Enyimba win league, cars
The Vanguard
(Monday, 9th July, 2001)
EXPECTEDLY, Enyimba FC of Aba yesterday lifted the Super League trophy coming out unblemished in the one week play-off to determine Nigeria’s flagbearer in the elusive but lucrative Champions League.

Enyimba’s victim last night was Rangers International of Enugu which lost 0-1 ending their glorious run on the league without anything to show for it.

Emeka Nwanna a.k.a. Ayaya scored the lone goal that buried Rangers and made the Aba team proud owners of 27 Peugeot cars promised them by Governor Orji Uzor Kalu.

Overwhelmed by the victory, Kalu asked the celebration to move over to Victoria Island where he would hand them over the car keys.

"This is victory for hardwork. As promised, cars are waiting for them. We’re not stopping at that. We’ll also ensure that they break the Champions League jinx and win the trophy for Nigeria."

He promised to personally get corporate sponsors for Enyimba and to show that hand shake is not the best form of encouraging players.

Enyimba wins Pepsi Super league

NPA picks CAF Cup ticket
By Ibe Ojo and Harry Awurumibe

APART from winning this year's Pepsi Super League, before its last game Enyimba F. C. of Aba yesterday defeated Rangers 1-0 at the National Stadium to become the first team to garner the maximum points since the competition started three years ago.

Enyimba were already champions of the Super Four before their game against Rangers courtesy of NPA 2-1 victory over Gombe. Gombe United needed a win over NPA to tie on six points with Enyimba.

But the team which played so well against Rangers on Thursday, failed to live up to expectation. NPA fought from behind to win 2-1. NPA also picked a CAF cup ticket.

Enyimba's victory in the Super League is very significant because it is the first time the club has won a national competition. Emeka Nwana who left Rangers for Enyimba mid-season played a big role in the team's epoch making perfomance. He scored two vital goals in the victories over NPA and Rangers.

The player who naturally elated with his outing might have played his last game for the club. There are speculations that he has signed a contract with a team in Ukraine.

Enyimba's coach, Godwin Uwua has also made history for himself. He is the first coach to win the Super League twice. He led Lobi Stars to victory in 1999.

For winning the champions league, Enyimba players may get new Peugeot 504 cars. Abia State Governor Orji Uzoh Kalu had promised each of the players and officials a car each if they win the league before the competition started.

Meanwhile, Pepsi, the sponsors of the competition yesterday gave a cheque of N3 million to Enyimba for winning the super four. NPA got N1.25 million while Gombe United received N250,000. Rangers got N150,000.
