outside the shores of Nigeria.
The EFCC statement titled: Wanted by EFCC: Mrs Eunice Kalu and 18 others" read: "On Monday, October 9, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) went to effect arrest warrants on some individuals in Abia State.
Among those the Commission has court orders to arrest is Mrs. Eunice Kalu, mother of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu.
Mrs. Kalu is wanted for questioning over allegations of conspiracy, stealing, money laundering, official corruption and diversion of public funds.
"However, as soon as EFCC operatives made their identities and mission known, persons said to be her security guards shot at the EFCC men who in the face of open hostility, had to withdraw from the scene, without exchanging fire with the hoodlums supposedly providing security for the suspect.
"The warrants of arrest have therefore not been effected on Mrs. Kalu and 18 others wanted for questioning on sundry allegations of financial impropriety.
"Intelligence information however indicates that plans are afoot to spirit Mrs. Kalu out of the country over the land border of Cameroon.
"INTERPOL and other law enforcement agencies around the world have been alerted. EFCC has also sent an alert to all diplomatic missions in Nigeria to treat the suspects as fugitives from justice if they set foot in their respective countries.
"Anyone who aids and abets the escape of suspects who have warrants for their arrest duly issued by a court of law will be in serious contravention of the laws of Nigeria and will be accordingly dealt with under the law.
"The Commission hereby warns the suspects to surrender themselves for questioning, immediately. No one is above the law", Nwajah said.
All this happening in a place where everyone is angel as we were told, how can that many people be on the run?

Nigeria: 2007 - When IMO Leaders Endorsed Araraume
This Day (Lagos)
November 2, 2006 Posted to the web November 3, 2006
Lagos
Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume recently made a formal declaration of his interest to govern Imo State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sufuyan Ojeifo, who witnessed the event, reports that Araraume's endorsement by influential political leaders across the State has set the tone for an epic battle of who succeeds Governor Achike Udenwa
For Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, last October 14 will certainly remain memorable. That was the day he formally declared his interest for the governorship of Imo State on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Araraume told the gathering, comprising political gladiators in the State, that converged on his Campaign Headquarters along Onitsha Road, Owerri that, "The journey to a better Imo begins today".
His speech at the event was excitedly delivered. And this could be understood against the backdrop of the wide support that he apparently enjoys both in Imo and Abuja. A strong supporter of the President Olusegun Obasanjo Presidency and conidered as loyal by the PDP hierarchy, analysts contend that political calculations in Abuja could tilt in favour of Araraume's emergence as the party's governorship candidate in Imo.
Araraume is believed to have long secured the Abuja end thus necessitating the open endorsement of his candidature at the Owerri declaration by the duo of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Senator Arthur Nzeribe representing a collateral advantage to him over and above other contenders to the governorship seat.
Both Iwuanyanwu and Nzeribe, who was chairman of the well-attended occasion, endorsed Araraume's candidature. Nzeribe took the podium first. In his characteristic short speeches, Nzeribe, the undisputable leader of Orlu Senatorial zone of the State, told the gathering: "You have not come out to see me, but to see the anointed person for the governorship position of Imo State in 2007 The event of today is one of celebration, to celebrate our anointed governor come 2007". He continued: "Igbo people here know me as one who talks and what I say will happen".
Iwuanyanwu, who controls Owerri Senatorial Zone, spoke in support of Nzeribe on the issue of endorsement of Araraume, who on his part, controls the Okigwe Senatorial zone. According to Iwuayanwu: "Araraume is a loyal and faithful son. He has been endorsed for the governorship position and no human being can stop him". He said further, "Araraume is the one we want to be governor. He is my political son. He is a real distinguished son, a distinguished senator from Okigwe; he is a tested politician with vast experience in party politics".
The import of Nzeribe and Iwuayanwu's endorsement is that once their support in Orlu and Owerri zones is pooled with Araraume's own support base in Okigwe zone, his candidature has therefore cut across the State in terms of acceptability. Analysts contend that this endorsement appears rare in the annals of politicking for governorship in the state.
In fact, Araraume's colleagues in the Senate, namely, Senate President, Senator Kenechukwu Nnamani, who was represented by Senator Victor Kassim Oyofo, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Julius Ucha, Senator Mohammed Abba Aji, Senator Teslim Folarin, Senator Eze Darlington Ajoku and Senator Abu Ibrahim witnessed his open endorsement by Nzeribe and Iwuanyanwu. There were also many other Nigerians, including Mr. Gbenga Obasanjo, first son of the President, that witnessed the event.
Araraume said he had applied himself to the reality that he would need the support of all sections of the State to build a new Imo. According to him, "I believe that politics should not be a dirty game, played by devious people who lie and deceive the people. I subscribe completely to the Utilitarian Philosopher's view that the business of politics and government in human society is the pursuit of the welfare and happiness of the greatest number of people.

