Ja rules the roost at the Velodrome July 10, 2003
By Katharyn Williams and Monde Dlakavu
The Bellville Velodrome shook to the sound of hip-hop and R&B international superstar Ja Rule as he put on a dynamic performance for his Cape fans on the last leg of his South African tour last night.
Supporting acts started off with hip-hop legend Ready D(?) getting the fans in the right mood. He was followed by Loyiso, Afro Z and Mzekezeke, who continued to warm up the almost packed Velodrome with South African soul sounds.
And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for - Ja Rule appeared on stage and gave the crowd what they came for.
Hot hits such as Living It Up, Always On Time and Where I Would Be Without You drove the crowd wild.
The multiplatinum hip-hop artist was in the country for the first time and had previous shows in Johannesburg and Durban.
Ja Rule watched the Vodacom Challenge Final soccer match in Durban on Sunday, the first time he had attended a soccer match.
He said he hoped to return to South Africa after he completes his new CD, Blood In My Eye.
The after-party, held at a nightclub in Loop Street and not at Dockside as advertised, attracted many female fans, as well as local entertainers such as Mark Lottering, SA R&B king Loyiso, who also performed at the concert, and former e.tv sports presenter Eben Jansen.

Last saturday, composer, instrumentalist and arranger Benny Carter succumbed to bronchitis at age 95. The jazz great played alongside Dizzy Gillepsie, Miles Davis, drummer Kenny Clark, Ouincy Jones for nearly three decades in the be bop era.
Benny Carter will surely be missed. The last time I watched him perform was about six years ago in a duo with Leon "Ndugu" Chancelor in a summer jam picnic sponsored by American Cancer Society, in which there was a cancer control tent with information on early detection and nutrition to help in cancer prevention. A great man and a legend.

quote:(7/23/03, 8 p.m. ET) -- Few can challenge Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' business acumen as the successful entrepreneur has built an empire which includes a record label, a clothing line, a marketing company, several restaurants, and his own line of custom Lincoln Navigators. However, Combs may be in need of new challenge. According to Billboard.com, he'd like to purchase an interest in the New York Knicks.
As he recently said on The Howard Stern Show, "I think I could do a good job. I'm publicly puttin' it out there, because they're not taking my calls. I think they need some new blood up there... I'm not saying get rid of the owners, I'm saying put me down. Put me in the game... Because it's not going down right now."
After making the play-offs for 14 consecutive years, the Knicks have failed to make the play-offs for the past two seasons. Combs attributed the lack of success to hasty decisions, "We're making rush decisions. I think we need a team that also reflects the spirit of the city. We need an aggressive, fast team that knows how to run."
In related news, Combs' Bad Boy Records released the Bad Boys II soundtrack last week. The set is expected to debut at Number One this week on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Yep, the Bad Boys II soundtrack is a star studded entertaining collection. No question, Sean "P Daddy" Combs knows how to make hit recordings. He has added hit soundtracks to his resume. Jay-Z's thumping "La-La-La" and the Notorious B.I.G. and 50 Cent's energetic "Realest N%@$#!," the chart-topping album will take hip-hoppers all through the year before the Grammy Awards.
Chingy, the St. Louis rapper will be doing what he does best at the Beat Summer Jam Concert on Saturday, at the Universal Ampitheater delivering a number of his grade-A party jams on his solid debut album. Thematically, Chingy's fondness for women and partying dominates the collection.

The super trio Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill returns six years after its self-titled, double-platinum debut.
The music in LSG2 is definitely made for lovemaking. From Just Friends to the steamy finale of Can't Get Over You, 2 is dripping and even overflowing with sexuality.
Levert, one of O'Jays' Eddie Levert kids, Sweat, an all time soloist and loverboy, and Gill, former member of the sensatinal group New Edition effectively utilized their distinct voices in "LSG2." The album is heavily influenced by the powerful lyrics of Levert and Sweat.

Get Ready was written by Smokey Robinson in the 60s for BMI Music and released by various artist who assembled in Motor City (Motown) making hits upon hits with the cut that lasted two decades.
The Temptations, Undisputed Truth, and the all white rock band Rare Earth had it on in a tweedle dee tweedle dum fashion as Get Ready became a household name and national anthem to begin the era of the hippies in the 70s.

When next you stop by a record store, ask for Rare Earth's Get Ready. It's a masterpiece and I been spinning da track all day.

Yep, Rare Earth was something else after they released the Get Ready album in the fall of 1969. They had popped up at Motown recording studios as late as 2 a.m., when everybody thought there would be no session. But Pete (band leader and drummer) had always wanted to do something unique when the drums at backstage began to hum.
They all came along--Gilbert Bridges, Michael Urso, Ray Monnette, Eddie Guzman--and Get Ready did it. The all white rock band Rare Earth, sold overwhelmingly in every black household, then followed hits upon hits until the sensational Ma became another household name and national anthem in 1973.

Who wrote the song "MA?"

MA was written by 70s extraordinary arranger-composer-producer Norman Whitfield, for Motown Records. But the long play released in 1973 by Rare Earth, somehow, changed the way business was conducted in what owner Berry Gordy had envisioned to be an all black cast recording studio.
Whitfield directed most compositions and made hits upon hits for Temptations, Rose Royce and many recording artists who did gigs with the "MA" thing. MA is kind of similar to "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" recorded in 1972 by the Temptations. Just listen to the music, naaw, listen to both music and compare. There is a message in it.
"MA" prayed and went to church every Sunday while "Papa" was busy "chasing women and drinking." You see what I mean! Listen to the music because there is a message in the vibe.
