CALABAR, Nigeria, April 25 (Reuters) - At least 50 people have been killed in 10 days of fighting between rival ethnic groups over farmland in southeastern Nigeria, regional authorities said on Monday.

Police have yet to issue an official death toll from a series of clashes in villages on the border between Cross River and Ebonyi states, but a spokesman for one of the communities said at least 50 people were probably dead.

"More than 50 people from Izzi community in Ebonyi are still missing and it is likely that these people are dead," said Pascal Nwite, a spokesman for the Izzi people of Ebonyi state.

Stephen Odong, a traditional ruler from Ukelle, on the Cross River side of the conflict, said three villages in his domain had been destroyed and survivors had fled.

"Many deaths have been recorded on our side," he said.
