THE ORGANISATION The Association of African Universities (AAU), with headquarters in Accra, Ghana is an international non-governmental organisation set up by the universities of Africa to promote cooperation among themselves and between them and the international academic community.
The Association currently has vacancies for a (i) Director of Research and Programmes, and (ii) Head of Communications and Services. The Executive Board of the Association wishes to appoint leaders to build on foundations set in the past. The successful candidates will be expected to function as part of the Senior Management Team.
1. Director of Research and Programmes
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES The holder of the post will be required, as a primary duty, to serve as the senior programme officer responsible for overseeing research and studies, as well as programme development, management and fundraising within the Secretariat. Reporting to the Secretary-General, the Director of Research and Programmes
will be responsible for: - Initiating, developing and, where appropriate, managing new projects and programmes; - Lending support to the research and publications activities of the Association; and - Liasing with funding organisations under the direction of the Secretary-General.
In meeting these requirements the Director of Research and Programmes is also responsible for: - Coordinating the monitoring and evaluation of Programmes, and - Ensuring timely reporting of the various Programmes run by the Association.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE The candidate must: - Have a sound university education and post-doctoral experience in a research and/or training environment; - Have a distinguished record of publication in peer-reviewed journals; good knowledge of the African higher education environment and its critical challenges; and demonstrable experience in programme development and implementation; - Be experienced in fundraising and the management of resources raised.
COMPENSATION The salary level, which will be in the grade of Director (P5) in the African Union salary scale, will depend on the successful applicant's experience and qualifications, and will be comparable to those for similar posts in other international institutions.
2. Head of Communication and Services
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the Secretary-General, the Head of Communication and Services will be responsible for: - The production and dissemination of the Association's print, electronic, Internet, and other Information products - The management of the Association's service activities, and - The marketing of the Association to its various publics
In meeting these requirements the Head of Communication and Services is also responsible for initiating, developing and facilitating collaborative activities by member institutions of the Association in the information and communications technology (ICT) field.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE The candidate must: - Have at least a Master's Degree or equivalent academic qualification in Information and Communications Science or a related field; - Have demonstrable experience and strength in production and dissemination of information products, and/or institutional marketing, and/or management of income-generating services.
COMPENSATION The salary level for the Head of Communications and Services, which will be > in the grade of Senior Programme Officer (P4) in the African Union salary scale, will depend on the successful applicant's experience and qualifications, and will be comparable to those for similar posts in other international institutions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS In addition to the above, candidates for both positions are expected to possess:
LEADERSHIP SKILLS Motivator - A leader who will bring to the position status and credibility that are recognized by member institutions. Organisational Strategy - Have the ability to think strategically and laterally and maintain a broad perspective. Results Driven - Work effectively under pressure and manage work and resources within tight deadlines.
IMPLEMENTATION SKILLS Communication Skills - Be able to interact effectively at senior levels with Heads of Member Institutions, Development Partners, other international organisations and non-government contacts. Possess excellent communication skills including the ability to write lucidly and succinctly. Team and Relationship Building - Have the ability to work with and command respect of an international staff.
TECHNICAL SKILLS Knowledge of Technology - Have high levels of comfort and openness towards technology and its potential applications in a knowledge-based setting. Familiarity with the use of office technology, including electronic mail and the Internet is essential.
Language - The candidate should be fluent in one of the official languages of the Association (French, English, Arabic) and have a working knowledge of at least one of the others.
Working Pattern - The candidate must be prepared to adapt his/her schedule to the needs of its stakeholders. The position will require considerable travel and flexibility in working patterns to meet these needs.
TERM Contracts for both positions will be for an initial period of three (3) years, renewable once, subject to a probationary period of 12 months. Renewal of the contract is subject to satisfactory service.
