Senator Ike Nwachukwu must apologize

Concerned citizens of Igbo land

"He traced the genesis of Igbo marginalisation and suffering to All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) presidential candidate Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu's prosecution of an unplanned war and escape abroad, having rejected the confederal option." This statement was credited to Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu, guardiannews February 19, 2003.

On February 19th 2003, the Nigeria Guardian Newspaper published a report attributed to the NDP Presidential candidate, senator Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu in which he was quoted to have said that Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwu Emeka-Odumegwu Ojukwu was responsible for Igbo marginalization and suffering as a result of “Chief Emeka Ojukwu’s prosecution of an unplanned war and escape abroad, having rejected the confederal option”

We, the undersigned, representing a coalition of organizations and citizens of Igbo land across the globe, find Ike Nwachukwu’s statements to be false, reprehensible and insensitive. We thus condemn his insensitivity and efforts to reopen the wounds of Biafrans and Igbo Victims of the Genocidal war against them from 1967-1970 by the statement above credited to him.
We urge that all well meaning people distance themselves from the man who has not shown remorse for (bearing) arms against his kinsmen.”" In Igboland this is ARU- the greatest abomination. It is remarkable that Ike Nwachukwu has chosen not to apologize to Ndiigbo. It is even more confounding that he now wishes to represent the same people against whom he trained his gun, and nearly destroyed. We find it unconscionable that the said senator Nwachukwu finds the temerity to distort Igbo history to justify his political ambition.

We request all Igbo and Eastern Nigerian organizations especially those directly affected by the genocidal war to distance themselves from Ike Nwachukwu until he comes to the realization of the extent of damage he had done to his people and take appropriate action for atonement of (his “Aru”) according to our cultural and customary laws, not the law of the jungle he was a part of in the said war.

We demand that Ike Nwachukwu also issue unequivocal apology to those who were terribly affected by the genocidal war, especially the survivors of the Asaba massacres, a sector in which he operated actively. The blood and spirit of all the children who perished by Kwashiorkor and direct Nigerian air raids are swirling restlessly in numerous mass graves in Igboland. They did not need to be reminded of the genocide and suffering by an unrepentant perpetrator.

Signed
Cornelius Akubueze
Oliver Obi

Representing the coalition committee
