National Assembly Ratifies State of Emergency
Written by Jonathan Elendu
Thursday, 26 October 2006

The state of emergency declared in Ekiti State by Pres. Olusegun Obasanjo has just been ratified by the National Assembly. The President declared a state of emergency on October 19, 2006, amidst fears of break down of law and order in Ekiti State following the impeachment of Ayo Fayose and Bunmi Olujimi, Governor and Deputy Governor respectively.

The House of Representatives had earlier today declared its support for the state of emergency while the Senate as at that time was yet to form a quorum. National Assembly sources informed Elendureports.com that the serious lobbying was going on between supporters of the President’s position and those opposed to it.

Later, the Senate went into an executive session which meant that the media and other visitors were barred from witnessing the session. A source who spoke to us a few hours ago had speculated that if the Senate did not go the way of the House of Representatives, there would be a state of anarchy in Ekiti as there will be struggle for power in the state between those seen as ‘fronts’ for the President and Ayo Fayose.

Sources at the presidency also disclosed that there was panic at the Presidency as they were unsure of what the Nnamani led Senate which has asserted its independence would do. According to the source, “Baba is really worried. He does not understand this Nnamani man and nobody seems to be able to influence him.”
