I write this thread to assist persons who are not familiar with the peoples of Biafra, obviously to any insider all the statements herein contained are the obvious:Primary religion of the Biafran peoples:
The primary religion of the Biafran peoples is christianity. It can be estimated that upto or perhaps exceeding 90% of the population is Christian. Another ? 10% are presumably animists.
The two main christian denominations are The Anglican church and the Roman catholic church. To a lesser extent there are methodists, Jehovahs witnesses. Unlike the western part of the country there is not a strong pentecostal church or evangelical church ( i.e. Aladura, and Cherubim and Seraphim etc.)
No good statistics are available, however it is estimated that the Roman catholics constitute about 75% of the population, or possibly even greater.
The Biafrans are a strongly religious people, and this may be related to the history of Igbo religion ( I refer you to sister Amandas write up).
Father Tansi: Beatified by His Holiness Pope John Paul the second. Our own saint to be.
(By no means is this a complete write up about Father Tansi, for those who are interested I would refer you to the Cistercian monks web site in London which gives a detailed write up.)
Father Tansi was born to animist parents in the anambra state region. At an early age while attending school at a catholic mission school he determined to convert to christianity, and he vividly described crying and violently throwing away his "Chi" which people used to carry around as a wooden statue. From then he lead a heroic life becoming one of the first indigenous priests who worked night and day to convert souls and comfort the sick and the dying. He later on joined the cistercian monks in London where he lead an exemplary contemplative life. He died suddenly in England and was never able to return to his beloved homeland.
(In the deposition for his beatification Doctors from the University of Nigeria teaching hospital testified about the complete disappearance of a large incurable cancer from the abdomen of a young girl.)
Cardinal Arinze: Archbishop of Onitsha.
Possibly our own Pope to be.
Out of all the possible successors to the papacy after John Paul the second, Cardinal Arinze is named as one of the main contenders.
Enugu: The worlds largest roman catholic seminary:
In the beautiful rolling hills of Enugu, there is the worlds largest seminary, with i believe close to 2,000 seminarians. This is a fact that not many are aware of.
While the rest of the Christian world is suffering from a paucity of vocations, we have to turn our young men away because of lack of facilities. In fact, we are poised to take the message of the gospel to the west, to convert those who first converted us, in effect God has saved the best for last... It is our people who will end up being the custodians of the faith.
Unfortunately, due to inherent discrimination in the west, our priests are not often welcome in their parishes even though there is an acute shortage of priests.
The Christian martyrs:
our people have been martyred for their faith like the christian martyrs in Rome, yet christianity became the predominant religion there. Likewise, our people have been martyred, only God knows the number, in the thousands. To this day, peoples of Biafra are being martyred in northern Nigeria in the thousands. It is on the blood of these martyrs that our church is built; it is through the blood of these martyrs that our church is so full of grace. It is through the blood of these martyrs, that we the peoples of Biafra have declared that Islam will not be a part of our country, nor will we live in a muslim state.
In no way do we deny our Muslim brothers their right to fuse church and state as is proscribed by Islam, however, we refuse to be a part of such a state. If need be, we are ready to be martyred as well, to demonstrate that for us the VICTORY is CHRIST, for us, it is Christ the King of Heaven and Earth, the only begotten Son of God, True God and True Man, that He and He alone has saved the world, and that He will DELIVER US FROM OUR ENEMIES, from The hands of those who hate us ( for no cause).
I hope that with this little piece I have been able to shed some light on the true situation of the Biafrans in Nigeria. Yes, it is a religious war, that is being waged by islamic fundamentalists. But, we are not afraid, and in the end the victory will be ours.
Light Of Christ! Lumine Christe.
