The Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, William Rehnquist, has died at the age of 80 after a battle with thyroid cancer.

Now with John Roberts nominated to fill Rehnquist’s seat as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, assuming that he receives a speedy confirmation, and also assuming that the associate justice seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor remains unfilled by October 3, will O’Connor have to continue on her seat? And while at it, what is your opinion about this process of a Supreme Court rookie lording it over his by longevity, superiors? Compared with the system used in Nigeria, which in your learned opinion would you prefer? In anticipation of your response, thanks.

I am still taking in and reading as much as possible of the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on John Roberts. I will have more to say when the hearing concludes and Roberts is confirmed as I expect he will be.
