Folks:

I am interested in learning how the web opeartions of African owned websites are financed. Are there any trends that are typical? What is the general source of funding for these websites, and what are the patterns of ownership?

The rule is "monetize or die." In simple terms, if you operate a large website, you must run advertisments on your website, or it will become too expensive to operate. Advertising is the source of funding for the most successful African websites. This advertising comes in the form of ads sponsored by other Africans or Africa-oriented business, or they come in the form of pay-per-click or pay per impression ads provided by Internet Ad brokers. Large websites such as BNW seem to prefer the latter ad platform, although I have seen one or two individually sponsored ads on the front page of BNW in the past.
