Intellectual Culture: Elitism at BNW undermines Naija Hoi Polloi
What happened to the good old days when BNW catered to the interests of the masses, when the hoi polloi could be heard loud and clear, and the rule of Vox populi, vox dei was in effect? Although there has never been a scarcity of erudite minds at BNW, it could certainly be said that the early months of this site was a time the heartbeat of Naija could be measured by trends on this board. Those days are no more.
Today, BNW seems to be dominated by an elitist intellectual cabal determined to steer every debate to a pre-determined trajectory and outcome. That, to the detriment of the marketplace of ideas principle that was a cornerstone of BNW. In the sixth year of this African Internet powerhouse, it is time to widen the tent once more and invite the masses to the dialogue. The tone at this site has of late been one of exclusivity and uppidiness, divorcing this site from the rectitude that comes with inclusiveness.

What is your point? It is the responsibility of the elite in any society to distinguish itself from the so-called hoi polloi and the wretched ethic that is associated with the hoi polloi. Besides, the so-called "elitist intellectual cabal" of which you speak is only a figment of your imagination. This seems to be just another rabble rousing thread.

Tunde, you're even more confusing in your choice of words than Jesse Jackson or a militant American moslem convict in the eighties, rabblerousers with no concept of what the hell they talk about.Simplify you're thoughts and make 2 and 2 equal to 4 for the average reader.

You have played straight into the hands of the critics of the archetypal Bold New World (pun intended) leaders, leaders who are said to be separated physically or psychologically from the masses. Yet, you spend oodles of time wondering why it is so easy for your opponents to discredit you and the rest of the BNW elites who have entered an intellectual Black-hole from where they could not provide leadership to the people they claim to lead.
If, as you put it, the elitist intellectual cabal at BNW is only a figment of my imagination, is it also a figment of my imagination that from Onitsha to Okigwi, issues of your Biafra struggle and the suffering of your people have taken a backseat to more urbane discussions concerning Nigeria?