"To this end, the duty of our generation is to contribute to the evolution of a better society in Imo State in particular and Nigeria in general through sacrifice and committed responsive leadership. My brothers and sisters, I have ruminated, prayed and consulted widely in our State. I have also consulted Imo citizens outside Imo State and other Nigerians from various parts of the country and I have come to the conclusion that I must respond positively to genuine appeals from well-meaning Imo sons and daughters that I be involved in the 2007 governorship contest in Imo State.
He spoke further: "In obedience to their wish and promptings that I keep date with destiny for the good of our people and the glory of God, I hereby declare formally today and in your presence that I will make myself available for service to the people of Imo State in the capacity of governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)".
According to him, his mission in governance was to build a new Imo State where "our people shall be able to afford the basic necessities of life without tears" adding however that, "I must appreciate the fact that positive transformation of this State is a collective task, which will require input from Imo citizens at all levels of society and from all parts of the globe. To this end, I call on you my brothers and sisters from Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu to join hands with me to rebuild the Imo State economy, education, healthcare system and inadequate infrastructure". e assured the people of the State that he would run an all-inclusive government, stressing that, "the days of politics of exclusion on the basis of senatorial districts are over. The journey to a better Imo begins today. As Max De Oree once said, 'the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality'. I have chosen to do this with deep commitment and selflessness".
Promising to build on the foundation laid by pioneers of good governance in the State, to wit: the late Sam Mbakwe, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kalu, Chief Evan Enwerem and the incumbent, Achike Udenwa, he listed the major challenges confronting Imo that his government would address to include, among others, the dearth of basic amenities such as roads, water and electricity; untapped human and natural resources; worrisome level of poverty and unemployment; weak institutional support for democratic norms and values; ineffective service delivery at the local government level; inadequate healthcare; and, inadequate facilities for improvement in the standard of education.
On what would be the agenda of his government? Hear him: "Our people have a constitutional right to good governance and our goal is to ensure good governance in Imo State with economic investments that will generate employment, encourage confidence in the domestic economy, guarantee the security of life and property and improve the standard of living".

West Africa Nigeria Urban Issues and Habitation
He also addressed the major policy thrusts of the envisioned government as he promised to "give priority attention to the provision of infrastructure in urban and rural areas and vigorously pursue reforms in agriculture, industry and commerce, as well as welfare and social reforms in education, health and the public service", adding, "we shall give institutional support to these reforms for sustainable good governance in respect of the judiciary, revenue audit, budget, anti-corruption and security reforms".
Araraume said he is not un-informed of the enormity of the tasks ahead, but that he was convinced that with "our collective support, commitment and resolve, these tasks and challenges are surmountable; we assure the present and future generations of Imo people that we are prepared to lift our State from economic doldrums to prosperity, security, peace and harmony".
The race has begun in earnest. Araraume has thrown his hat in the ring and what his actions and body languages have clearly said is, there is no going back, having laid his hands on the governorship plough. How will he fare in this enterprise with all strategic supports and endorsement, with or without the backing of the incumbent Udenwa? Time will tell.
I wish your insult was directed to this few idiots who have been holding Imo State citizens Hostage. I would have shared your view if you had concentrated on those bastards, instead insulting the whole Imo Citizens who are peace loving and hard working people.

But this boy here thinks he's doing his family or orji a favor by insulting the collective decency of the Igbo.

Mebiafra, let us put behing the fact that you are an already unmasked OBJ agent in this Forum, who is here to deceive us of your love for ndigbo and to play 419 on our intelligence by using the name Biafra. this Statements by you attracts my attention somehow. it reminds me of a Biblical saying that God will judge us as we Judge others.
the Notherners & Mebiafra of BNW[/B)
Meobiafra, you never miss a micro second here in BNW to put the whole Notherners in one Carton, labelling them all Backwarders, Corrupt, looters, bad people who destroy nigeria, animalistic, yeye people, wayo people , etc.
[B]Imo State people
Mebiafra if it is a justifiable Judgement all these years for you and your fellow cohorts to put the whole Notherners for instance in one single Big Carton and labell it Yeye and Backward people.then it is also for sure justifiable to apply the same on your "imo people"- who for sure have committed and continue to commit more potent attack and crime on igbo Phsychic, unity, diginity, integrity, in-born democratic Credentials, etc. the Records and History are there!- even the new ones are pouring daily!!
Sad the Igbo produced another shallow brain. First of, I'm not a northerner! Secondly, both their elites and megijas has been responsible for the killings of my folks! Thirdly, I see nowhere any Igbo invaded Aba, or went on rampage for the sole reason of exterminating you. And if you can't copy this much then you are beyond help. Any difference between your orji kalu and araraume? Ok, forget that, let's make a deal. If you can show me where I’ve pitied a section of Igbo against another, I’ll stop writing. Deal?

