Ashantis contdMarriage Rite:
Before a proposal of marriage, and the consequent seeking of the consent of the parents...and the exchange of gifts, it is the business of the young people to satisfy themselves that the union would not violate any of the forbidden degrees of consanguinity. The ancient Hebrews themselves coud not have been more particular in this regard. They have obained the parents' consents, the Ashantis youth will make them smallgifts and pay the bride price including the wine offering. The parents consent, the presentation and acceptance of these gift, and the aseda (bride-price) are the only formalities that are necessary to constitute a valid amrriage. The wine is used in the religious part of the marriage rites...and also handed round to those who are present.
In ancient Hebrew marriage, the ceremony was performed in a private house, without the necessary presence of priest or rabbi. An elder invoke the bendiction and gave a cup of wine to the contracting parties who pledged to each other. After marriage customs are similar to the Ashanti.
Uncleanliness after birth, Purification, Menstrual seclusion:
For eight days after the birth of a child, the Ashanti "mother is considered as unclean."
It is only on the eight day, at the Ntetea rite, as the Ashanti call it, that the child receives its personal name. On the forthieth day, a further ceremony has to be observed. Same are the Hebrew customs.
Further, the restrictions and taboos of the Ashanti woman at the menstrual period, even to the retirement of the bara hut, read like a page from the book of Leviticus, and the system of Ashanti ablutions to prevent legal unclaenliness constantly reminds of similar practices common among the Hebrews.
Supreme Being of the Ashanti:
"I am convinced that the conception in Ashanti mind, of a Supreme Being, has nothing whatever to do with missionary influence, nor is it ascribed to contacts with Christians or Mohammedans. This Supreme Being, the conception of whom has been innate in the minds of the Ashanti, is the Jehovah of the Israelites."
Supreme Being - Onyame
In normal conversation, the prefix O is generally elided. The prefix N placed in front of the verb to form nouns lleaves as the significat part of the word Yame. In Ashanti, the letter M interchanges with W to represent the same sound. This establishes the similarity between Ashanti Yame and the Hebrew Yahweh.
Hebrew: HAYAH - to be (verb)
Ashanti: Yeh - to be
Hebrew: Bara - to create
Ashanti - Bore - Creator
The Ashanti tribal worship is strangely parallel to that of divided worship that existed in Jerusalem immediately prior to the Babylonian exile.
Alter of Nyame:
Among the stamps patterns of the ashanti cloths recently reproduced by Rattray, there is one striking design known as "Nyame dua" or Alter of Nyame." In the case of Mosaic Alter of Sacrifice, the horns at the corners are turned in instead of outward.
Breastplate:
A possible vestige of the Office of the Jewish High Priest was found among the Ashanti. Once more, the twelve divisions of the breastplate have something to do with the recorded tradition that the Ashanti and allied peoples were originally derived from twelve tribes or families...a possible affinity with the twelve tribes of Israel.
