We have too many sports and too many greats in their respective categories. From boxing to skateboarding, sporting events like acknowledged by most leaders, have been the institution that makes body and soul, one, and in particular a reckoning force to national unity. It is a game of wit. So from the following list of various sporting events, list the best, in your own opinion with explanation why they should be on your number one list.

1. Soccer (Football)
2. Tennis
3. Basketball
4. Boxing
5. Football (American football)
6. Wrestling
7. Skateboarding
8. Skiing
9. Track and Fields (High jump, Sprinter, etc.)
10.Baseball
11.Golf
12.Moonlight Play
13.Bowling
14.Horse racing
15.Draft

This is no survey, but an attempt to know the sports freaks and what discipline they believe in or attached to when it comes to these sports events.

Football (soccer 4u Yanks).

I nominate Diego Amando Maradona. He was a one man riot squad. He could single-handedly determine important games. In terms of skills, he was unique; his six pence turn, daring sprint, and teasing crosses have become the standard other players try to aim for. In my own opinion, none has it all together since Diego hung up his boots.

Above all Diego was politically aware to the chagrin of the mafioso organising bodies. Diego knew when a game must be won by all means--something that is lacking in the Naija boys who came here after USA94 to lose to England. You can imagine how we felt that day.

Forget the drugs(they can't improve skills anyway), Diego was sheer class.

Definitely Soccer.

I think the Brazillian Renaldo is "the man".
He's so gifted that his style of footballing is a unique art.
I get charged up and at the same time, mesmerized watching him display his mind and foot co-ordinating manouvers of the ball.

The guy was so great that the Germans invited him for a "friendly play"...for a hefty sum, in order to video tape him close up, at play. The Germans later used the videos to study his moves for 'applied footballing techniques' for their players.
He has made football history.

Amanda and Ohafia:
Maybe, you guys are not really football freaks to have forgotten the greatest that played the said sport was Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento). Nobody even came close like the names forementioned.

Facts: The youngest ever to play in a world cup at age 17; a record.

He scored over a thousand goals; a record.

He featured in four world cups; a record.

He won three world cups; a record.

He is soccer's legend.

Kofi Quansah my brother,

I'm not knocking on Pele's achievements. I know he banged in a lot of goals in his time. But if you read my thread, you'll notice that I said Maradona was politically aware and he used soccer as a tool to score a lot of political points in a way Pele never did. That is also the reason Ali is the greatest in boxing.

Who knew Napoli until Diego went there and they lifted the Italian championship? Diego left and Napoli drifted back into obscurity. He used soccer to lift that entire place and the people's morale. Did he not single-handedly win the world cup for Argentina in the company of the arguably the most talented cream of footballers from all over the world. Will England ever forget the extension of the Falkland wars in the field of soccer?

You talked about Pele starring at a world cup circa 17yrs. Yes, but it's more to do with chance than anything. I'm sure if there was senior world cup the year Diego lifted the junior championship trophy, he'd broken into the senior team. Even Amokachi was the same and lately Aghagowa, and I'm trying to remember the name of the Ghanian(I hope) player who is currently making waves at a youthfull age.

You also talked about Pele playing in 4 world cups: A terriffic achievement any day, but times have changed and I'm almost sure pele wouldn't have had that opportunity if he belonged to Diego's generation. Even at that Diego also appeared at 4 world cups, starting from Espana 82 when he made his debute to US94 when he needed pain killers to teach Nigeria how to play.

Pele was great, but Diego was greater. And That's my personal opinion.

Boxing: Ali is said to be the greatest but I think Jack Johnson set the whole pace before Muhammed Ali.
