Ex-Anambra gov, C. C. Onoh dies at 82 From CHIDI NNADI and PETRUS OBI, Enugu Wednesday, May 6, 2009
Former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Christian Chukwuma, Onoh is dead. He passed away on Tuesday in Enugu after a recurring battle with ill-health associated with old age.
Chief Onoh, 82, was last weekend admitted into the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Utuku Ozalla, Enugu, but later said to have been discharged from the hospital still critically ill.
Three weeks ago, it was also rumoured that he was dead, but sources close to his family told Daily Sun that he only collapsed then and temporarily passed out. When Daily Sun called at the Ngwo country home of the late octogenarian, the gate to his compound was under lock, while some group of people where inside talking.
The vicinity was also calm Daily Sun reliably gathered that Onoh’s first son, Gabriel was expected home on Wednesday to announce his death according to Igbo tradition. When contacted, an official of the Enugu State government said they were yet to receive an official message from the Onoh family, saying that the government and people of Enugu State would wish that he still remained alive.
The source said Onoh had been a formidable pillar from which the government drew its strength. Tributes have, in the meantime, started pouring from across the country over the elder statesman’s death.
The President, Igbo Youth Movement, Comrade Elliot Uko, said Onoh was a strong and fearless man. “With him you know where he stood, no man intimidated him. He criss-crossed the political firmament like a colossus, first republic parliamentarian. Ndi Igbo and Nigeria have lost a great man. We mourn him.”