I would have shared your view if you had concentrated on those bastards, instead insulting the whole Imo Citizens who are peace loving and hard working people....IG Nwafor .............................................
IG thanks for your View, you see brother. i understand and share your feelings too. you see IG, i have made a deep taught and reasearch into the Topic "IBO Unity" and the "Solution" .every true and Patriotic igbo person anywhere needs a Solution as fast as posible for a house that is not only divided against itself but also fight and antagonise itself can never..never.. stand! till the end of times.
Enemies in brothers Skin!
during the third term War for instance. Senators like Ben Obi, chukwumerije, etc and other Politicians of igbo extractions who defended the " igbos will" fearlessly and courageously, hardly talk or reveal their strategy in any igbo Senators meeting because of the present of imo state representatives. anything you said, they will channel it intoto to the enemy. infact it was less risky to reveal your strategy in a meeting of Hausas or good yorubas than to do that among the igbos as a result of present of imo indigens. As it was in the Senate, so was it in other arms of government down to even traditional monarch meetings. all of them were bought over intrestinly with peanuts, some are doing what they are doing out of greedy, wicked and evil intents.- the fear of attending any Pan igbo meeting has now become the beginning of wisdom for every igbo Patriots because of the Menance of Enemies in Brothers skin!.
No end in sight!
this strange behaviour of igbos from Community that make up the present imo state have been going constantly for more that 3 decades now. each time we are prevail upon to continue to endure, be Patience and hope that reasons shall prevail or miracle will happen on their brains.nothing of such is or seems to be happening or even in the next 1000 years!.for me the Patience have run thin and the tension is running high, there are limit to everything including Endurance. and as a result there must be a Solution. So Bro IG nwafor, feel free to say what you think is the Solution.
They are not Hostages!
IG,please note that such solution does not include the 419 hypothesis that all Imo indigens are Hostages and all their leaders- both elected and non elected, including their Ndi-Ezes- all Hostagetakers!!.were have you seen any Imo Citizen behaving like Hostage. If you say you are a Hostage- a free one for that matter, why no single effort to free yourself from your Captors??. take for instance in this small online BNW community somebody like Mebiafra an Imonites-presumed(Hostage) whose hostagetakers are in Imo state??!. each time he appears, either he is castigating Ngige of anambra State, calling him Massob Killers, criminal, devil, corrupt etc, or he is in Enugu state lampooning their respected leaders, most often he and his cohorts are always in Abia state, yabing orji kalu or chukwumerije, their newly found Victim is now Ikemba nnewi, whom they yab with great passion ..yet those that are holding them hostage-hostagetakers are in imo state!, so IG what manner of Hostage that will first of all not try to free himeself before any other thing!???
I'm happy to have successfully logged into this wonderful space after nearly a year of trying to do so. Thanks to the support team that made this possible by supplying me with working authentication details.
Marcus Weber, biko don't let your frustration with a few Imo indigenes cloud your view of Imonites in general. We have sabos in every Igbo state.
Also don't let differences of opinions destroy your perceptions of certain individuals. I have to say that I am also disappointed with the individuals that are attacking Dim Ojukwu unnecessarily. But try and see things from their perspective. They have obviously been deceived by OBJ's elaborate scheme to get fellow Igbos to ditch Ojukwu and make him an object of caricature. I, for one, will remain steadfast in this race, and please don't label these group of Igbos as sabos. Believe you me, OBJ is pulling a lot of strings from behind the scene and some have obviously fallen prey to his devilish machinations, but I'm certain these group of Igbos (some of whom you mentioned in your initial message) will see the light, further on in this Igbo-survival journey.

bro Nwaumu-nri, you are wellcome to this Forum. i hope you will have a nice stay here. on what you said about about labelling igbos from present community that make up imo state sabos- thats is not the issue. the Issue is that we have a problem. we can not allow it to continue like this else we will move nowhere in the next 10000 years!, hence we need a solution. you see two people can not be together unless they agree, thats why i want IG nwafor to offer his solution so that we can weight it together with other options. t suggest that we will continue to live like that as if nothing is wrong, thats for me a great madness. So IG offer your options.

Obasanjo Meddling in Imo Governorship Race Written by Jonathan Elendu Wednesday, 29 November 2006 Wants Festus Odimegwu as next Governor...
President Olusegun Obasanjo is actively involved in the process of choosing the next Governor of Imo State. The President, at a meeting recently, directed Gov. Achike Udenwa, Ohaneze chieftain Joe Irukwu, and two others to ensure that Festus Odimegwu becomes the next Governor of Imo State.
At the said meeting between the President, Irukwu, Udenwa and two others, Gov. Udenwa informed Obasanjo that it would be an uphill task considering that Odimegwu hails from Orlu, the same Senatorial zone as he, Udenwa. The President had earlier directed the leadership of Imo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to submit a list of three Governorship candidates to him.
Festus Odimegwu was until recently a staff of Nigerian Breweries Plc. He was in the forefront of the tenure elongation project of the President. Because of his brazen and open association with the botched ambition of Pres. Olusegun Obasanjo, Odimegwu was removed as the managing director and chief officer
