Bro Williamson, greetings!I'am happy for you, that you seriously desire to connect with the great Alkebulan. You have also taken positive strides to that effect. They are very few African Americans that have strong inclination to their ancestral continent.
Your choice of Ghana is a wise one, Ghana has many times in the past been home to some notable African Americans such as the philosopher scholar WEB Dubois.
I'll disagree with you that Nigerians are smarter than Ghanaians. Ghana had more educated citizens quite earlier than Nigeria, had her independence from Britain earlier than Nigeria, as a matter of fact, Ghana helped train many Nigerian civil servants in the early sixties.
Nigerians are just loudmouths, has an endemic ethnic problem, and deludes themselves as Africa's giant. Ghana on the other hand has been able to manage her ethnic differences far more skillfully than the moribund Nigeria.
You asked the question how can we work together to move Africa forward? Africa at this point-in-time in its continum is going through the same problems that Europe went through in the medieval times...wars, dictatorships, massive corruption, naked aggression, ethnic cleansing, and all sorts of barberity. No one knows exactly how long it'll last, but indicators seem to point that the despotic form of governance is waning. Hopefully, it'll usher in a period of introverted enlightenment, followed by an African cultural renaissance.
Africans therefore must first shake off the Arabic and European influences that has caused most of its problems since modern times. As the second largest continent, Africa has more nations in it than other continents of the world. Most of these nations has remained intact, because of the absence of ravaging wars of plunder as was the case in Europe. Internecine wars in Africa between neighbouring nations were in most cases low-intensity compared with what went on in Europe until the modern times. As such these nations retained their customs, languages, and culture until the arrival of the colonialists.
So what are my suggestions to Brother Williamson! (1) Pick one of the Ghanain cultures, be it ashanti, or other, observe and learn the mores, it'll not be easy, but try to forget about your westernized looking-glass view of seeing things; to truely connect you have to go back in time. (2) Spend five years consecutively in Ghana so as to fully aculturate. (3) Learn to speak the language
You can then drop the American in African American, and call yourself an African from Ghana.
