A cautionary tale but one which comes as no surprise to students of Western imperialism. Its all more saddening when one observes how the West succesfully deploys its monopoly of the means of global communication to obscure its role in creating the structural violence which is central to the system of global apartheid which George Bush Snr. described in 1990 as the 'New World Order'. A classic example is the East Timor scenario which you have just drawn our attention to. How many of those Western media institutions which denounced human rights abuses by the Indonesian military in East Timor, reported on the role of the US in encouraging the 1974 invasion or in providing arms and finance to prop up the Indonesian military regimes until 1998? Why is the International Military Tribunal for Rwanda trying only the Hutu leaders who organized and directed the 1994 genocide without examining the role of Belgium and France in supplying the weapons and diplomatic support which emboldened the Hutu regime to embark on the 'final solution'?
Why is Mugabe nowadays excoriated as a murderous, corrupt thug [which I think he is quite alright] by the Western media for killing 4 white farmers but praised as an African statesman by that same Western media while his army murdered 8,000 black Zimbabweans between 1982-85 and his political cronies stole the aid money meant to pay for land reform?

There will always be more questions than answers but the point is - the West is the contemporary devil that we must dine with but only with the longest of spoons.Ndi'Igbo will have to deal with the West but only with our eyes wide open.

Amanda

I am still away on holiday. However, I am trying to chip in a post or two daily.

What your post shows and buttressed by Sundiatta's, the treacherous road of global politics and economics.

That's what we must learn not to forget. Justice and fairness are never the currencies of global politics or economics.
