The death of Safinatu, first wife of the 2003 Presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Muhammadu Buhari, sent shock waves and elicited disbelief in Kaduna on Sunday.
It came barely 24 hours after the murder of Sa’adatu, wife of another prominent politician, Abubakar Rimi, former Kano State Governor and former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Safinatu died at the family's residence on Inuwa Wada Road, Ungwar Rimi GRA, Kaduna after a brief illness and has been buried according to Islamic rites.
Thousands of Buhari's supporters and sympathisers trooped in to condole with the family and were received by him.
Among them was Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi.
State ANPP Chairman, Kabir Umar, stated that "one will sympathise with such a great loss at this time when her input is needed. Her death is a serious blow to not only the family, but the generality of Nigerians and Buhari’s supporters.
"Definitely, it is at a time Buhari needs her support, but God knows best and may her soul rest in perfect peace”.
Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) Chairman, Balarabe Musa, said: “I am presently not in Kaduna, but I have received the news with rude shock and disbelief'.
“At any rate, I have to get details on it before I can react properly. For now, all I will say is to pray that may her soul rest in perfect peace.
Scores of Nigerians have continued to express outrage on the murder of Rimi’s wife, Sa’adatu, saying it is a bad way to begin the New Year.
The PDP said it is saddened by it and tasked security operatives to bring the murderers to book.
Its National Publicity Secretary, John Odey, urged Inspector General of Police (IG), Sunday Ehindero, to investigate all clues.
Former PDP National Chairman, Audu Ogbeh, expressed concern and implored the authorities to prosecute the killers in order to douse tension in the land.
Senator J.K.N Waku said the assassination raises a lot of questions on the security of citizens.
To him, a government that cannot guarantee the security and welfare of citizens is not worthy of existence.
House of Representatives Pension Committee Chairman, Sani Sha’aban, challenged the security agencies to unravel the circumstances of Sa’adatu’s death.
In his view, the murder portends grave danger in 2006.
He condoled with Rimi, the government and people of Kano State, saying Allah knows the best.
Sha’aban urged the bereaved to take solace in the fact that no evil done by man against man can go unpunished.
