Three Northerners were confirmed dead and eight others, including a woman, seriously injured after attacks by hoodlums believed to be loyalists of the Uwazuruike-led Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who blocked the Aba section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in the early hours of yesterday. Daily Trust correspondent who visited the scenes, including areas littered with smashed tankers and the yam and onion market along the expressway, as well as the Aba Teaching Hospital where the bodies of the three killed persons were deposited and the injured received skeletal treatment, reports that the situation has been brought under control by the police. Inquiries by our correspondent revealed that the assailants started their attacks on Saturday night when they broke into the yam and onion markets and began looting the properties of the Northern traders, threatening hell for those
who did not immediately escape or who attempted to defend themselves and their property. Confirming the incident at the Aba central police station where over one thousand defenseless Northerners had taken refuge, the Assistant Commissioner of
Police and Area Commander of Aba, ACP Sale Tanko, described the attackers as hoodlums who had capitalised on rumours that the Igbos were hit in the North.
Tanko described the incident as unfortunate, but added that the situation has been subdued and that security has been beefed up at the markets. Measures ware being taken to guard the worship and living places of the Northern community in the city, he added. According to him over ten persons have been arrested in connection with the attacks along the expressway, which, he said, did not extend to the living areas of the people inside the city. He discarded rumours that the Igbos were hit in the North and could not confirm any connection between the assaults and the arrest and trial of the MASSOB leaders in Abuja. "You have gone round with us and seen with your own eyes the extent of the incident. Just this morning we received a distress call that hoodlums were operating along the expressway. I immediately ordered our armoured personnel carriers (APC) to the scene, where over ten culprits were arrested. The situation has been subdued." "Really, there was no prior information about the attacks. But there were rumours of attacks on Igbos in the North which was neither heard on the radio nor television. While we do not work on rumours, we acted very fast. The arrested attackers are already undergoing interrogation and we are going further
to fish out all the perpetrators of the dastardly acts," the Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Tanko maintained. He said seven tankers were smashed, other were properties destroyed, and markets were looted, adding that security men have been drafted to guard the areas with a Northern population. Urging the people to be calm as the police has taken over, he disclosed that he will dialogue with the leaders of the community to find lasting measures for the security of the people. Meanwhile the deputy chairman of the Aba Muslim community, Alhaji Musa Iheakaram, has called on members of the community to stick to the teachings of Islam and the tradition of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), both of which inculcate peace, unity and tolerance, and to remember at all times that whatever happens to a Muslim is preordained by Allah. Confirming that the Aba Central Mosque has been surrounded by the police, he commended the Abia State Commissioner of Police for promptly visiting the victims at the hospital and ordering their immediate treatment, and the Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for their prompt response to the distress call. He advised the host community to desist from actions that are capable of disuniting the country and foiling the hard-earned democracy the nation has adopted in the last six years. The Chief Imam of the Aba Central Mosque, Alhaji Bashir Idris, blamed the heavy loss on the "communication gap" among the community members, as well as the late response of the police to distress calls. According to him the police was informed of the attacks at about 10 o'clock on Saturday night but nothing was done until the morning of Sunday when some properties were already ablaze.
